WINTER 2016

The Nightingale-Bamford School presents Hobbyhorse, a series of afterschool workshops for children. Après Hobbyhorse, an additional hour from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, is available for an additional charge. Children who stay for Après Hobbyhorse have the opportunity to do homework, participate in quiet games, listen to a story, or work on a computer. The winter session will begin on January 4 and end on March 17. Monday workshops will meet for 9 sessions (additional hour $135), Tuesday and Friday workshops will meet for 10 sessions (additional hour $150), and Wednesday and Thursday workshops will meet for 11 sessions (additional hour $165). Enrollment is limited, and we urge you to register promptly. ADMISSIONS

Hobbyhorse is open to Nightingale-Bamford students in Classes K–IV and St. Bernard’s students in Classes K–III. Students may enroll on a prorated basis after the sessions have begun, space and other conditions permitting.

TUITION

Fees include all supplies and must be paid in full upon registration. No refunds will be granted after the first scheduled workshop. Please make all checks payable to the Nightingale-Bamford School. Financial aid is available. SATURDAY SPORTS CLUB

Saturday Sports Club will be available at St. Bernard’s for boys and girls in Classes K–VIII beginning December 5. Skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and team spirit will be emphasized. No advance registration is necessary; children who wish to participate should arrive in sneakers any Saturday at St. Bernard’s (4 East 98th Street) and enter through the black door closest to Fifth Avenue. Students staying for the full day must bring lunch. Creative Cooks Joel Hinds-Ortiz Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 Young chefs tempt your taste buds with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Students will practice mixing and measuring techniques while learning to use various kitchen tools. Every class includes new recipes, fun culinary ideas, and tasty treats. What a delicious way to end the school day!

Yoga/Pilates Plus    Joel’s Kids Action Sports Classes K–IV (minimum of 5) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 In this unique class, coaches will guide students through the best practices of yoga, Pilates, and dance. The workshop is designed for all levels and abilities, so get ready to stretch, strengthen, and feel the beat!

Fun with Photoshop Caroline Hastie Classes II–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 In this class we will use Photoshop image-editing software and scanning tools as we learn to enhance and manipulate digital photographs. We will also experiment with creating images without a camera. A digital camera is useful (be sure to bring the cable too), but not required. Those who have participated in this workshop previously will experiment with more advanced techniques.

The Mystery of Magic Joel Rappelfeld Classes K–IV (minimum of 5) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $550 Be part of the mystical and exciting world of magic. Every week our magic gurus will introduce the apprentice magicians to a few different tricks. They will be able to impress their friends and family with various card tricks, disappearing coins, sleight of hand, and more. We supply the materials and expertise, you bring your enthusiasm. wednesdayS

Ice Skating Laura Donaldson, Naomi Hayashi, Susie Heller, Marica Mayuzumi Classes K–IV (limited to 56) 3:15–5:15 p.m. Tuition: $630 ($250 extra for lessons) Come skate with us at Wollman Rink! Bus transportation to and from the rink is provided; students will be dismissed from Nightingale at 5:15 p.m. If you wish to include a half-hour figure skating or hockey lesson for your child, please add $250 to the regular fee. In case of inclement weather, the children will play games at Nightingale. Payment for any lessons canceled due to inclement weather will be refunded. (Please note that refunds will not be given for student absences; the refund policy only applies if we cannot go to Wollman Rink.) We are hoping for good weather!

January 6, 13, 20, 27 February 3, 10, 17, 24 March 2, 9, 16 Astonishing Art The Craft Studio Classes K–IV (minimum of 6) 3:15-5:00 p.m. Tuition: $615 This class will go beyond the typical coloring and pasting to give young artists the best experience out there. From clay to decoupage and more, we will break down and explore art techniques and materials to create our own unique projects. Construct neon wrap bracelets, design dioramas, make multimedia self-portraits, and so much more. This class is sure to ignite your expressive and innovative talents. 

Chess Shernaz Kennedy Classes K–IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $660 Come join this fun workshop— no previous knowledge of chess is necessary! From the beginning you will learn the moves, principles, strategies, and tactics of casual chess play and serious competition. This workshop extends beyond the activity to underscore the art of logical reasoning more broadly. Students emerging from this workshop will become good problem solvers and naturally develop a tough-minded confidence that will stay with them throughout their lives. Gaga Eileen Saguirer and Jeanne Finnigan-John Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Gaga is a fast-paced, action-packed dodgeball game from Israel. Players use their hands to bat the ball and bounce it off the walls as they try to hit other players below the knees. The object of the game is to be the last one standing. Gaga is lots of fun and a great way to burn off energy.

January 7, 14, 21, 28 February 4, 11, 18, 25 March 3, 10, 17 Adventures in Minecraft Bryan Rosen Classes I–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Miners unite! Students will work together to build and create in a virtual environment. Players will mine for materials, build structures, and form a new digital world. Students will explore, build, and create on our private educational MinecraftEdu server. Minecraft encourages creativity, teamwork, and problem solving.  Fencing Sheridan Fencing Academy Classes K–IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $660 Come join a high-energy environment that is sure to keep students motivated and excited while they improve their fitness and learn the sport of fencing. Students will run, jump, and play as they develop their coordination, balance, and strength. This class will offer an array of exercises and activities designed to suit the age and experience level of every student. Equipment will be provided and no prior experience is necessary. Homework Study Claire Anderson Classes III and IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 This is a time to complete your homework before going home. Ms. Anderson will be available to answer any questions you might have. What a great a way to begin the evening!

Theater Builders Alexis Lambright Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $660 Experience the process of creating your own unique show from scratch! Children will be guided through a series of improvisational games to develop a story. They will then write a script with lyrics set to music and rehearse their creation. friDAYS

January 8, 15, 22, 29 February 5, 12, 19, 26 March 4, 11 Polar Parties Jo-Anna Roach Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 2:20–4:00 p.m. Tuition: $550 Join us as we explore and create paintings of the North and South Poles. Icebergs will float, penguins will roam, and whales, seals, and ice fish will swim in the frigid seas of Antarctica. Capture igloos, owls, polar bears, and wolves under the glowing skies of the Northern Lights. Take Me to the Water Glenn Pepper Classes K–IV (minimum of 5) 2:20–4:00 p.m. Tuition: $600 Swimmers will be grouped according to their abilities. The instructor-to-student ratio is 1:3. The focus of the program is on instructional swimming, with time allotted for water activities. The children will be transported to the Monterey, located at 175 East 96th Street, and will be dismissed from there at 4:00 p.m.

STAFF Naomi Hayashi is the director of Hobbyhorse and has been a member of the Nightingale faculty for nine years. She is a graduate of New York University. Her interests include running, yoga, theater, travel, and spending time with her daughter. Claire Anderson is a Nightingale alumna and Class IV homeroom teacher. She is a graduate of Kenyon College and received her MS from Bank Street College of Education. She enjoys traveling as well as exploring all types of technology. Laura Donaldson is a Nightingale alumna and teaching fellow working in the library. She is a graduate of Hamilton College, where she received her BA in English and Studio Art. She loves to read, paint, and play soccer. Jeanne Finnigan-John holds a BS in dance/community health education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has taught at Nightingale for more than 20 years. She teaches dance to students K–XII and runs the varsity dance program. Caroline Hastie is the Middle and Upper School photography teacher at Nightingale and has been at the school for 14 years. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA from Hunter College. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, and her work has been shown throughout the Northeast and in Europe.

Shernaz Kennedy is one of America’s leading chess teachers. She instills in students the means to unlock the secret of the world’s greatest game. In 1987 she was ranked number two on the US Olympiad Team. She has started chess programs at Browning, Buckley, Trinity, Dwight, and All Souls Church. She even helped World Champion Bobby Fischer in his successful comeback match in 1992. Alexis Lambright is a New York City-based performer and comedy writer. She has studied improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, as well as the Magnet Theater. She can also be seen entertaining scores of children as a performer with the Story Pirates! Marica Mayuzumi received her BA and MA in teaching from Simmons College in Boston and works as a Kindergarten teacher at Nightingale. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors and working on craft projects. Glenn Pepper, a graduate of the New York Institute of Technology, has been involved with many swimming activities. He was the aquatic director of the Nassau County Parks Department and is currently the director of Swim Time, Inc. and Take Me to the Water. Kelly Qualman is a Class IV homeroom teacher at Nightingale. She is a graduate of Emerson College and Harvard University. In her free time she enjoys baking, writing, and riding her bike in Brooklyn.

Susie Heller has been a member of the Nightingale faculty for over 39 years. She is a graduate of Nightingale and received her BS from Skidmore College. Her interests include sports, needlepoint, photography, and travel.

Joel Rappelfeld operates Kids on Wheels and Kids Action Sports. His teachers have been enjoying working with children and teaching skating, sports, and a variety of creative classes for over two decades.

Joel Hinds-Ortiz is the head chef at Nightingale. Prior to joining our kitchen, he worked at St. David’s, Argentelle Catering, and Special Events and Entertaining Ideas Catering. He enjoys teaching all his recipes to the children.

Jo-Anna Roach has taught Chinese and Japanese brush painting and calligraphy to Classes I and III at Nightingale for the past 14 years. An Acadia University graduate, she has lived, studied, traveled, and taught throughout Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and India.

Bryan Rosen is the Lower School technology integrator at Nightingale. He holds a BS in elementary education from Catholic University and an MA in computing in education from Teachers College. He is passionate about purposeful technology integration to enhance learning in the classroom. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and drawing.  Eileen Saguirer is a physical education teacher at Nightingale. She received her BS in kinesiology from Penn State University and her MA from Adelphi University. Eileen enjoys participating in many sports, especially volleyball and karate. She has studied Seido Karate for over 25 years and holds a fifth degree black belt. Sheridan Fencing Academy is located in New York City and provides an alternative to standard sports education. The academy incorporates the latest in sports training practices to accelerate a student’s improvement and help them expand their potential. The exercises used in classes are designed to engage the student’s mind, as well as body, so that the training is fun and the student learns and improves quickly. The Craft Studio has been a staple in the lives of New York City children since founder Barbara Dansker opened its doors in 1994. It is a magical, friendly, warm, and inviting place where children of all ages can explore their artistic talents. The combination of a beautifully decorated spacious studio and a fun and creative staff is the perfect formula for imaginations to run wild.
