C O N TAC T U S , O R J U S T SAY H E L LO ! W E ’ D LOV E TO HEAR FROM YOU. 458 William Street Northbridge 6003 Western Australia (08) 9227 7770 Tuesday - Friday: 10:30am - 5:30pm Saturday & Sunday: 10:30am - 5:00pm Magali Dincher Creative Director +61 450 920 466 [email protected] (sales, commissions, wholesale) Alina Tang General Manager [email protected] (workshops, general enquiries, studio access)

Dear reader, It appears you have Beau Est Mien’s brand new winter printmaking guide in your hands! Before we share our new workshops program with you, we’d like to formally introduce ourselves. Beau Est Mien Prints & Design encompasses a shop downstairs, offering carefully selected gifts from local and international makers, as well as a printmaking studio upstairs where we run workshops and make our own original artworks. Beau Est Mien is run by a tight-knit, passionate team of creatives and we’ve been working super hard to make this season’s printmaking workshops better than ever. On the 1st of April 2015, we celebrated our one year anniversary in our Northbridge premises. This exciting milestone has given us a chance to reflect on our achievements and think about where we want to go next. As a result, we have put our heads together and curated this season’s new workshop program. We have decided to introduce two streams of adults workshops - those running for one-day and, those for three-days in order to cater for your different needs and printmaking experience. For people who enjoy being inspired by our themes and are seeking an introduction to the magical world of print, we have our one day workshops. This season we are pleased to announce that they are offered at a more affordable price! Our three-day workshops are aimed at those seeking a comprehensive understanding of certain print processes, and include a material starter-kit. As always, we have crafted a range of fun and experimental kids print workshops, which will run over the school holidays. So what makes our workshops unique? Our class sizes are kept small, ensuring our guidance and feedback is specific to your project’s needs, and we provide all the materials required for our classes. The workshops are run by technically trained printmakers and artists with their own rich and exciting art practices. On top of this, we have recently renovated our studio space to further ensure that you enjoy working in our bright and airy space. We hope you like our new program and that it inspires you to engage in the great world of print! Yours in print, Beau Est Mien team

PRINTMAKING TECHNIQU I N TAG L I O Collagraph The versatile process of collagraph traditionally involves the layering of textured materials including sand, paper, stickers and other small flat objects to create a printing plate. The Beau Est Mien method of collagraph utilises some of these traditional techniques paired with etching onto a varnished card surface. The result is a fine-lined and detailed print with a textured background. The collagraph plate is printed through the etching press.

Etching Etching is a traditional fine art method of printing in which a metal plate is varnished, the image is drawn onto the plate with a dry point tool and etched with an acid to ‘bite’ the plate. The plate will then be inked up and put through the etching press a number of times to create a limited edition of art prints. Etching is a suitable technique to achieve fine lines and high detail.

RELIEF Linocut The timeless practice of lino cutting uses a thin block of linoleum. Bold, striking images can be created around the desired areas. The linoleum plate is inked up using a roller and the print is transferred onto a piece of paper through the etching press. Lino is a versatile process and can also be printed by hand.

ES MONOPRINT Pigment Transfer Pigment transfer is a quick way to add another layer to your prints and create collages. For this process photographic imagery is transferred from one piece of paper to another, through the use of a non-toxic solvent in combination with a laser-printed image. The effect is a faded transfer of the image which gives a nostalgic effect. This process can be manipulated through the way the solvent is applied, whether to the whole image or only part.

SCREENPRINTING Stencil Screenprinting Screenprinting is an efficient way of quickly creating multiple prints using a silk screen, hand cut stencils, inks and a squeegee. The hand cut stencils are usually created from lithographic paper or acetate using scissors or a sharp knife. Stencil screenprinting can be printed on to paper or fabrics.

Photographic Screenprinting The equipment and set up needed for photographic screenprinting is very specific and uses a UV light exposure unit, light sensitive emulsion, silk screens and the usual squeegee and ink. The result is great for photographers looking to reproduce their images or for artists looking to transfer their design on to different materials such as wood, paper, fabric, tiles and plastic.

K I D S H O L I DAY WORKSHOPS Suitable for kids aged 5-14 years old We keep our class sizes small, so we take on a maximum of 10 participants. If we have a group of more than 6 kids, there will be two teachers to make sure that everyone gets the attention they deserve! We welcome one parent per child to sit in during the workshops, however if you’d like to participate as well you can join in for an extra $65 which includes all materials.

THE TEAM MAGALI DINCHER Teacher and Director Magali Dincher has been sharing her love of printmaking since 2010. After having mastered her favourite techniques of drypoint collagraph, etching, linocut and screenprinting, she decided to start giving workshops from her courtyard studio. This small practice quickly blossomed into what it is today: a fully equipped studio in the heart of Northbridge, in which she has the opportunity to teach her enthusiastic participants a range of printmaking techniques. She has tailored workshops for a variety of audiences including schools, corporations looking to do team-building activities, art teachers seeking professional development and the everyday person wanting to get creative and learn something new!

A L I N A TA N G Teacher and Manager Alina is a Perth-based artist working between printmaking, performance, and floristry. She has a double major degree in Fine Art and Design from Curtin University, specialising in printmaking. Alina is a heartfelt maker whose work explores the culture of flower-giving, femininity, and intimate relationships. Alina is excited about the local arts community in Perth and is actively involved as a co-director at Paper Mountain. Alina is a welcoming, bubbly tutor with theoretical and practical knowledge she looks forward to sharing. Her classes encourage an enjoyable, practical, and experimental approach in techniques across printmaking.

C A R LY LY N C H Teacher and Assistant Carly is a multi-disciplinary artist, interested in people and their stories. She is a graduate of Curtin University’s Bachelor of Art (Fine Arts & Design), where she majored in print, but her work also branches across the mediums of sculpture, performance, video and installation. By referencing specific historical narratives, her work seeks to deal with notions of loss, recollection, futility and aspiration. She is currently making new work in response to her Nonna’s memories of the month-long voyage she took from Italy to Fremantle as a migrant in the 1950s. Carly is a generous print tutor who will help you to hone your skills across a range of techniques, in an encouraging studio environment.

JOHANNA ACS Teacher and Assistant Johanna joined the Beau Est Mien team in 2013, and has been enthusiastically teaching kids both craft activities and printmaking. Having a background in childcare, she particularly enjoys working with the little ones and seeing how the unique and quirky workings of a child’s mind translate into beautiful and funny artworks.
