Here’s to Peers: A Toast to ST&HV Reviewers 2013–2014

Currents at the intersection of universities and academic publishers confront journals with difficult decisions about how to manage their operations: increasingly brutal publish-or-perish pressures lead to an overall general increase in manuscript volumes, and simultaneously compel authors to seek faster time-to-publication. In this situation, some journals have adopted a peer-review model in which manuscripts receive a simple up-or-down (accept-or-reject) evaluation from reviewers, on the premise that shortcircuiting the commenting and revisions process will speed up final decisions and shorten time to publication. ST&HV doesn’t follow this fast-fare model of scholarship. We favor a review model that seeks to nourish manuscripts with reviewers’ wisdom, guidance, and advice. Generations to come may weigh the effects of these alternative models on scholarly practice and publication; our focus is on what we already see occur every day as we manage ST&HV’s peer review process: With no discernible institutional recognition or reward, reviewers donate their scarce time and precious attention to improve the quality of STS scholarship. As best we can determine they do it because they care deeply about our field and subscribe to the values of selfless service that characterize the academic vocation. ST&HV’s authors and readers benefit from the fruits of this careful cultivation of manuscripts: relevant literature and empirical phenomena are treated in more subtle and respectful ways; kernels of ideas are harvested from relatively inchoate perceptions and further nurtured; nuanced notions are stated more clearly and precisely. For all this we cherish and celebrate this invisible, collaborative writing process, and we honor our reviewers for

their devotion to the classical practice of peer review. It is one of the ways, the really positive ways, in which scholarship is a social process, and speed is no substitute for it. Please join us in a toast to ST&HV’s reviewers: The authors, readers, and editors of ST&HV raise our glasses in your honor!
