“CD BURN” USING TOAST

Here in the ACG Lab students can Burn to a CD up to 650 MB of data. This is a useful and practical way of copying and backing up your work; thereby freeing up you zip disks. Making these zip disk available for future work and classes. CD’s are also a good way of storing your projects and delivering them to other parties. There is one computer station in the ACG lab, computer station #ACG 32, that is connected to a Pinnacle CD Burner. This computer has the software application “Toast 3.5,” which is used to copy and load files and folders for recording to a CD burn “session.” In order to open Toast, double click on the ACG hard drive and open the Utilities folder, Double click on the Toast Adaptec icon. If at any time you need more fully discussed information, Refer to the Toast Users Manual, an acrobat file which is the Toast folder, located on the same computer station as the Toast application software. Once opened a grey window appears, you can simply drag and drop your project, folders and files right onto the Toast window. With some propers settings, insert and load your blank recordable CD and record. But it is best to do some preparation first.

Some preparation before you begin. Create and name a New Folder on the Hard drive. This folder will be where you copy over all your projects, folders and files. Give this folder and name that you can identify later for the given CD. This name will remain permanent after recording to CD, and you won’t be able to change it later.

You can create and name a folder a second way by simply dragging and dropping all you projects, files and folders onto the grey Toast window. Select either a MacVolume, or Mac Files & Folders by doing the steps below.

Mac Volume: There are two ways to select this setting. The first is by selecting from the format menu and selecting Mac Volume. The second is by simply clicking on the grey window in the upper third left portion just below the word Toast. A message box will come up and there you name this volume.

Mac FILES & Folders: You can also create this format the same way as above, copying over all the projects, folders and files you want to record a session and put them in the folder you just created. Consider ordering them in a chronological order, by project date, size or of importance. This order will also remain the same after you record to a CD, and you won’t be able to change later. By double clicking on the Data box you can view all your items

Somethings to consider. Size: Since each CD can hold up to 650 MB, you can either fill up the whole CD with data for one “session,” or two or more multiple sessions. These sessions can be done at a later time. Sessions: Sessions are a single “burn recorded session.” Each time you record designated space on your CD is a session. You can determine how many sessions you want. This is one of the last steps to be considered before you insert your blank CD into the recorder and ask the CD burner to record. This will be discussed later. Partitions: Partitioning is a way of allocating a volume of volume of space on your Hard Drive. In the utilities menu, you can select, “Create a Partition.” This space can then be defragmented to create a clean volume in which to drop you folders and files. This technique has been suggested on computers whose Hard Drives are not maintained regularly. The computers in the ACG Lab are maintained regularly, so with this current version of Toast 3.5 it is not necessary to create a partition. Read more about optimizing a Hard Drive in the Toast Users Manual, an acrobat file which is in the Toast folder.

SETTING UP Open up the “Toast Adaptec” Icon by double clicking in the Utilities folder. Toast will open to a grey window or else you can select, “File Open.” Once this window is open, from left to right on the menu select you settings. Under edit preferences window verify the displayed image below. Disk Cache is assigned to # of ACG Hard Drive

Ram Cache is set at 2MB, which is 2X. This represents the speed at which your CD Burner is recording. The Pinnacle Micro used in this lab is a 2X recorder

The preferred drive is the designated cable hookup to the burner..

SPACE: Move over to Utilities menu and select create temporary partition. Under size enter 640. It is a food idea to give yourself about 10 MB of free space on the CD available for discrepancies allowed in recorder speed or transmission. Verify the ACG# is the same as your computer and click ok. idea to give yourself about

Format: Now you will select what type of volume is going to be recorded There are two ways to do this. First under Format menu, make your choice selection. Mac Volume is recorded as a single MacVolume. Mac Files & Folders record individual file and folders.

ISO. 9660- Mac/ ISO Hybrid These selections are for a CD that you want to be read by PC computers. Creating a Hybrid volume that was recorded from a Mac platform, can be read by PC’s. Provided that also use proper naming convention for you Mac files. Read more about Mac / ISO Hybrid settings in more detail from the Toast Users Manual, an acrobat file which is in the Toast folder.

If you are recording music to a CD you will want to choose Audio Tracks , creating your own CD, to be played on CD players. A second way to select the selections is by simply clicking and holding down the mouse on the grey window in the upper third left portion just below the word Toast. CD-I format is for recording pre-authored images. Enhanced Music CD would be selected for audio tracks and data combined. Video CD is not discussed here. For further explanation and “ how to” for Music, and these other formats on Sound and Video, refer to the Toast Users Manual, an acrobat file which is in the Toast folder.

Disc Image format allows you to write previously created disc images to disc (such images can be created with Toast, or by other applications.)

TO BURN Now you are ready to “burn” and record a CD. You will need a CD “caddy”. This “caddy” is what you place the blank CD into, which is then properly inserted into the Pinnacle Micro CD recorder. You Cannot insert the blank CD only, and you will need this in order to record. The lab aid can assist you with one if available, or you can get you own. Make sure the grey Toast window is visible. Simply drag and drop the named folder you created holding all your projects, folders and files, that is in the Hard Drive. Double Click the select the data box an you will see your folders and files in the window. Select Done. Select the Search box and a message box will ask you to insert your CD into the recorder. Place the “caddy” into the recorder with the metal side face down tag and arrow end in first.

When the bar reaches the end at the right select Done.

A dialog box will appear asking to check speed. Observe this box and keep it open to until the bar processes through and reads the data in your folder to be burned. At the same time the two green bars will be running side-by side, displaying the speed of the CD burner matched with your data. In most cases every thing some appear just fine. If the meter falls and into the red then you may need to refer to the Toast Users Manual and make some setting adjustments.

Ask your instructor or the lab aid for assistance. A new dialog box will appear and you will be asked to write to multiple session or write a CD. Lets return to the topic of a sessions. as a single CD session and multiple session. Before the recording process begins, you now make the selection. The Write Sessions button selection will allow you to write multiple sessions. That is recording one “burn” now, and recording another session later. e.g. You may want to record two or more MacVolumes in one sit, this may be a total of 460 MB. and return at a later time for another sit to fill you your disk with an additional 150 MB. The Write Disc button selection will record as one session to your CD as one session, and you won’t be able to write another.

Processing: A processing bar will appear to display the CD recording process. Depending on how big your session is this may take some time. Open the control strip and turn the volume up a little bit and you will hear the bell chime at the end when the process bar is done. After this processing report is over a Verifying process bar will appear. Allow this verifying report process to finish, the bell chime will ring again. This process double checks and secures the recording on to you CD. After this process is complete, click done and push the green eject button on the Pinnacle Micro recorder to eject and retrieve you CD. At this time, if you so decide you can insert another blank CD, and burn another CD as a back up. When you have finished and are done, Quit out of Toast and trash your project, folders, or files form the Hard drive.

Toast lets you create CDs’ in many popular formats: A summary of formats is defined below. • Mac Fries & Folders, which lets you easily create an HFS CD containing any files or . folders you choose. • Mac Volume, which is used to copy an entire volume or partition to a CD in HFS format. • ISO 9660; for making CDs which are compatible with a wide range of systems, including DOS, Windows, Unix, Macintosh and more. Now includes Joliet support for Windows 95 and WindowsNT. • Mac/ISO Hybrid, combines the benefits HFS and ISO on a single disc. Toast even lets you define “shared” data to save disc space. • Audio CD for creating your own audio CDs from existing CDs or from standard sound files which can be played in any standard CD player. • CD-i for writing pre-authored CD-i images to disc. • Enhanced Music CD (CD EXI RA) format that combines audio tracks and data. • Video CD, creates CDs which can be played by Video CD or CD-i players. • SCSI Copy for making a direct copy of a hard drive or CD. • Disc Image format allows you to write previously created disc images to disc (such images can be created with Toast, or by other applications.) • Multitrack CD-ROM XA for writing existing XA tracks to disc. • Mixed Mode, combines data in HFS, ISO or any other format and audio tracks. For more detailed information Refer to the Toast Users Manual, an acrobat file which is the Toast folder.
