Heart Lake Secondary SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) ARTS AND CULTURE Our SHSM program in Arts and Culture at Heart Lake S.S. encompasses the areas of Visual Art, Digital Media, Drama, Music, Social Studies and Business. The in-school program consists of a bundle of courses in each of the areas which will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance student learning. Students will be involved in reach ahead experiences and exposure to post secondary institutions such as OCAD, the University of Toronto and Sheridan College. Students will also have an opportunity for job shadowing and job twinning experiences. There will be sector recognized certifications in portfolio evaluation, First Aid and CPR, theatrical lighting, and music repair. In order to complete a SHSM in Arts and Culture, students 1. Complete a bundle of 8 specific courses (see chart below). 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs. 3. Obtain experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning). 4. Document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport. 5. Gain “Reach Ahead Experience” connected to the student’s post secondary plans.
