Stephen Lewis Secondary SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) NON-PROFIT Social Justice and Equity Through International Development At SLSS, our SHSM program is rooted in Social Justice and Equity. The goal of our program is to provide students with the opportunity to build the essential skills of critical thinking, empathy and teamwork that will be needed in the 21st Century workplace. Through enriched experiences and certifications, our SHSM students will ready themselves for post-secondary programs and the increasing employment demands facing their generation. Our community partners such as Right to Play, Stephen Lewis Foundation, Studio89, Unity Charity and Sleeping Children Around the World acknowledge and support this program through their commitment to experiential learning, certifications and exciting reach ahead opportunities. In order to complete an SHSM in Non-Profit students are required to: 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain “Reach Ahead” experience connected to the student’s post-secondary plans.
