Cancer Survivors’ Seminar

Your needs are not the same as someone who is just hearing the word “cancer” for the first time or is in active treatment for his or her cancer. This new seminar series is designed to help you with what comes next, beyond your cancer journey. We will offer FREE osteoporosis screenings, blood pressure screenings, balance information display, nutrition information display, exercise and fitness demos, informational displays by Kettering Health Network Services as well as local vendors, and more. A Kettering Health Network physician will be the keynote speaker, presenting on Osteoporosis, 10 - 11 a.m. We will also have delicious bone healthy refreshments. Fitness Parkinson’s Fitness

This fitness class, taught by a Certified Delay the Disease Parkinson’s Fitness Program Instructor, is designed to allow a safe effective way for patients with Parkinson’s to exercise. This program will focus on posture, gait, freezing, rigidity, balance, fatigue, and confidence. Our goal is to help patients overcome some of the daily obstacles by incorporating a fun fitness routine into their life. Caregivers are encouraged to participate. Tai Chi, a Chinese form of exercise for people of all ages, promotes physical health and ease through the use of slow, even movements and breathing exercises. This program is designed to increase flexibility, improve balance and reduce stress. At Kettering Sports Medicine Center, 4403 Far Hills Avenue, Kettering, OH Kettering Sports Medicine introduces the new Therapy to Fitness program which aims to help people bridge the gap between finishing physical therapy and resuming normal daily activities. The program will also provide professional instruction to anyone interested in fitness, proper lifting technique, and age appropriate exercise. This individualized fitness program provides an hour of one-on-one instruction to work on overall fitness, including cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and strength. A physician’s release may be required if you are a PT patient. It is always in your best interest to consult your physician before beginning any fitness program. Yoga

This class is a gentle, therapeutic approach to yoga which encourages relaxation to relieve stress and ease pain while also increasing strength, flexibility and mobility. As we age our balance decreases and we are more prone to falls. More than 1/3 of adults, age 65 and older, fall each year. These falls can result in serious injury. Our Exercise Physiologist will provide 15 minutes of education and a 15 minute screening to determine your fall risk, based on balance activities. Tips on how to reduce your risk will be discussed. Please note: If you use a cane or a walker, or have been diagnosed with a balance problem, this assessment is not appropriate for you. This one hour class will highlight the health impact of increased activity for those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. We will focus on how to develop a fitness plan, identify barriers to being active, and how to stay safe while being active. Class will be taught by a Kettering Health Network Exercise Physiologist. Class participants will also learn stretching and basic exercises that can be done at home. FITT for Life

This fitness class is designed for beginner exercisers 50 years of age and older. Participants will meet two times per week for six weeks with a Certified Athletic Trainer.You will receive pre and post test results on parameters relating to fitness as well as group instruction. Heart Health Healthy Hearts For Women or Men

This screening will help you to know and improve cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and personal risk factors for heart disease with a few quick tests. It also includes a personal heart health plan. Joslin Diabetes Center offers a free monthly diabetes support group. This group is designed to promote education and provide support for persons with diabetes, their families and friends. It serves as a forum for individuals to ask questions, obtain support, and to learn information. At Sycamore Primary Care, 2115 Leiter Road, Miamisburg, OH Diabetes Self-Management Education: Learn about diabetes and how to care for yourself while maintaining a healthy balance in your life. Group classes and individual appointments offered at various times taught by a nurse and dietitian. Pre-diabetes Class: 90 minute class taught by a registered dietitian. Guidance provided to make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay diabetes. Nutrition Counseling: Individual appointments with a registered dietitian for various health concerns including heart disease, food intolerances, gastrointestinal problems, kidney disease, celiac disease. LEARN-(Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, Relationships & Nutrition): Small groups that meet for a 12 week weight management program taught by a registered dietitian. Key principles include caloric restriction, increased physical activity, and behavior modification. Register for free information session. 1. Coat the insert of the slow cooker with a thin layer of butter or use a crockpot liner. Add the water, oats, milk, brown sugar, and salt and stir to combine. 2. Cover and cook on low until the oats are cooked through and creamy, about 8 hours (overnight) Stir in the Vanilla Extract and serve immediately. 3. If desired, add a chopped up apple (or dried fruit) and a handful of chopped walnuts for extra crunch, more fiber and healthy omega 3 fats! 4. Reheat leftovers in microwave and add milk if needed to thin it. Oatmeal is good for approximately 4 days in the refrigerator.
