Adventure

around every corner GPS technology has changed the way we live, placing modern navigation in the palms of our hands, and creating the innovative sport GEOCACHING. Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. People from all over the globe hide caches (treasures) and post the locations of these caches on the internet. Anyone with a GPS receiver can enter latitude and longitude coordinates to hunt for caches. Caches can be anything from small trinkets to a larger location, such as Minotaur Mazes’ GPS Adventures!

The exhibit was GREAT! Not only was it fun and interesting and passed along a ton of information, but it also attracted a wonderful audience to Pacific Science Center. These visitors are our target demographic! That is to say, they are young and old, are people who enjoy learning, are into technology, love puzzle solving, enjoy getting out, and support their community. — Stan Orchard, Web Publisher, Pacific Science Center

OV E RV I E W Get lost in the maze and learn to find your way using the latest technology! Visitors simulate GPS technology as a signal traveling through space by navigating the maze, locating four content-rich satellite galleries along the way, and stamping their game card in each gallery to locate and “lock in” their Treasure City. Sound easy? Don’t forget you’re still in a maze! Pathways may lead to waterfalls, cliffs or ravines. Plus, visitors are only able to access satellite galleries after solving puzzles and games commonly found while geocaching. Visitors may explore the maze in any direction, making for different experiences throughout the different galleries.

GEOCACHING: A SPORT, A GAME, A FAMILY ACTIVITY Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. The basic idea is to hide caches (treasures) and post the locations of these caches on the internet. Anyone with a GPS receiver can enter the location’s coordinates to find the caches. Then you can log the caches at www. geocaching.com to show that you’ve found them.

It sounds easier than it is. The location may be difficult to get to or the cache may be well hidden. There may be a puzzle to solve or information to collect before you can calculate the final location. Or the first cache may contain the location of a second cache containing the location of a third and so on until you find the final cache.

INTER ACTI V ES

Everyone likes to get in on the action, which is why we at Minotaur Mazes build each exhibition so that visitors can interact with and impact their environment. It helps visitors retain and remember information. Plus, it’s a lot of fun! GPS Adventures takes visitors on an exciting journey through puzzles, treasures, and four satellite galleries. Throughout the adventure, visitors will explore the history of navigation, GPS and Geocaching, and decode geocaching riddles and games in cities, mountains, and parks. Don’t forget your passport! FLOOR GRAPHICS Mirroring travel with a GPS unit, visitors are able to read their location at all times. But exciting outdoor obstacles may require creative problem solving. Visitors learn that although GPS points in the right direction, it does not always guide the way – you still need to use your own brain power!

IN TER ACTI V ES HISTORIC SITE CACHE

Solve the multi-cache to find the secret code to enter the gallery. What’s a multi-cache? It involves two locations. The first cache gives you a hint to find the second location. This cache takes you to a local historic site without interfering with the rules, respect or safety of the site. WHERE AM I? Which is easier: traditional navigation or GPS technology? Try both and see for yourself. GLOBE PLOTTING Learn to plot latitude and longitude. Find sample cities and give it a shot. WHICH WAY DO I GO? Learn how to use a compass, a necessary tool even if you have a GPS unit. For example, a map and compass will lead the way if your batteries die. Make outdoor adventures safer…know before you go! HOW DOES GPS FIGURE OUT WHERE I AM? Become the signal! Grab a line, measure the distance between three satellites and discover three mystery locations. VIDEOS Short, funny videos give an insider peek at outdoor geocaching and a quick overview of navigation’s past and present.
