Happy New Year Fellow Kiwanians The Kiwanis Foundation of Canada has played a very active role in the 2009-2010 Kiwanis year and one of the major areas of support was around Growth for all Kiwanis clubs in Canada. Your $15 per member contribution to the Foundation also goes a long way for the benefit of Kiwanis Youth in Canada. This letter will outline some of the benefits. We have provided, through generous grants for “New Club Building”, growth opportunity support. This grant covers not only adult Kiwanis clubs but ALL Service Leadership Kiwanis Clubs which include Circle K Clubs in Colleges and Universities, Key Clubs in High Schools, Builders Clubs and K-Kids Clubs in both Senior and Primary Public Schools and our newest partner, Aktion Clubs. We have taken a very positive role in supporting the Kiwanis Key Leader Programs in Canada. This coming year we doubled our contribution per participant to lower the cost of registration and allow more Youth to benefit from this leadership program. Your Kiwanis Foundation of Canada continues to promote and encourage scholarship programs for our Youth who require much needed support in covering their cost to attend a college or university. This is accomplished by providing a matching scholarship program to all participating Canadian Kiwanis Clubs in an amount of up to $500 per club. Please be sure to ask your Lt. Governor or Club President about the fantastic “New Member Draw” for a trip for two, Flight and Hotel to the International Kiwanis Geneva Convention or your District Convention. You receive one draw ticket for every new member you bring in by March 31, 2011. Draw started July 1, 2010. Tickets will be drawn April 2011. The Foundation will continue the “Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada Grant” in the amount of $500 for clubs in Canada who donate $1,000 or more to a Boys and Girls Program. There is $30,000 available for our three Kiwanis Districts in Canada. Here is a very important message to all Canadian Kiwanis Clubs. ALL contributions to the Kiwanis International Foundation Programs can be provided through the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada and the funds remain in Canada for our Youth Programs. You receive FULL CREDIT for your contribution towards your distinguished year. Our Foundation Administrator, Elaine Johnson, provides Kiwanis International with the information each year so they are aware of your KIF contribution. When sending your contribution to the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada, please indicate where the donation is to be applied e.g. a Mel Osborne Scholarship Donation, Hixson Fellow, a KFC Program, KIF Program; a Kiwanis International or Canadian Tablet of Honour. We encourage you to visit our “New Web site” to understand how beneficial it is to apply for these many grants and scholarships offered to our Canadian Kiwanis Clubs. www.kfcdn.org In Service to Others,

PG Chuck McIlravey President, Kiwanis Foundation of Canada

KEY LEADER PROGRAM KIWANIS DISTRICT OF EASTERN CANADA AND CARIBBEAN. (PG Chuck McIlravey)

recent camp in October 2010. Positive growth expectations for 2011 are anticipated.

In 2006-2007 when I was the Governor Elect for Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District Governor Ed Kelly asked me if I would look into the Key Leader Program which was struggling in our District. I agreed to talk with the District Key Leader Chair and see what had been happening and listen to his suggestions. The Key Leader District Chair at that time advised me he was having a poor response from Kiwanis Clubs and after we discussed the pros and cons both agreed we needed to overhaul the program. He generously agreed to stay on to help support those changes. I talked with 2 Lt. Governors, Jim McIntosh and Peter Tudisco, and with a little arm twisting sent both of them to Kansas City to experience an actual Key Leader Program weekend. They both returned fully charged with new ideas and positive energy.

At our October 2010 Arden Camp this year, LG Alain Bertrand from Quebec, Division 16, was invited as he had expressed an interest in looking into having a Key Leader Camp in the Province of Quebec. He had an excellent experience in Arden and the possibility of this happening is looking very positive. District Key Leader Chair PLG Jim McIntosh is in discussions with Kiwanis International about the possibilities of having a Key Leader Camp in Jamaica and other Islands in our District. Cost is a factor but he is confident a plan can succeed. This is a work in progress project. The Kiwanis Foundation of Canada came on board supporting the program in 2008 when they agreed to provide a $US25.00 grant for each youth attending to assist in the reduction of the registration costs. Kiwanis International Foundation have a similar grant of $US25.00. At the last Kiwanis Foundation of Canada Board Meeting in Halifax Nova Scotia in September of this year the Foundation approved a doubling of the grant and beginning in January 2011 the grant will be $US50.00 per youth. Once again the Foundation Board has shown

PLG Jim McIntosh agreed to be the District Key Leader Chair and Peter Tudisco with his Key Club experience agreed to be the Site Coordinator in Brantford. The Brantford camp has been successful for the past 3 years with 60+ Youth attending each camp. This did not just happen as both of these Kiwanis Members worked hard to talk with clubs, divisions and encouraged them to read up and understand the program. As you will read, it has worked. The program has never looked back and began to grow with Jim McIntosh discussing other areas with me when I was Governor the following year and he was motivated to see more of these Leadership Camps in the EC&C District. The Key Leader Program was introduced to the East Coast where PIP Glen Bagnell and former Key Club Eastern Canada Assistant District Administrator Ted Bully agreed to take on the Key Leader Program for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Glen became the District Eastern Canada Chair and Marketing Guru to Kiwanis Clubs and Ted the Site Coordinator/Treasurer at the Tim Horton Tatamagouche Camp in Nova Scotia. In 2008 they had 102 in attendance and in 2009 they had 104 in attendance. They have just completed the 3rd Camp with 117 attending. Discussions are now in place about having two camps per year as it is growing far beyond the attendance preferred for each camp. WOW! What a problem to have. The next new Key Leader Camp was Arden Ontario and they have had an excellent start under the guidance of Site Coordinator PLG Chris Andrews of the Westmount Kiwanis Club from Division 10 and his Key Leader Team. The Arden Key Leader Camp has seen solid attendance with 55 in the first camp in 2009 and 60 in attendance at the most

leadership in providing support for the benefit of Youth Leadership Education. In this article you will see group photos of the camp participants from the various camps and an article written by PG Don Tole on the Western Canada Key Leader Camp. Canada has seen a tremendous growth in the Key Leader Programs since 2007. My suggestion to Kiwanis Club Leaders is to take a look at this fantastic program, consider sponsoring 1 or 2 Youth to attend one of these very positive Leadership Camps or better still, volunteer your time and attend one. Take a few minutes and talk with the local Key Leader Coordinator in your area. You will not regret it. More stories will follow on the Key Leader success stories in future Kiwanis Foundation of Canada Newsletters. We are proud to be part of the success of this program. In Service to Others, PG Chuck McIlravey President, Kiwanis Foundation of Canada

Western Canada Key Leader Camps Laurie Billings, President of the Kiwanis Club of Edmonton-Oil Capital, was very much involved in a very successful camp that took place May28-30, 2010 at Camp Health, Hope and Happiness (Camp He-Ho-Ha), 85 kms west of Edmonton. Laurie writes, “45 children were involved in the Camp and by bringing in a facilitator from Kiwanis International, we were guaranteed a great weekend program for everyone that was involved. Please find enclosed a small token of appreciation from the youth who were involved in the program. They understand that without the financial support of the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada, the Camp might not have been possible.” The token of appreciation mentioned above was a “thank you note” from each of the participants expressing their individual reactions to the camp experience. Several are quoted below as testimonies toward the value of Key Leader camps. “The weekend you provided will remain as a fond memory for as long as I live. I give great thanks for the skills I’ve learned and friends I’ve made.” “I’ve had a great time this weekend exploring my values and myself. I am very thankful for this opportunity. I feel I know myself a lot better. I thank you very much for seeing the importance of camps like this. I hope others are able to experience this unforgettable camp.” “Thank you for allowing me to attend your camp. This weekend was a great experience for me, it was very eye-opening. I have learned lots about what it takes to set a good example, and lead people in a positive way. In this camp I have learned about self growth, and helping others grow.” “By attending this retreat I have learned the skills and attitude of a Key Leader. I will remember this camp – the lessons, the friends and the experience for the rest of my life. This has truly opened my eyes to what things make me a Key Leader and what I need to work on. I will recommend this camp to any future leaders. Thank you for making me a better leader.” “Thank you to the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada for the overwhelming and all out support for this key leader camp. Without your dedication to bring youth together and mold them into leaders, we wouldn’t be here in this camp.” Under the leadership of Sharon Monaghan of the Brandon-Assiniboine Kiwanis Club as Division Coordinator, a Key Leader weekend is being planned for Camp Arnes, about an hour and a half north of Winnipeg, on September 30-October 2, 2011.
