childminders’ training programme

DEAR COLLEAGUE

Hackney Learning Trust’s childminders training programme for 2014–2015 takes place at the following venues:

We are delighted to introduce our Early Years training programme for the academic year 2014–2015.

Ann Tayler Children’s Centre Linden Children’s Centre

The 2014–15 training brochure provides fee paying and free courses to all Hackney Early Years settings and Early Years Teams in schools. They are delivered by our Early Years Quality Improvement Team, other Trust teams such as the Early Support Team, Safeguarding, Speech and Language Therapy Service and by external training providers on behalf of Hackney Learning Trust.

Hackney Learning Trust The Tomlinson Centre

The training programme reflects the training needs identified through evaluation of courses, analysis of data, issues raised at forums and visits to settings, and feedback from practitioners. It is also based on the statutory requirements and guidance received from the Department for Education. Each course will involve: • active listening; • group discussion; • practical activities; • sharing of practice and experience; • reading, reflecting and recording. For multi day courses, there will be opportunities to engage in ‘between session’ tasks, designed to enable practitioners to reflect upon their own practice. It is important that we are able to evaluate the impact of training when carrying out support and challenge visits to settings. In this way we make sure that our children receive the best possible start to their learning and development.

For more information contact: Childminding Team Hackney Learning Trust 1 Reading Lane, E81GQ T. 020 8820 7502 E. childminding@ learningtrust.co.uk

I hope that settings and practitioners will find the training offer relevant and useful and that it will continue to contribute to the improvements in Early Years provision across the sector, resulting in improved outcomes for children and families in Hackney. Best wishes, Tricia Okoruwa Education Director, Head of Hackney Learning Trust Childminders Training Programme

PLEASE NOTE From April 2015 there will be a charge for all courses in the Childminding brochure.

WHY WE PROVIDE TRAINING

HACKNEY’S CHILDMINDING NETWORKS

High quality Early Years provision makes a difference to children’s life chances and the higher the quality of this provision, the longer its impact can be seen. High quality Early Years provision makes a difference to children’s life chances and the higher the quality of this provision, the longer its impact can be seen.

THE WAY FORWARD Our Training offer will include:

Effective leadership, staff qualifications and training are the key drivers of quality. The Early Years training programme is intended to inform, refresh and update practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of child development, pedagogy and practice. Whereas some of the courses do give practical advice and ideas, the emphasis is on providing challenge and discussion, enabling practitioners to reflect and evaluate their current provision, and to plan improvements and developments needed to raise standards.

• Professional Development Workshops

Children are entitled to learn in an environment which is underpinned by the highest regard for their safety and welfare, and which allows parents to be confident that their child is well cared for. With this in mind, we provide a comprehensive range of training around meeting the welfare standards. Settings should complete risk assessments to identify their training needs in this area. *Please note: Candidates wishing to enrol onto level 3 are required to have GCSE in Maths and English. More information will be available during the information session in June 2014.

Hackney’s Childminding Networks provide support and development for local childminders who deliver high quality childcare and early learning. Childminding Networks are groups of registered childminders who have shown that they can provide high quality care for children in their homes. They are monitored by our childminding network coordinators. Hackney has three quality-assured Childminding Networks who offer support training and monitoring. They all belong to ‘Children Come First’ which is a national quality assurance scheme. Network Childminders provides choice for parents with flexible and high quality childcare.
