EASTCHESTER UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Summer Reading Program

June 14, 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian, I hope this letter finds you well and eagerly anticipating an enjoyable and relaxing summer. Summer is a wonderful time for children to pursue interests that extend beyond those offered in our schools while also allocating time to read and build on academic curiosities. In selecting books for your child to read this summer, please take advantage of the attached summer reading list. We have included a broad array of titles, genres, and areas of interest. We have also partnered with Eastchester’s Public Library to ensure many current titles are reflected on our list, and that they are carrying many of the books. In addition, we are sponsoring a “Summer Reading Challenge” for all students in grades 1-5. The student who reads the greatest number of pages on each grade level in each school will enjoy lunch with Dr. Moran, his or her school principal, and me. Each child is also welcome to invite a parent or guest. While visiting Eastchester (or Tuckahoe) Public Library this summer, be sure to have a librarian sign and place a sticker on your child’s reading log to earn 100 additional bonus pages. The “Summer Reading Challenge” log, to record the number of pages read this summer, can be found on page 17 of this packet. In conversations with parents, I am often asked how to best support a child’s academic growth during extended vacations, such as summer recess. In response, I offer two suggestions. First, ensure your child is reading. Please take advantage of the thoughtful selections included in our summer reading list and ask your child questions about what he or she has read. Second, I hope you take the opportunity to visit museums, zoos, aquariums, and historical sites with your children. These experiences provide your children with authentic, first-hand learning opportunities that make the content of the curricula more meaningful. Not surprisingly, when asked for extended written responses for class assignments and assessments, children naturally draw on these experiences. I wish you all an enjoyable and safe summer, filled with special family memories. Sincerely,

Dr. Ron Hattar Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

Choosing a “Just Right” Book Below are some questions to consider when selecting a “just right” book: Are you interested in the topic? Do you like the illustrations? Can you read or figure out almost all the words?

Use the Five Finger Rule--as you read, count on one hand any unknown words. If you counted 5 words you didn’t know on a page, this book is too hard for you right now and you should try another book.

Can you understand what you are reading? Are you reading the text smoothly without stopping to sound out unfamiliar words?
