AUDITION INFORMATION
MONDAY, AUGUST 22ND – Vocal Auditions (beginning at 3:00 in Nechita)
• Sign up for a 5-‐minute audition time and arrive 15 minutes before that. • (Sign up sheet will be posted on the Nechita Callboard starting Monday, August 15.) • Prepare two songs in contrasting styles both no more than 16 measures of your choice from an actual musical (32 cut measures), but know both songs in their entirety. Please try and select a piece in the style of “Disney”, but not FROM “Beauty and the Beast”. An accompanist will be provided, so please bring a clean copy of your song for them to use in the correct key for you. NO background tapes, CDs, or acapella (ACA-‐DON’T!) auditions will be allowed. Be aware that you might only have to sing one song. • If you are a freshman and have never auditioned for a musical before, you can go to the “Beauty and the Beast” community Blackboard page and pick one of the songs provided for you. Please learn the song and print off the music. This not mandatory, just another option. • Please dress professionally, be prepared and make a character CHOICE. This is your first impression and it is very important. When you enter the Nechita we will ask you to go to the center of the stage and “SLATE”. You need to tell us your name, grade, and the name of the song you will be singing. • If you are auditioning for a dancing role only, please inform us of that in your “SLATE”.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 23RD, 2016 – Dance Auditions (3:00 – 6:00 in Nechita) • Please wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes that you can dance in.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24RD, 2016-‐ CALL BACKS (3:00-‐8:00 in Nechita)
(Students will be dismissed at various times throughout) NOTE: Any music or sides needed will be given to the student upon arrival at callbacks or you can check BLACKBOARD. There is no need to memorize prior but you should be very familiar with the whole show. PLEASE BRING YOUR IPADS TO CALLBACKS! • Students will be asked to sing songs and act out various scenes from “Beauty and the Beast”. Since you do not know how many times you will be asked to read or sing it is IMPORTANT that you do your very best for EVERY role you are asked for. MAKE A CHARACTER CHOICE. We will be casting many characters off only a few reads. • This show is EXTREMELY movement involved. Please be aware that demonstrating a high level of athleticism will be encouraged.

A few thoughts on the audition process… “Gosh, I hope I get it!” This is the wish every actor has whispered after auditioning for a role he really wants to play. So how does he actually get cast in the role? Casting is a tricky thing. You should feel honored to receive any part as each and every one is vital to the plot and was cast with much consideration. “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST” is especially tricky in the sense that the plot and the success of the show rely heavily on the ensemble. When shows are cast, the directors have a million things they have to take into consideration. When we cast at OLu, we are looking for talent but more importantly, great auditions, direct-‐ability, attitude, focus, acting technique, projection, choice of material, choices within the material, vocal ability, and a willingness to try. We honestly work to give each actor and each cast a wonderful experience, in the rehearsal process and in performance. There are multiple theatrical professionals that cast the shows and we always lift each step of the process up in prayer. Casting is like putting together a giant puzzle. The actors who auditioned are the puzzle pieces. Our challenge is to move the puzzle pieces around until we fulfill the big picture and complete the puzzle to the best of our ability, satisfying all of our requirements for each show. It’s not an easy task when you consider how many AMAZING students audition for each production! Faced with such a challenge, it becomes clear how important the audition is. The audition process can be scary and nerve-‐ wracking, but it is essential. We know auditioning isn’t easy but we are cheering you on every step of the way. For every role, there are multiple wonderful choices of students we could cast—all of which would create great versions of the show. A lot of matching and moving and thinking and rethinking, trying out combinations of people for the different roles to create the best “puzzle” for “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”. Trust us, we are rooting for you ALL to shine! We want to see you capture each character so that our decisions are clear. We go into each audition with a clean slate, fairly and eagerly awaiting your wonderful auditions. So to all of the actors, thank you for having the courage to tryout. You should already be proud of yourself! Thank you for wanting to be a part of this production and the Lancer Arts family. We feel excited and blessed to bring “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST” to life!
