Optional excursions Northern Discovery – Basse Terre

Departure from the hotel. After crossing the Rivière Salée, you will take the Route des Mamelles meandering through the lush National Park (tropical rainforest). Photo stop at the "Cascade aux Ecrevisses" (Crayfish Waterfall). Then, heading northwards to Malendure (on the Caribbean coast), you will discover Jacques Cousteau’s underwater protected reserve at Pigeon Island aboard a glass-bottom boat "le Nautilus". Snorkeling equipment is available for water enthusiasts, and even non-divers can admire the underwater plants and wildlife. A refreshing drink will be provided aboard. Then, you will leave Malendure heading north, along the leeward coast and stop for a Creole lunch in Pointe Noire or Deshaies. In the afternoon, visit of Deshaies’ Botanical Garden, an 11 acre garden and animal park with exceptional landscapes owned by “Coluche” a well known French Humorist who died in 1986 and also the founder of the association Restos du Coeur in France. You will enjoy a walking path realized by landscape professionals with a parrots’ village, a waterfall, a pink flamingos resort, tropical plants and flowers, water lily ponds. Return to the hotels via SainteRose and Lamentin towns.

Soufrière (volcano) hiking

Departure from the hotel with a 4x4 or a coach (according to the number of participants) and arrival at the Volcano House where dried fruits and water will be distributed. Hike begins at the Bains Jaunes. During the ascent to the summit your guide will explain all about the volcano, its history and the specific vegetation around it. Back at the foot of the volcano and swim at the Bains Jaunes, a wonderful hot and sulphur pool in the middle of the forest which welcoming after a long hike. A snack will be offered (sandwich and water). Back to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. USEFUL INFORMATION: don’t forget to wear good hiking shoes and to bring a raincoat and warm clothes, a hat or cap, a camera, a backpack, a bathing suit and bath towel.

Les Saintes

Terre de Haut- Les Saintes Early departure from the hotel to the port of Pointe-à-Pitre or Trois-Rivières where you board a ferry boat to "Les Saintes". Discovered on November 4th 1493, by Christopher Colombus, the Saintes Archipelago was called "Los Santos" in honor of All Saints’ Day. Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas are the only inhabited islands with a total population of over 3 000 habitants. The boat will land at Terre-de-Haut, an island populated mostly by Britain, Poitou and Normandy fishermen descendants. Fishing is still the island's main activity. A minibus will take you to Fort Napoléon which was completed in 1867. You will visit its museum dedicated to the history and culture of les Saintes. After a walk through the exotic garden, you will be guided to a nice beach. Bathe until midday, then lunch at a seaside restaurant, where you can enjoy local dishes. In the afternoon, time for shopping in Terre-de-Haut village before the return trip to the hotel.

Marie-Galante

Early departure from the hotel to the port of Pointe à Pitre (or St François). After approximatively 1 hour of ferry boat ride, arrival at Marie-Galante, an island that has retained its historic charm. Discovered on November 3, 1493, by Christopher Columbus, it was baptized "Marie-Galante" in memory of his ship. Welcome at Grand Bourg by the Island’s guide. Stop at its picturesque marketplace. Bathe at one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. Visit of a rum distillery, a manioc flour manufacture, discovery of the ancestral way of handmade products such as cassavas (manioc flour pancakes). All along your visit, you can admire the island’s landscape very similar to Grande Terre in Guadeloupe, sugar cane fields, ox carts and beautiful beaches. Lunch at a Creole restaurant. Back to Grand Bourg and board at 3.45 p.m. to Pointe-à-Pitre. Transfer back to your hotel.
