Our graduates can go on and make a real difference in society As Chancellor of Adam Smith College I would like to congratulate all of those who are graduating this week at the four College Graduation ceremonies. I have been very pleased to be able to visit the College regularly throughout the year and to see first-hand the great work being carried out by staff and students. In August I was extremely proud to introduce speakers Sir James Wolfensohn and Dr Nicholas Phillipson to the prestigious Adam Smith Lecture held here in St Bryce Kirk and hosted by Adam Smith College. The ongoing success of Adam Smith College can be seen in the quality and quantity of students graduating this year in a wide range of subject areas. I would like to take this opportunity once again to congratulate those graduating and also thank their family,
friends and College staff for supporting them through their studies allowing them to reach their true potential. Our graduates can now go on to make a real difference in today’s society and in the world of work. Gordon Brown MP Chancellor of Adam Smith College

Giving students the skills, abilities and confidence to shape their world THE achievements of students graduating from Adam Smith College are being celebrated this week. But as well as congratulating the students, Carol Humbert, executive director, says there are many people in the background who deserve credit for the support and encouragement which has been crucial in these successes. Carol said: “We take students from a range of diverse backgrounds, and Adam Smith College offers a breadth and depth of curriculum that I don’t think is equalled in Scotland. “That gives students a variety of opportunities to acquire knowledge and develop vocational skills. “Our graduation ceremonies are recognition of the success and hard work of the students, and it’s a real celebration of their achievements. “But it is also a real team
effort. ‘‘There is support from families, partners and friends, as well as the college lecturers and support staff – they’ve all played their part in the students’ successes. “The graduation ceremonies are an opportunity to pay tribute to everyone involved. College education is not just about studying a particular course, it’s about giving people new skills and confidence, and the belief and abilities to go forward and progress, to take and seize new opportunities.’’ Aileen Lamden, executive director, added: “Last year was another hugely successful year. We’ll have hundreds of students crossing the stage on Thursday and Friday. It’s brilliant. People all with their own stories to tell. All making a success. “There are numerous examples of where college and learning have transformed people’s lives,
and the board, senior management and staff at Adam Smith are proud to be part of that. “Some people who will be graduating this week will have returned to education - perhaps some who didn’t do so well at school in the past or have been busy and they want to do something different. “Adam Smith College has helped them gain new skills and given them renewed confidence in their abilities. “Rather than just accepting their world, they should have the skills and confidence to actually shape their world. The college has added value to their lives, and they have added value to the college, and that’s a real success story.” Going forward, Irene Morrison, chair of the board of governors, accepts the current tough economic times are creating challenges for everyone, but Adam Smith
College graduates are well placed to make a positive contribution in the workplace and their communities. “Our qualifications and our vocations, are geared towards where there is demand,” said Irene. “We don’t offer courses where there are no jobs. That would be wrong of us. We are very much focused on employability. ‘‘That’s a key part of what we do, so people have the opportunity to secure the jobs that are out there. “We really try to focus on the job market of Fife and the wider area. “For example, last year we had the first year of a degree in conjunction with Abertay University and Dundee College, focusing on the renewable industries. “We are now into our second year of that, offering qualifications in renewables and sustainable energies, but we would also wish to take people with existing
qualifications in engineering and to retrain them for the new jobs which come through the likes of the Fife Energy Park and BiFab.” Christine Stronach, vice principal, curriculum, added: “Our graduates will have a crucial role to play in shaping Fife, Scotland and the wider world in terms of what they now go on to do. “These graduation ceremonies are a celebration of learning, which has the ability to transform lives. I believe that is something Adam Smith College does particularly well, and we should rightly be proud of that. “We’re proud of the college and we’re proud of our students and all that they have achieved, and I hope each and every one of them uses the qualifications, skills and confidence they have gained at Adam Smith College to make the most of the opportunities which come there way in life.”

Fellowships for college stalwarts ADAM Smith College’s graduation ceremonies will include some special presentations this year. Fellowships are to be awarded to a world renowned Fifer, a company with a global brand and a charitable trust which has made a significant contribution to the Kingdom. The Fellowships will be conferred by the Adam Smith Foundation, the College’s charitable trust, and will be made during the evening ceremonies. The recipients include Jack Vettriano, the famous Fife born artist who is regarded as one of the most successful to emerge from Scotland. His paintings have sold in their millions across the globe, and his most famous work, ‘The Singing Butler’ sold at auction for a world record price of almost £750,000. Self-taught, the former mining engineer based many of his early works in Fife, and he remains a strong supporter of the Kingdom and the College. In 2010 he chose to launch his new exhibition, ‘Days Of Wine And Roses’ in Kirkcaldy before it went on to tour some of the biggest cities in the world. And in 2000 the Jack Vettriano art scholarship was established, and since then has supported 44 creative students through their studies to achieve their dreams. The College is delighted to also have welcomed Jack during this time to hold two ‘Audience with Jack Vettriano’ events which helped to raise a substantial amount of money

to benefit students. Diageo is another major success story in Fife. The Leven-based company is the world’s leading premium drinks business with an outstanding collection of international brands across spirits, beer and wine. The Diageo Engineering Scholarship was set up in 2003 and since then has helped to support 29 students. John Paterson, Diageo’s recently retired former site manager, is now a Foundation Trustee. He has been particularly supportive of the scholarship programme, and for many years he welcomed students to tour Diageo’s bottling plant at Banbeath in Leven to receive their scholarship awards. The Russell Trust will also be made a Fellow of the Foundation in recognition of its support and generosity throughout the years. The Adam Smith Foundation was set up 15 years ago to improve and extend opportunities for students and has successfully awarded a wide range of scholarships over the years totalling an amazing £350,000 to nearly 700 students. The College is very proud of the scholarship programme. Its generous donors, who come from all walks of life, help to ensure that it continues to go from strength to strength each year. Many of the graduands attending this year’s ceremonies will also have been deserving recipients of scholarships and the support they have received will have helped to ensure that they are graduating this year. Aileen Lamden, executive director, said: “We are delighted to welcome many of our donors to the Graduation ceremonies and to also bestow Fellowships on three of them. These Fellowships are the first to be awarded by the Adam Smith Foundation and recognise the significant role all our donors play in supporting hundreds of our students every year. “We congratulate our Fellows and wish them and the Foundation every success for the future.”

Design skills from Adam Smith lead to job offer IT has been a fantastic end to the academic year for Adam Smith College student Ida Hallgren who has recently been awarded Best of Year in the prestigious D&AD Student Awards held in London. Ida (24), from Stockholm, came to Scotland on a gap year to spend time with her Scottish boyfriend. Having taken a break from her job in marketing with global giant sports firm Adidas, Ida looked into various courses to develop her career and after hearing good things about the courses at Adam Smith College she enrolled on the HNC 3D Design course. As part of the course students are encouraged to take part in a number of competitions and design awards throughout the year. This year Ida was among a handful of students picked by lecturer Colin MacKenzie who submitted their work for the competition. Ida’s submission of a hotel room of the future for the Environmental Design category went down a storm with the judges and she was delighted to receive the Best of Year award. The D&AD Student Awards are professional awards celebrating new creative excellence in the world of design and advertising. The awards, which have been running since 1978, help students make themselves known in the increasingly competitive creative industry. open to all students whether they are in full or part-time education and categories for the awards range from copywriting and photography to digital and furniture design. Ida’s employers Adidas were soon to spot her talent and offered her a new job as an interior store designer which she started when she returned to Stockholm. Said Ida: “I really enjoyed living and studying in Scotland. Receiving the D&AD award was a great end to my year in Fife. ‘‘I have just started my new job as an interior store designer at Adidas and I’m loving it. It’s very challenging, I’m constantly learning new things which is great. ‘‘I am now taking on projects myself such as designing exhibition areas and working on new shop installations in Copenhagen and Norway. My time at Adam Smith has given me the skills and qualifications I need to continue and develop my career with Adidas and I’m really grateful for all of the help and support I have received.” Colin MacKenzie, Curriculum Head for Design, said: “Ida was extremely focussed and showed a real creative flair. Competitions such as D&AD provide a great learning experience for our students which helps prepare them for the world of work. Ida has a promising career ahead of her and I wish her all the best.’’

Australia beckons for the chance of a lifetime ... TEN Adam Smith College students are the first in the world to graduate with a new global qualification after taking part in the trip and learning experience of a lifetime! The students will graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Working Globally which is the first qualification of its kind to be made available to a college within the United Kingdom. The students, who have all previously completed Higher National or Degree level study with the College, left for Australia in February to embark on a the new qualification. The College was able to offer the course to students after taking full advantage of a new European project - Co-operation in Higher Education and Vocational Training Industrialised Countries Instrument, Education Co-operation Programme with the aim of enhancing the skills and employability of its graduates. The graduate level course, developed in partnership with European and Australian colleges, is aimed at providing those freshly qualified with the international skills that today’s global workforce requires within the hospitality industry. The course lasts for six months and includes two months of study and one month work placement in Melbourne plus three months study back at Adam Smith College in Kirkcaldy. The students were
joined with others from the Netherlands and Denmark. Part of the exchange programme involved the arrival in April of eight students from Australia who all studied at the College’s St Brycedale campus. Bryan McCabe, Department Manager for Hospitality and Fashion said: “We are thrilled that the first students to complete this new qualification will now be graduating. This course is a fantastic opportunity for our students and has been life changing for many of them as those individuals who have global skills, and can think on a global scale, have significant advantage in the workplace and are sought after around the world. “We are currently looking at funding opportunities to enable us to run the course again next year.” William Dickson (23), from Kirkcaldy, a previous Hospitality student, is currently working as assistant manager at the Dunnikier House Hotel in Kirkcaldy. Said William: “Visiting and studying in Australia was fantastic. I was there for three months. ‘My placement was in the amazing five star Langham Hotel which was hard work but very rewarding. The whole experience was brilliant and I gained a great deal from it. Long term it would be great to go back.’’

TRACY Thomson from Glenrothes is carving out a great career in childcare thanks to lots of hard work and some help from Adam Smith College. The bubbly 30-year-old graduates this week with a PDA in Childhood Practice to add to her other childcare qualifications, all of which have helped her secure an assistant manager’s job at Smart Cookies Nursery in the pretty village of Falkland. Tracy helps to manage the day-to-day running of the privately run nursery which looks after around 28 children per day from 5 months to 5 years. Working with the preschool children is Tracy’s favourite area of her work alongside developing activities to help offer a fun, stimulating and educational environment for all of the children. After leaving school Tracy did a Beauty Therapy course and then trained in Fashion Design which led her on to working in a tie factory. She never settled and it wasn’t until she had her son Jack that she decided to try childcare. Tracy quickly realised that she had found her niche and was keen to learn as much as she could, enrolling on a range of courses over the years. Said Tracy: ”I love my job, it doesn’t feel like a job really as I enjoy it so much. “The team here are like a family and the setting of the nursery in Falkland means there are lots of places to take the children including beautiful walks and interesting things to see and do right on our doorstep. “Gaining the right qualifications is important to me and I am delighted to be graduating this week and look forward to going on to study a degree in the near future.”

BROTHERS Luke and Daniel Hacon-Deavin from Glenrothes are flying high after successfully completing an HNC in Shipbuilding at Adam Smith College. The course, which was studied via their employers, Babcock, has helped both men to secure brighter futures for themselves and their families. Daniel (35), was recently promoted into a supervisor role and Luke is keen to secure a job in Quality at the base in Rosyth, thanks to their new qualifications. Both men studied the course part-time at the College’s Stenton Campus in Glenrothes while working full-time as shipwrights on the Royal Navy’s two new 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers. Said Luke: “The course has been great as it has given

Learning on the job >> reaping benefits of saturday classes WHEN Sharon Gill from Kirkcaldy enrolled on a one hour per week shorthand course at Adam Smith College, little did she know it was to lead to much bigger and brighter things. After successfully completing her shorthand course a few years ago Sharon was advised that she had credits towards a further qualification and was encouraged by her lecturers to join an HNC Business Admin course. Sharon was excited about the prospect and enjoyed it so much decided to go on and do the HND. Gaining an HND opened doors for Sharon and meant that she could apply for other jobs. within the NHS Sharon applied for an assistant manger’s position and was successful. Sharon yhas also enrolled to do a degree in Business Admin, also through Adam Smith College. Said Sharon: “I’m using existing skills and experience of working with the NHS alongside my new skills and qualifications that I picked up during my time at college. I enjoy setting up systems and also like the people contact part of my job. The main reason I have been able to continue studying is due to the courses being run on a Saturday morning which has enabled me to fit it around bringing up my family and working full-time.’’

A GROUP of staff from Adam Smith College will be celebrating alongside the other graduates this year after successfully completing a degree course while working at the College. The students, six of whom are pictured, have worked their way through HNC and HND courses before completing a BA course in Business Administration just before the summer. Their new qualification is already helping some of the staff secure new jobs within the College. Audrey Wilson from Kirkcaldy was recently promoted to Registry Specialist and is delighted to now have her degree. Said Audrey: “The degree course took only two
years part-time to complete since I already had an HND. It was hard work but worth it. “I enjoy working at the College – seeing all the students studying does make you want to improve your own qualifications and it has been achievable thanks to our own hard work and support from the College.
