News about graduate students, alums and faculty Students MSN student Kelli Hawk will marry Dave Kulpa on September 12, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. MOD student Adrienne Oliver has a new position as a juvenile corrections officer, mentoring children and young adults at the Milwaukee County Juvenile Detention Center.

Alums Doug Arendt, MA ’01 and ’04 was featured in the Profiles in Education column in the Cedarburg News Graphic on April 16, 2009. Arendt teaches at John Long Middle School. Patricia Cox, MA ’01 has a new position at the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Recently she authored the department’s application for the Second Chance Act. Patricia credits her Alverno education with helping her become an effective writer. She also has a regular column focused on technology, specifically the application of Access, in Strategic Finance, the journal of the Institute of Management Accountants. Kay Czaplewski, MSN ’08, BC-ADM, recently took the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) exam for Advanced Diabetes Management and passed. She is now Board Certified in the field of Advanced Diabetes Management! Kay joins two other master’s nursing graduates who also are certified through ANCC as advanced practice nurses. Linda Bay, MSN ’07, RN, ACNS-BC, CCRN, reports that the nursing unit at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital (VAH) where she is the Clinical Nurse Specialist recently won a runner up award in a nationwide program, Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB), sponsored by the American Organization of Nurse Executives. This award represents a significant recognition of this nursing unit’s efforts to improve care for medical-surgical patients. TCAB is a unique national initiative sponsored by the Institute for Health care improvement and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Ms. Bay also reports she was recently recognized at the VAH as Employee of the Month! Faculty Reading Faculty Member Suzann Gardner recently served as keynote speaker in the Medical College’s Spotlight on Science program. Graduate Dean Mary Diez was a presenter for a webinar on "What Every Teacher Educator Should Know About 21st-Century Assessment Strategies" sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Diez’s presentation was entitled “Alverno College’s Approach to Integrating Assessment in Teacher Preparation.” On May 13, Diez will serve on a panel at the United Community Center addressing “Improving Access to Latino/a Students: Shared Best Practices and Goals.” The panel was organized by the Greater Milwaukee Catholic Education Consortium and Diez drew upon her work as chair of the board at Carmen H.S. of Science and Technology in addressing the topic.
