ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

Specialising in Electrical Engineering Antonio De le Mata Chico I joined the Leonardo Helicopters Undergraduate Programme during my final year at the University of Glasgow and was given the opportunity to conduct my final year project whilst working in the company’s software and simulation department. During this time I was involved in a European R&D programme aimed at developing new, scalable cockpit applications. I carried out conceptual design and prototype development of Helmet-Mounted Display symbology to increase flight safety during helicopter operations in degraded visual environments. The knowledge and experience gained as an undergraduate allowed me to produce a strong thesis that helped me gain a first class Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering soon after. Joining the Engineering Graduate Programme has given me depth of technical knowledge in aircraft and systems. I spent my first three months in Electrical Systems where I was involved in all the steps a designer takes to find a solution to a problem. These range from establishing the requirements to finalising the design including details such as dimensions and materials. In addition, I was able to practice my presentation skills during multiple customer reviews carried out between these steps as the design developed. I then joined the Electromagnetic Compatibility team where I gained a good understanding of how electrical devices influence each other when interconnected or are close to one another. I was involved in numerous trials that provided me with valuable hands on experience on the aircraft. I am currently working in the Avionics department where I have been immersed in the process of bringing together a set of avionics components into one system and ensuring that these components function together as a whole. During this time I have had the opportunity to contribute to the successful completion of aircraft systems tests.

ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

General Engineering Daniel McKenna Following a year’s industrial experience as an Engineering Undergraduate I was keen to come back onto the Graduate Development Programme. With a personal interest in composite materials, I have stayed close to the technology in most placements. I have got involved in various aspects of composite component production, from evaluating new manufacturing technologies to problem solving in the design phase, to defining inspection and repair procedures for in-service components. I will be undertaking a Master’s degree supported by the company which will contribute towards my chartered status which Leonardo Helicopters is also supporting. I was slightly concerned about moving from a large city, but I quickly settled in. There are plenty of social groups to get involved with both in and out of work and filling my spare time with social activities has not been a problem.

ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

Specialising in Customer Support and Training Michael Gulliver

Customer Support Management

Material Services Technical team supporting the main rotor strip and build facility operated in Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, Cornwall.

6 Months

I worked for our Danish manager focusing on the support package we provide for the 14 AW101’s. I travelled to Denmark for the maintenance and logistics working groups, focusing on the top technical and material issues faced when running a search and rescue fleet.

3 Months

Project Engineering I answered technical queries from the customers and worked on recorded aircraft data to determine if the life of aircraft parts can be extended.

3 Months

I went to the University of Salford where I studied Aircraft Engineering with Pilot Studies. With an engineering background, I saw joining Leonardo Helicopters as a challenge - when people talk about customer support, engineering is not normally what comes to mind. I was one of the first engineering graduates and spent the two year programme discovering what Customer Support really means for Leonardo Helicopters and our customers. I currently work in Product Support Engineering, in the AW101 In-Service Support team. Product support is where customer issues are project managed, maintenance programmes are developed and refined, technical documentation is produced and through life product improvements are developed. My technical background means understanding and managing aircraft issues quickly, working with our in country teams, engineering, material, procurement or finance to resolve them - most recently working with engineering and our composites centres of excellence on developing new repairs for the main rotor head. My advice is if you are looking for technically challenging roles that cover all aircraft systems, operations and through-life development then you should look at a role in Customer Support.

BUSINESS PROGRAMME

Specialising in Procurement and Supply Chain Lisa Brydon I joined the two year Graduate scheme as a Business Graduate within Procurement following a few years in industry after completing my degree. I am currently approaching the end of Year One and have so far had three very different placements within the Procurement department. These placements have given me experience in purchasing parts, managing contracts and supplier management. The programme encourages Graduates to take responsibility early on which allows for involvement in activities which have a direct impact on the daily operations of the business. In addition to my Procurement placements, I have had the opportunity to have an external placement elsewhere in the business. I had a brief placement within the External Relations where I was able to develop a different set of skills, meet new people and gain a greater understanding of the business overall. The programme offers lots of extra-curricular opportunities to get stuck into. For example, I am a member of the AWASA committee which encourages collaboration between Trainees and Graduates onsite. AWASA organise social events and charity fundraisers as well as offering fantastic networking opportunities. As I prepare to enter Year Two of the programme, the company is continuing to support my development by sponsoring me through my Level 4 Qualification of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. This will support what I have learnt throughout my first year with the company and will complement the on-the-job training I have already achieved.

14

Indirect Procurement

This role allowed me to get involved in day-to-day tasks in purchasing Ground Support Equipment as well as exposing me to suppliers related to the Apache contracts.

This role got me involved with both suppliers and key stakeholders around the business with the aim of developing process improvements within the department. This gave me opportunities to increase my presence onsite and network as well as making a difference to the department.

BUSINESS PROGRAMME

Specialising in Information & Communication Technology Jack Lam I studied Business Information Systems at Southampton Solent University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in the subject. My first project at Leonardo Helicopters was co-ordinating the set of up an ICT infrastructure in an off-site location. This project allowed me to engage with the business and to document their requirements. I was encouraged to plan and execute the project whilst being given the support and direction from the business when needed. Another project involved the design and refinement of the workflow for a security recall programme. This project has allowed me to develop my skills in resources management and conflict resolution. My next placement put me into the R&D department, working closely with one of the helicopter pilots preparing and conducting electronic flight bag trials. I flew in a helicopter to monitor and observe the trial, which was a good experience, and it allowed me to see the flight operation firsthand. Returning to ICT, I was asked to investigate new mobile management technology. Because my team was in Italy, I had plenty of opportunity to travel there to work with them. Working in an international team has given me the cultural experience and the different perspectives needed to develop and adapt my working style. There are still many aspects of the organisation which I have yet to discover. My overall experience from each of the placements in the company has been very positive and has definitely kept me engaged!

Typical placements include: • • • •

BUSINESS PROGRAMME

Specialising in International Business Management Rachael Malton Prior to joining the scheme I was a student at Reading University, where I studied International Business Management and Administration with French. During my university course I also studied in France for a year and worked at Agusta Aerospace Services in Belgium. During the graduate scheme I have had a varied and tailored range of placements within the International Government Business Unit. These rotations have offered me a fantastic insight into the company, its people and its wider functions. I started working within Bids and Proposals which required me to manage (indirectly) a team of individuals from a range of functions, such as Training, Pricing and Legal, both in the UK and Italy. My objective was to compose competitive bids for a range of aircraft platforms and configurations for several international end-users, with full support from the Bid Management team. These placements have allowed me, not only to utilise and enhance my key skills and attributes, but have also challenged me and provided me with tools to further develop both my business acumen and technical knowledge.

18

Bids and Proposals

Customer Support and Training

This role challenged me from day one and provided me with real responsibility. This placement gave me the opportunity to manage and coordinate a team in a deadline oriented environment. This was a challenge, but it invaluable provided me with invaluable exposure to the core functions of the business and the team within which I was working.

This placement gave me the opportunity to get involved with an area of the industry that I didn’t have any prior experience in. I was tasked with a range of projects, which improved my ability to think responsively and strategically. The degree of autonomy within this role motivated me further.

Customer support was my external placement. My main role in this placement was managing warranty claims for one of our largest SL300 customers, ensuring the customer is appropriately engaged and satisfied at all times. Being able to experience a customer facing role on the scheme has been really useful, and highlights the benefits of the rotations.

For me, the selling point of the graduate scheme is that it is a management development scheme. From the first day of the scheme you are involved in a variety of development workshops which aim to compliment and improve you, your working life and your relationships. These days include sessions focussing on personal brand, peer coaching and DISC personality profiling. Alongside these formal training sessions, there has been plenty of opportunity to develop further through extra-curricular activities. For example, once on the scheme you will be enrolled as a certified STEM ambassador, which allows you to get involved in local school activities such as our Flying Start Challenge to promote STEM subjects. I have been involved in a range of activities, such as giving talks at local schools to promote the company. I have also represented Leonardo at Farnborough Air Show and The Royal Bath and West Show, these opportunities enhance a wide range of soft skills which I have found to be incredibly useful within my placements. The workshops, coupled with regular reviews and the extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities encourage self-development on more than just the surface level, and equip you with the tools to become a well-rounded individual on a successful career path.

19

BUSINESS PROGRAMME

Specialising in Finance Matt Pinnock As an undergraduate at Bournemouth University studying Business Studies, I wanted to find a placement that would give me the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of business functions. I also wanted a placement that would allow me to develop my skills as well as gain industry experience. The undergraduate scheme at Leonardo Helicopters provided all these things. Alongside my placements, I was also involved in the Flying Start Challenge - a project run by graduates from within the aerospace industry and involving working with schools to run engineering challenges. Additionally, I was a committee member of the Leonardo Helicopters Apprentice and Student Association (AWASA), which is a society involving all students and apprentices and organises social and charity events in the local area. It has been a great way to meet new people and gain exposure to additional parts of the business. I would definitely recommend Leonardo Helicopters as a placement company as it allows you to have a flexible placement year giving you real experience and professional development while also being extremely enjoyable.

Business Management This was a really varied place to work with projects including risk and project management and financial analysis. It was rewarding to see that the work I was doing made a real difference.

6 Months 20

Finance This involved putting together pricing information for new contracts and also working closely with our customers. It allowed me to gain an understanding of how the whole business operates and knowledge of other platforms.
