Introduction ExxonMobil’s UK operations form part of the world’s leading petroleum and petrochemical company. We’re also part of a global business that is worth more than a staggering £218 billion by market capitalisation – which means that we’re the second most valuable company in the world. Does that mean that we can offer an incredible array of graduate opportunities? Undoubtedly. Does that mean that we have the wealth of resources to underpin your personal and professional development? Absolutely.

Instead, you’ll be working on live projects, taking on unusual levels of responsibility for a graduate. And you’ll be following a career path that is unique to you – and powered by you. It will be an intense couple of years for certain, but the opportunities that will unfold in our global business will make it extremely worthwhile. So, are you ready to be ExxonMobil? Take a closer look at our business and the schemes we offer...

Exxon Mobil Corporation

Does that mean that graduates become lost in a big, faceless corporate machine? Definitely not.

• World energy leader for over a century

People matter at ExxonMobil. They are ExxonMobil. Their needs and those of the business are inextricably linked. And each and every one of our people plays their part in helping us take on the world’s toughest energy challenges – meeting the needs of a growing population while reducing greenhouse emissions and minimising the impact on the environment.

About ExxonMobil Exxon Mobil Corporation is the world’s leading publicly traded petroleum and natural gas company. The corporation has been a leader in the energy business since the beginnings of the industry itself. Headquartered in Texas, it now has more than 80,000 employees in 77 countries and business interests across the globe. It was created by the merger of Exxon and Mobil in 1999. In the UK, we’re known for our consumer brands, Esso and Mobil. For over a century, customers around the world have come to respect and rely on Esso-branded fuels, services and lubricants for their personal and business needs. Mobil is recognised in the UK for its advanced technology in lubricants and, renowned for its performance and innovation, is marketed globally. In addition, many of our businesses – such as Aviation, Chemicals, Marine, Basestocks and Specialties – market their products under the ExxonMobil brand.

energy from natural gas and coal to nuclear and renewables. But whatever the source, we will need technology to help us use it as efficiently and cleanly as possible.

An ca Yo en ov

That’s why we continue to invest billions every year in new energy development and technologies. In 2010, we invested over £334m in our UK upstream, downstream and chemical operations. In fact, since our first exploration activities in 1964, we have invested over £32.2 billion at today’s prices in the UK’s offshore oil and gas industry. But not only are we investing in the global energy industry and the UK economy, we are investing heavily in new talent. Talented people like you.

Behind these well-known consumer brands lies an outstanding record as a technological innovator and a major investor in the future of energy. Powering our homes and businesses will take more than just oil. We’ll need to tap into every practical source of

Graduate Opportunties Any big company can offer you a career. We’re offering more than that. Your contribution will matter to the energy industry and communities all over the world. So you’ll matter to us. Whether your strengths lie on the technical or commercial sides of our business, every day will be intellectually challenging. Responsibility will be immediate, with job rotations giving you the opportunity to test and develop your skills, and constantly add to your knowledge base. We’ll encourage you to take the initiative. You’ll be empowered to think independently and expected to articulate your ideas. You’ll be given every chance to perform as an individual, but you won’t be alone. ExxonMobil offers a truly integrated workplace. Everyone knows their own jobs, but we achieve more when we work together. We pride ourselves on our strong leadership and supportive culture. A range of training and development programmes will be provided to equip you with the skills to become one of our future leaders. You’ll have a buddy

for guidance as you find your feet, and you’ll constantly find yourself learning from experts in their fields. At the end of your two-year graduate scheme, a whole host of options will become available. Just because you join us in one area doesn’t mean you can’t make the transition to another part of the business. For instance, engineers aren’t pigeon-holed into engineering roles – many have embarked on successful careers in business functions. And since we have operations in 77 countries, the prospects for international projects are outstanding. So, are you a well-rounded individual who can combine academic achievement with plenty of interests outside the classroom? Do you embrace a new challenge and then look for the next one? Are you enthused and inspired by the thought of working in the energy industry? Do you love coming up with new ideas and sharing them with others? Then become ExxonMobil – our present and our long-term future.

Graduate opportunities at ExxonMobil in the UK & Ireland 10

As a graduate engineer, you’ll be joining a highly focused and highly skilled team. A network of mentors and experienced engineers will ensure that you settle smoothly and quickly into your job, giving you support and advice when required. Engineers are the backbone of our manufacturing process, and you’ll be involved in decision-making from the start, as you take on a constant flow of challenges that are as satisfying as they are stretching. You could find yourself working on a major capital project to increase unit capacity or reliability, or implementing new initiatives to improve site safety. Alternatively, you could be providing technical support as part of a team on a unit ensuring on-grade production meets market demand. As you progress, you could become involved in project development and commissioning, plant troubleshooting and operations planning. Since we operate refining and chemical facilities in a large number of countries, there will also be plenty of scope for overseas assignments in either a technical or supervisory role. Great emphasis will be placed on building your technical knowledge and engineering skills – and your ability to apply them in practical situations. Technical and commercial training courses held at locations in Europe,

coupled with on-the-job experience in our fast-paced, hands-on environment, will provide a solid platform for career development. Our training programme is IChemE and IMechE accredited and our aim is to help you achieve Chartered status within four years.

As a graduate, you’ll be part of a multicultural team supporting our global commercial sales business.

“My prime objective is to maintain the profitability of regional airports in France and Germany where we provide aeroplane fuelling services. One of the best things about ExxonMobil is the responsibility given to graduates. When I came on board, I found myself managing the sale of jet fuel to a portfolio of 30 airlines, from dealing with an initial price request to closing the contract. During my time here, I’ve worked in two different roles, travelled to five countries and enjoyed incredible training, challenges and mentorship. My current role has real impact and leads to tangible results – which is why it’s so rewarding.”

“The great part of my job is that it allows me to apply my technical degree to a very commercial role. Before taking on my current job in sales, I had a marketing role that took me right across Europe. It was a lot of responsibility, managing a large budget and a team of marketing agency staff. In my current sales role, I hold a portfolio of nationwide industrial accounts spanning the power generation and oil and gas sectors, companies to whom our lubricant products keep their business going, as well as the partial energy supply to the country. At ExxonMobil, there’s always lots going on across departments and countries – you really do have the opportunity to go into varied roles.”

Being Campus Ambassador helped me secure an Industrial Placement Student role at Fawley refinery – and subsequently a permanent role on the graduate development programme. Campus Ambassador As a major graduate recruiter, we have always looked at innovative ways to forge strong links with student communities. Campus Ambassadors are undergraduates, usually in their third year or higher, who act as a go-between for the ExxonMobil recruitment team and students at their respective universities. Campus Ambassadors are expected to show commitment and effort, but they get a lot back in return. The role involves promoting ExxonMobil across campus. This could mean pitching a presentation for sponsorship, planning and hosting a networking dinner, or organising a team for the ExxonMobil Engineering Challenge (EMEC) – see page 31. We run regular Campus Ambassador Workshops at which we get feedback from Campus Ambassadors on how best to get our name across on campus, and it’s also an opportunity for them to learn from each other. Campus Ambassadors are expected to have direct involvement or strong links with their course student society – for example, in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering. They are adept at organising and building relationships, balancing a fun outlook on life with a serious take on career development.

If your university doesn’t have a Campus Ambassador and you would like to develop a relationship with us, why not put yourself forward? Just visit www.exxonmobil.com/ukrecruitment

We care about people, and our priority will always be to keep ourselves, our co-workers and our families safe. Our people are totally dedicated to their jobs and our business. They’re highly driven. They embrace responsibility. They’re prepared to
