YEARS OF R+T LEADING WORLD TRADE FAIR FOR ROLLER SHUTTERS, DOORS/GATES AND SUN PROTECTION SYSTEMS

”R+T was, as usual, a successful trade fair for us and it is simply a matter of course to be there.“

”It‘s almost half a year since the successful R+T 2012 and the follow-up trade fair business has been very successful! For the Hunter Douglas Corporate Group the trade fair gave us momentum, for Germany, all of Europe, and indeed for the entire world!“

Jürgen Eckhardt, Area Sales Manager, Nice S.p.A., Italy

Friedrich W. Petrat, Managing Director, Hunter Douglas Components, Kassel, subsidiary of Hunter Douglas GmbH

”R+T is the most important platform for new products, here we meet our customers as well as acquire new customers, predominantly from abroad.“

”Approximately 60 percent of our products are exported, 40 percent remain within the country. The mix of visitors at our trade fair stand also reflected this. The quality of the visitors was very high, there were many decision-makers there.“

Exhibitor opinions I 03

Ulrich Kromer von Baerle Management Representative, Landesmesse Stuttgart GmbH

R+T 2012 was a huge success. Never before were there as many exhibitors, visitors and innovations. The media response and the interest from visitors were greater this year than at previous events. And R+T has enhanced its international character! The visitors travelled from, believe it or believe it not, 125 countries to Stuttgart; in 2009 this figure was only 106. What could better highlight the status of a leading world trade fair than this figure? The international exhibitors made up 66 percent of the show: Overall 538 of the 816 exhibitors travelled from outside of Germany, from a total of 39 countries. The fact that R+T is a trade fair of innovations probably does not need to be mentioned. Because it simulates the innovation pace of the industry, new products are developed for R+T and presented to the global audience at R+T. This has been impressively shown by approximately 100 submissions made for the R+T 2012 Innovation Prize. But Stuttgart is not just where contacts are established and innovations are presented, real business is also generated here. An extremely high desire to invest was registered by exhibitors and the Messe Stuttgart survey revealed that 16 percent of visitors want to invest more than 100,000 Euro. This is massive - and an indicator of the high quality of visitors at R+T, in fact 45 percent, nearly every second visitor, were decision makers or decision influencers. In this anniversary brochure first of all we want to once again review the wonderful R+T 2012 and build on the success - and then look back on the initial years of a quite unique success story. I hope you enjoy reading this brochure and I am already looking forward to welcoming you back again in Stuttgart in 2015.

Impressions of R+T 2012 I 05

But R+T was impressive not only on account of its sheer size. Once again the trade fair also showed that it is right at the forefront of developments. The energy efficiency theme which is on the political agenda worldwide was present everywhere and aroused enormous interest among more than 58,000 visitors. A specialist for drive and control technology showed how awnings can be operated using solar energy, powered with a battery and then controlled remotely. The cost and effort for installation of the device are minimal as power lines are not required for this type of operation. Or energy management in buildings: With a combination of all systems the largest possible savings potential is achieved, the entire system can be operated via a smartphone – also when out and about.

2012 Sometimes one almost had the impression that the exhibitors and visitors wanted to outperform one another in their songs of praise at R+T 2012. There was talk of a massive success, a wonderful ambience and a highly qualified audience.

The interest of exhibitors in innovations that are constantly moving with the times is definitely one of the key success factors of R+T and a reason why it has continued to thrive since its first ever event. Even during turbulent and uncertain times and when the global problems are becoming more complex: R+T, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2015, appears well-equipped for the requirements of the future, just as it has demonstrated over the past 50 years by constantly moving with the times.

Virtually everyone claimed it was the best R+T ever – once again. Similar claims were also heard for example at the events in 1991, 2000 and 2009. But if one looks solely at the figures, then one can actually talk about a record result: neither the exhibitor nor visitor figures, nor the occupied area nor the international character, were ever so high as in 2012. A comparison of the key figures for R+T 2012 to previous trade fairs:

1965 – 1971 The first international roller shutter trade fair celebrated its première as ”R 65“ from 20 – 23 May 1965 at the trade fair grounds on Killesberg in Stuttgart. And the first ever event already ”exceeded all expectations“. According to surveys conducted by the Association for German Manufacturers of Roller Shutters and Stuttgarter AusstellungsGmbH, which was what Landesmesse Stuttgart was then called, ”the opinions of the exhibiting industry varied between very good and excellent“, which is what can be read in the final report of R 65.

117 exhibitors from eight countries, as well as 25 to 40 percent of visitors coming from outside of Germany (reference is made here to the statements from the exhibiting companies), provided the first indication of the huge, and also international, potential of this trade fair. And the fact that the assurance given ”by all companies surveyed to come back again to the next international roller shutter trade fair“ was truly fulfilled with impressive development: At R 65 only one hall was filled, but two years later it was four halls and at R 69 five. By 1971 the number of exhibitors had almost doubled to 222. The 12,000 visitors came from 31 countries and five continents. The intention from the beginning was to do things slowly and in gradual stages (see also box on the right). One preferred to highlight the advantages ”of a pure specialist trade fair as opposed to a general trade fair“: namely the greater manageability, the option of clear performance comparisons, the informative conversations and the exchange of experiences. Personal relationships, which could be established here, according to Heinz Rosskamp, President of the Federal Association for Manufacturers of Roller Shutters at the time, and forged for the long term.

1982 – 1988 The 1980s were the boom years for R+T, a period of unbelievable rapid development. 30 percent increase in the number of visitors from one event to the next meant almost double the number of visitors in just six years. In 1982 there were 17,000 visitors, and then the event organisers counted just under 30,000 people at R 88 – and with a consistent high quality of visitors, which the exhibitors praised unanimously. One of the main reasons was certainly the change from holding the event every two years (up until 1979) to every three years (from 1982). This measure was apparently more in line with the pace of innovation in the industry. More and more new products were showcased at R and the trade fair developed into an important driving force for the industry. And its international character constantly increased: 40 percent of the visitors and 46 percent of the 500 exhibitors came from outside Germany in 1988. A well-known French exhibitor noticed that his global customer base ”was at least 85 percent at this year‘s roller shutter trade fair“. And also the fact that the Federal Economics Minister Dr. Martin Bangemann made the opening speech, highlighted the increasing international significance ”of this global and unique trade fair“. It thus became clearer that R was not just an industry barometer, but more a source of inspiration and pulse generator for the global market.

Also interesting: At R 85 for the first time a growing interest among architects, construction engineers and interior designers was registered - both with regard to technical details and designs.

There are many reasons for the success What were the main reasons for R+T developing into such a huge event? We spoke with Dr. Walter Gehring, who was Managing Director of Messe Stuttgart for 21 years and played a key role in the success of R+T in the 1980s and 1990s. Dr. Gehring: „At the start R+T was in fact a relatively moderate, lowkey trade fair. It was not really expected that it would become such a hot topic. The main reasons for the success were, in my opinion, the top quality of the stands and the many innovations which the market leaders presented at R+T. We ourselves often walked about the trade fair with open mouths and marvelled at the complete façades which were constructed. The three-year rotation was also extremely important because this corresponds to the pace of innovation in the industry and as a result allowed all important companies from all over the world to showcase their innovations at R+T. It also ensured that the share of foreign visitors was always in excess of 50 percent. At R+T many personal relationships developed and therefore the association with the trade fair continued to remain extremely high. Personally I connect many fond memories of a superb trade fair and good friends to R+T.“

The golden 1980s I 11

1991 1991 was a milestone for R. In fact it still did not have a T in its name this year, but it was the first time the roller shutter trade fair was enhanced with a special area – doors/gates and door/gate accessories. The slightly awkward official title ”R 91 with T 91“ did not change the fact that the exhibitors from the area of doors and gates, without exception, were satisfied with the trade fair success. And BVT, the National Federation of Door/Gate Manufacturers and Suppliers for the Door/Gate Industry, as a new co-sponsor of the trade fair, emphasised that there was no alternative to this successfully developed trade fair concept in Stuttgart. According to Rolf Machill, who at this time was the Deputy Chairperson of the association, ”growing importance will certainly be attached to the ”T“ at future R-with-T trade fairs“. He turned out to be right.

Another new feature: For the first time the R+T design award was presented. With this new design component, various creative design solutions, new materials and interior designers were also addressed. The fact that at this time things were still not fully developed in terms of design is highlighted in a speech from the manager of Designcenter Stuttgart, Peter Frank, who had a decisive input into the development of the design award and ”referred to the still underdeveloped application of modern industry designs in roller shutters, sun protection and doors/gates“.

R 91 was also an event steeped in history, namely the first “all-German trade fair“ with exhibitors and visitors from the new federal states.

2000 – 2006 In 2000 for the first time R+T managed to hit the 50,000 mark in terms of visitor numbers: 51,300 visitors from 85 countries attended the event, a further increase of six percent. And an incredible 84 percent of exhibitors showcased new products which were developed especially for R+T. It was clear that exhibitors and visitors were once again outperforming themselves in their songs of praise. ”The best R+T we have ever had“, was a frequent opinion shared by many long-term exhibitors, both the international character and the quality of visitors was highlighted. However: At the beginning of the new millennium it was already noticeable that R+T was at its limit. Although more and more companies wanted to exhibit at the leading world trade fair, further growth was not possible. The old trade fair grounds on Killesberg had reached their maximum capacity. Therefore in 2003 and 2006 only minimal growth was registered. And more and more exhibitors appeared dissatisfied, found sharper words to describe the no longer modern venue, some even threatened to move if something was not done soon. R+T in Stuttgart was on the brink of collapse. But then fortunately something happened. On 14 September 2004 the first turf was turned for the new trade fair grounds in the Filder region. Although it was not completed in time for R+T 2006, the view of the modern trade fair grounds already brightened up many exhibiting souls. And then it was 2009 ...

Visitors at R+T 2000: 99 % stated the visit was worthwhile

62 % of visitors stated they spent between two and five days at R+T in Stuttgart

7% i.e. over 3,000 visitors, stayed all five days

2009 Over 100,000 square metres of hall space, perfect infrastructure and, if nothing else, the superb architecture – ultra-modern trade fair grounds: R+T obtained an appropriate framework. 747 exhibitors (an increase of 37.6 percent) and 57,000 visitors were impressed. In addition Wolfgang Cossmann, current President of the Federal Association for Manufacturers of Roller Shutters + Sun Protection, expressed his enthusiasm: ”It was overwhelming. A quantum leap has taken place with the new trade fair grounds. The entire industry with its many interesting innovations is well equipped for the future despite the economic crisis.“ Dr. Claus Schwenzer, BVT – National Federation of Door and Gate Manufacturers, gave the ”first-class event R+T 2009 top marks“. The international character of the visitors was ”sensational“.

Was a further increase possible? Yes. R+T 2012 outshone R+T 2009 – a fact which has already been reported. And we are already looking forward to 2015, when the leading world trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun protection will celebrate its 50-year anniversary.

50 years of R+T A different type of anniversary

2015 And now the anniversary. What objectives can there be for a trade fair which celebrates its 50-year anniversary and knows nothing else but growth and success? More exhibitors? More visitors? A more optimal framework programme? Yes, most definitely all of the above. And we will do everything in our power to once again top the result of 2012. The preparations are in full swing and it is anticipated that every last stand at R+T will once again be booked out. Register as soon as possible to secure a good stand location. The early-booker discount applies until 31 May 2013. We will start the planning in June 2013.

In 1961 Hans-Dieter Schröder joined his father‘s business. He visited R for the first time in 1965. ”At that time it was a calm, laid-back affair“, he remembers, ”there were only a few halls on Killesberg – but interesting nevertheless.“ So interesting that Hans-Dieter Schröder returned again in 1967. And again in 1969, 1971 and 1973. And to every other R+T event, without fail, up until R+T 2012. Hans-Dieter Schröder experienced the entire development: the first R with the T trade fair, the move to the new trade fair grounds, the increasing international character, ”also when that is not important for the normal visitor“, emphasises Schröder. And what was the most impressive experience over the years? ”Maybe this huge stand party for Selve, I think it was on the occasion of their 100th anniversary; Hazy Osterwald played and the food and entertainment were superb. That was really something very special back then“. But Hans-Dieter Schröder also remembers the journeys to the trade fair: ”Departing in the morning at three o‘clock, no matter what the weather was like, so that we could arrive on time.“ The next time, when he comes back again, Hans-Dieter Schröder wants to travel by plane. And book a hotel early, in direct proximity to the trade fair grounds. Mr. Schröder, thank you so much for your incredible loyalty!

We are already looking forward to the anniversary of R+T, which will outshine everything up to now: with an incomparable range of products and services, hands-on high-tech technology and spectacular innovations. You too can look forward to this global industry meeting point with expert visitors from all over the world. Ranging from exciting discussions and dialogues. To an impressive framework programme. And to an anniversary exhibitor evening which you won‘t forget in a hurry – we can already promise you this! Celebrate ”50 years of R+T – 50 years of a global industry meeting point“ with us.

2015 In 2012 for the first time we organised ”The Art of Planning – Forum on Architecture and Integral Planning“ parallel to R+T. The primary objective of the event was to address architects and planners and make them enthusiastic about R+T. We are delighted that this was a success.

With approximately 1,500 participants ”The Art of Planning“ achieved a result which exceeded all expectations. Not only the façade congress ”Smart Interfaçades“ was fully booked out, but the R+T guided architect tours also registered huge demand so that the registration lists had to be closed early. With the combination of design, functionality, energy efficiency and sustainability we understand the requirements of the target group. By 1 March 2012 it was clear: The Art of Planning will become a fixed element of the event programme of Messe Stuttgart and will take place parallel to R+T in 2015. Exhibitors who want to specifically address architects and planners will once again label their trade fair stands with an ”A“. We are also planning on publishing an ”Architecture Guide“ ahead of the event to advertise the guided architect tours at R+T.
