Prep Presentation Wednesday 16 March

We are really excited and looking forward to formally welcoming the Prep students to our school. This will take place next Wednesday 16th March, commencing at 10.00am. All Prep parents will have received an invitation to this exciting event.. The plan is to hold a ‘Welcome to Country’ on the oval at 10.00 and once this is finished, we will all head up to the gym. Parents and guests will be seated and then the rest of the student body will join us around 10.30am. Each of the Prep students will be introduced to the school. Once the formal ceremony is finished, all our guests will be welcome to join us for morning tea.

Reading With Your Child At Home

A number of parents have raised the issue of the Take Home Books and how they should approach the task. The main important point to remember is that the books we send home will always be easier texts than what your child is working on at school.

When your child brings home a book to share, we encourage you to read and enjoy it together. Below is an outline of the process for the students in the Foundation (Prep) and Junior areas but I stress that you can still read to and with your child until they reach the older classes. Why not enjoy reading with them more complex children’s classic stories when they are independent readers? For our parents of younger children here is what we recommend.

Before Reading: o Discuss the front cover, title and chat about the pictures in the book. You may like to ‘predict’ what the book is about! o Adopt the TO, WITH and BY approach. You may read the book to your child and then encourage them to read the book with you. When they feel confident they can read it by themselves. During Reading: o Pause, Prompt and Praise! Allow your child the time to look at the pictures and attempt the words. Prompt your child if they get stuck and praise all efforts!

Birthdays

After Reading: o You might like to encourage them to discuss the pictures, favourite parts, letters and sounds, new words, words they know, rhyming words etc. with your child. At school we will work with them at their instructional level and challenge them with harder texts. Learning to read should always be an enjoyable experience.

We strongly encourage you to continue to read an abundance of great books at home, join the local library and feel free to borrow books from our well-resourced library here at school!

Happy Reading!!!

Farewell Brayden and the Kellams

Sadly for us after 9 years of being a part of MSPS, the Kellam family -Brayden (6L), Tyalla (Class of 2014), Vanessa and Ron are off to San Francisco where Ron’s company has placed him. They will be there for at least 3 years or more and so this is it for our time with this beautiful family. Vanessa used to take our Religious Education classes in my first few years at the school and Ron was for a time our ‘go to ‘ person if we wanted some hard to fix things done.

One of my most special moments as a Principal was going to Parliament House with Tyalla when she won the award for the best design for the AFL Multicultural round. Her design was used in the Footy Record on the day and she was honoured in a special ceremony with the Education Minister. Brayden is a well-loved and popular student at MSPS and this is evidenced by the presentation organised by his mates, in particular Josh Weddle and Seb FrancisPerkins. They presented him with a photo frame of many photographic memories over the years and it was put together by Tania Weddle. They (and us) will miss him greatly but we are hoping that with email and Skype we can keep in touch.

Library

As much as we are truly grateful, we are a little full in the library with regards to second hand books. In fact, Clare cannot keep up with the cataloguing of the donations, so much comes in daily. So Clare has asked could we hold off on the donations this year until we are able to process all the second hand books we already have as well as the new ones. Many Thanks

Easter Bonnet Parade

Our annual Easter Bonnet Parade will again be held on the last day of the term commencing at 1pm. The Parade is only for students in Years Prep to Year 2 and is organised by our student leaders. Each class takes a turn to parade in the hall in front of the audience and are judged for the ‘Best Hat’ or the ‘Most Colourful Design’ or whatever the category the student leaders decide on before the day. We also invite the students from Panorama Kindergarten to participate as well. At the end of the Parade, the rest of the student population join us and our Parents and Friends group draw out the Easter Raffle winners. The Prep children will then return to their rooms to collect their bags before being dismissed. The older children will be dismissed from the hall depending on the time. Please note hats are made at home not in class.

LOST-Canteen Aprons

Two of Lisa Barry’s aprons have gone missing from last year. They are two denim aprons which had just been purchased. If anyone has seen them or taken them home to wash can you please let us know? Lisa is very keen to have them returned.

MSPS Achievers Congratulations and thanks to our singers, Cailey Noons, Rebecca Brancaleone and Amy Baldwin (6L) for their beautiful voices this week. It is always a pleasure to have our senior students leading the school.

Well done on the wonderful effort to Jordan Zaga (6W) and Matt Tutera (6C) for raising $165.85 as part of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign. The boys sold icy poles on Tuesday after school and did very well, serving the long queues. Thank you to all in our community for supporting them. Congratulations and good luck to Alex Cole (6L) who has gone through to the next round in the VSSP Cricket Trials.

Finally, congratulations to Jarrod Tyzack (Class 2012) pictured on the right, who represented Viewbank College at a recent Melbourne University Code Masters competition. The competition was held through the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Teams of two to three students competed against other teams from all round Australia to solve complex computing problems by applying advanced mathematics and computing algorithms. The students were not permitted to access the internet for reference. Jarrod and his partner from Viewbank, placed 1st in the senior division of the on-campus competition which was a wonderful achievement. Fantastic effort Jarrod and we are so proud of your achievement.

Wishing you all a relaxing and safe long weekend and I look forward to seeing you all next week at our Reporting Conferences.

YEAR 2 Classroom Clippings -

Year 2 clubs are underway and we are absolutely loving it! If you’re not aware, Clubs involves the students participating in different activities once a week with students from different grades. This year we have girl and boy groups. The activities to start with are sport, cooking, art, science and yoga/meditation. As you can see, a great range of activities. This week we thought we would share with you the activity run by magic Monique who is taking the meditation/ yoga class. The students explored the themes from the book The Stone Lion by Margaret Wild. After enjoying the book they discussed and evaluated just what they are grateful for in their own lives. Here are some thoughts the students expressed:  I am grateful that I can move my body. Henry 2T  I am grateful for learning in a good school. Liam 2R  I am grateful for a warm and safe home. Oliver 2C  I am grateful for being alive and having a home and a family. Mani 2J Feel free to come and have a look at our gratitude tree in the Year 2 area.

YEAR 4 Classroom Clippings

This week in year 4 we have been working on our maths projects. We are doing lots of different things. Some of us are building a marble run, designing a restaurant or investigating the tallest buildings in the world. We are all enjoying it because it is new to us and we are all doing something that interests us. This week Lyn came to 4C and 4R and showed us the great maths activity centres which were heaps of fun!

In our unit we are starting to do some research in groups. The groups are Aboriginals, Migrants, Refugees, Disabilities and Poor People.

This week we have also started our spelling groups with Tom, Mandy and Eliza. We have been brushing up on our codes and making sure we use them in our writing too!

Senior School Classroom Clippings

This week the grade 5/6's have been working on Captain Cook, fun fact: did you know that the voyage was a secret mission. The grade six school photos have been postponed and we do not have a date. Inter school sport and Intra School sport has been great so far. Unfortunately we are losing one of our magnificent grade six boys, Brayden Kellam who is going to San Francisco for 2-4 years so we wish him the best of luck in the United States. Also congratulations to the school swimming team for competing really well in the regionals swimming competition on Wednesday the 9th of March. The boys relay team (with Josh W, Josh A, Cooper and Noah) came 2nd which means they just miss out on making it to the next round, but anyway they all did really well! Congratulations to Alex Cole for competing in the school district cricket team. As you may have noticed a few people in grade 5/6 have been doing the World’s Greatest Shave, which is for leukaemia disease to see what it is like to have no hair, but most of the students have been dyeing their hair! Thanks for Reading, Written by Nicholas Makridis, Luke Leaper and Sam Knight

This week in the garden As we continue to explore soil through the looking glass, this fortnight we're learning about crop rotation- the method of preventing the spread of diseases or pests which may attack vegetables belonging to the same group or family. The students are applying their knowledge by planning what to plant next for next season's menu.

Uniform Year 6 Polo Update

RHS Sports and Montmorency South Primary School would like to apologize for the delay in some families not yet receiving their Year 6 blue polo tops. There was a misunderstanding last year as to who would do the ordering, which caused the polos to be ordered and made much later then hoped for. The time frame from the ordering, making and delivery of the polos to our school is 6-8 weeks. There are more on order and we will get them out to families as soon as they arrive. We appreciate your understanding and patience in this matter.
