December December 20082012

From the President’s desk... Holidays shopping season is upon us and how you shop can make a huge difference in the local economy and also what is available locally. Many of you know that I am a librarian, and as such I read a lot of library books. That means that I don’t buy a lot of books. However, when there is a book that I want to buy, I go to a locally owned bookstore and order it. I do not go to chain bookstores if I can help it. When I go out to eat, I try to avoid national chains and eat at locally owned restaurants. I do my grocery shopping at locally owned groceries such as Bashas’ and Sprouts. (Did you know that Sprouts is headquartered in Phoenix?) Why do I go out of my way to shop locally? Because it makes a difference! When you buy from a local shop, you not only support that shop and its employees, but other local businesses and your neighbors. You support police, fire, parks and libraries through the local taxes. A national study shows that at least 65% of the money spent in a local store stays in the local economy. When you shop a chain store, only 33% of the revenue is reinvested in the community. With both local and chain businesses, the employees get paid and spend money in town. The difference is that local businesses tend to support local advertising companies, local office supply companies, local accountants, local charities, local farmers, etc. I have heard people say they buy supplies at Costco because they are so cheap, but when they want donations for their child’s Little League team, they go to Bashas’ to ask. Why? Because Bashas’ supports the community and gladly donates to churches, schools and non-profit organizations! Why are they not supporting Bashas’ with their weekly shopping? What does this have to do with weaving and spinning? We have locally owned businesses that cater to our needs. Please, support these businesses. You will find books, yarns, fibers, tools, helpful advice and classes at these stores. They gladly special order what they don’t have in stock and they support the local guilds. Fiber Factory donates hundreds of dollars to our guild each year based on how much our members spend at their shop. Look for the ads of other businesses throughout the MOA. If the people of an average American community were to shift just 10% of their spending from chains to local businesses it would bring an additional $235 million a year to the community’s economy. Think local. Buy local. For a searchable database on many locally owned businesses, check out http://localfirstaz.com . Beki Welsch ADWSG President

ing and unique designs, designs we can call our own. Fully utilizing available weave design software is one solution. Participants create their own designs using such techniques as snowflake twills; network drafting; parallel and interleaved threadings; double weaves; taqueté, polychrome taqueté; turned taqueté; and tied weaves. Time permitting designing with graphics software is also introduced. Though many drafts will be for 8 shafts, a good number will be for 4 shafts. Participants should have a basic knowledge of weaving terminology and be familiar with their own computers. Either Windows or Mac systems can be used. The weave design software is available in a demo version at no charge.”

The dates for Jannie Taylor’s Shadow Weave Class - have been changed to March 21-23. We already have 12 signed up and can take up to 20. A $50 deposit holds your place. Either give it to Collyer at the guild meeting on 12/1 or send it to Virginia Glenn, 15819 W. Avalon Dr. Goodyear 85395. Final cost estimated between $120-200/person - depending on numbers and cost of her airfair. Workship with Marg Coe When I sent around the sheet to see which days people preferred for Marg Coe’s class, no one would commit. So, I met with Marg and we’ve set a date for her workshop - Feb. 22-24, 2013. Location TBA - hopefully at Northtown Center. Here’s some info (and an intriguing design to whet your interest) from Marg about the class. $50 deposit holds your spot in this class too. Estimated final cost between $95-195. “Weavers are often challenged to come up with interest-

Photorealististic Hand Embroidered Portraits by Cayce Zavaglia

Navajo Weaver’s Marketplace .

Saturday, December 1, 2012 10 AM to 4 PM

From sheep to finished rug, Navajo weaving is steeped in tradition. Join more than 60 weavers as they display and sell their creations and demonstrate the dyeing, carding, spinning and weaving processes that combine with inspiration to create woven masterpieces. Enjoy lectures on collecting, book signings, films and more.

We’ve already seen some pencil or BIC ballpoint pen drawings that would be almost as accurate as photographs – but how about sewing some photo-realistic portraits..? St. Louis-based Cayce Zavaglia shows that it’s possible, although still considers herself more of a painter. Despite her medium being wool, Cayce says she borrows a great deal of technique from drawing and painting for her hand-embroidered creations.

Former Navajo Nation Tribal Chairman Peterson Zah (below) will discuss his new book, written with Peter Iverson and published by the University of Arizona Press, We Will Secure Our Future: Empowering the Navajo Nation, as well as sign copies, at a 2 p.m. event the same day in the Heard’s Steele Auditorium. Mr. Zah’s appearance is sponsored by the Office of the President of Arizona State University and the Heard Museum. Free and open to the public.

Transition from paint to threads, however, proved to be challenging at first, as Cayce could no longer mix colors by hand and had to figure out new ways to give depth to her paintings. For a base she uses a picture, picked out of some 100-150 shots and then transferred onto the canvas. The final portraits, made on the Belgian linen, turn out to be up to 8 x 10.
