Contents THIS WEEK IN PNAS Cover image: Pictured are circular nanorings arranged in a porous smectic phase. Carlos Avendaño et al. demonstrated the self-assembly of highly symmetric nanorings with large internal cavities into liquid-crystalline smectic phases, in which the rings form well-defined layers, and showed that the resulting phases can have free volumes significantly larger than smectic phases formed by rod-shaped or disc-shaped particles. The resulting structures are good candidates for adsorption and storage materials. See the article by Avendaño et al. on pages 9699–9703. Image courtesy of Ella Marushchenko (Ella Maru Studio, Inc.).
