Contents THIS WEEK IN PNAS Cover image: Pictured are circular nanorings arranged in a porous smectic phase. Carlos Avendaño et al. demonstrated the self-assembly of highly symmetric nanorings with large internal cavities into liquid-crystalline smectic phases, in which the rings form well-defined layers, and showed that the resulting phases can have free volumes significantly larger than smectic phases formed by rod-shaped or disc-shaped particles. The resulting structures are good candidates for adsorption and storage materials. See the article by Avendaño et al. on pages 9699–9703.
