Editor’s Note

A s the saying goes, the only thing constant in life is change. And the start of a new year is often when this notion hits home the hardest. Time to change the calendars; time to chuck out last year’s planner and start a new one; time to kick old habits and get off on a different foot. Instead of approaching it all with dread and resistance, embrace it. Think of all the possibilities thrown up, the chance to break from the mundane and the unexpected doors that may open. It’s exciting, invigorating – not to mention a hell lot of fun. So to inspire and egg you on into shaking up your routine, we’ve put together a ginormous section of new experiences worth checking out and people to watch. Inside, you’d find beauty tips on ways to refresh your do, as inspired by the latest catwalk trends; fun exercises that take you away from the monotony of the treadmill; recently-opened restaurants and drinking holes that offer something different; and the new superheroes of health food which are actually easy to get hold of. We also highlight the latest crop of Hollywood up-and-comers who are poised to hit the big time and some new fashion trendmakers to take note of. The early part of the year is also when much festive binging takes place – followed by regret later when we step on the weighing scale. Instead of falling back on your annual post-feasting crash diet, follow the tips in our feature on how to eat smart at parties and still enjoy yourself. And for those who have marked out a certain February day on their calendar with a big red heart, check out the fragrance feature on how to smell good from head to toe. Cheers to the year ahead.

COLOUR CHAMELEON Maybelline is making a serious case for being the go-to brand for the latest trend colours with the launch of Color Show – a mega collection of 40 (yes, you read that right) nail polishes in showstopping shades and nine pop-bright eyeliners. The huge palette of Nail Lacquers ($6.90 each) throws up endless options, ensuring there’s a hue for every outfit or occasion. The Crayon Khol eyeliners ($8.90 each) pack a strong punch too with their ultra-saturated colours. These creamy pencils glide on smoothly and stay put through the day. With their pocket-friendly prices, playing with colour has never been easier.

Oily and blemish-prone skin can now take care of its hydration, oil-control, repair and concealing needs with just one product. Garnier’s Miracle Skin Perfector Gel ($15.90) takes away the hassle and uncomfortable stickiness of layering on multiple skincare and has a BB finish to help cover redness and acne scars. Its Unique Moisturizing Complex promises to hydrate for up to 24 hours, while antibacterial salicylic acid curbs blemishes and keeps skin matte. Pure Lemon Essence delivers brightening and scar-fading benefits. No need to worry about clogged pores either, as mineral pigments are used to provide colour coverage.

White about now

We know realistically it takes time and consistent use for whitening products to work, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting results pronto. Enter Vaseline’s new Healthy White Instant Fair body lotion, which promises up to four times visibly fairer skin upon application. The trick? Illuminating minerals that diffuse and reflect light. With prolonged use, whitening actives such as vitamin B3 bring about more lasting and in-depth effects, while a triple sunscreen ingredient guards against future damage. $7.95 for 200ml, $11.80 for 350ml

LOCK I T IN

According to Sunsilk Research & Development, about 80 per cent of hair fall comes from the roots. “Healthy hair needs a healthy scalp; most girls don’t realise how delicate the scalp is, it’s really an extension of the skin on your face,” says New York dermatologist Dr Francesca Fusco. “Many of us take a strong, healthy mane for granted, until we notice our hair thinning. But with the right tools and techniques, we can dramatically boost our hair and scalp health,” she says. That is why she has teamed up with Sunsilk to create the latest Sunsilk Hair Fall Solution range to address hair loss at the roots – literally. Boasting a Root Lock Mineral Complex, the shampoo, conditioner and tonic promise to reduce hair fall by up to 10 times. Anti-dandruff botanical extracts restore hair growth and slow hair loss. $6.70-$12.90

1

Pamper your hair like your face by treating it to a nourishing mask once a week.

2

Give your scalp a scrub using the pads of your fingers. Avoid anything that could lead to scratches.

3

Alternate the use of warm and cool water on your scalp to boost circulation and prevent dead cells from building up.

4

Add a tablespoon of sugar to your shampoo to gently exfoliate dead skin flakes from your scalp.

5

Take biotin supplements daily to improve cell and scalp renewal.

The BB cream has evolved. The new initials to look out for now are ‘CC’, which usually stands for ‘colour correcting’. The difference between them? The CC cream generally has stronger skincare properties and a more natural finish, but less makeup coverage compared to the BB cream. Think of it as a souped up tinted moisturiser. One of the latest examples is Revlon’s Absolute Radiance+ CC Cream ($25.90). A complete care product that hydrates, refines pores and whitens, it’s said to improve skin quality in as little as seven days. Lightweight, comfortable and with the finish of a sheer foundation, it helps you achieve smooth, bright and even-toned complexion in just one step. Oh, did we mention it has sun protection (SPF30/PA++) too?

A new botanical haircare expert has hit town. French brand Keranove has been sold in pharmacies and salons since 1966 and is the second most known home colour brand in France. There are shampoos, conditioners, masks and treatment products for different needs, from damage repair and colour protection to dandruff. All products boast the star ingredient, Dermo-Keratyl – a complex rich in trace elements to help revitalise hair and scalp. Those after gentle DIY colour can look to Keranove’s Oleo Color dyes, which are ammonia-, paraben- and odour-free. $19.90-$39.90 for haircare, $24.90 for Oleo Color.

Keep it up

It’s not easy getting lashes to stay curled in this humidity. But help is on hand with K-Palette’s new 1 Day Keep Style Keep Base ($26.90), a mascara base that promises to keep lashes lifted all day like they’ve been permed. Containing three kinds of fibres to hold the curl and a shape-memory polymer that’s resistant to water, sweat and sebum, this base will prevent lashes from drooping by midday. Beauty ingredients such as panthenol and hydrolysed silk help protect and strengthen. To put the finishing touch on the wide-eyed look, try K-Palette’s Real Lasting Eyeliner 24h WP Micro ($21.90), an ultra-fine liquid liner with a pen tip that measures just 0.05mm. Available in February.

MANE REVIVAL We have spa sessions to pamper the body and facials to perk up tired skin. But our crowning glory often gets overlooked, even though it’s subjected to chemicals, high heat, pollutants and stress. That is why celebrity hairstylist Marc Anthony has come up with his Repairing Macadamia Oil shampoo, conditioner and treatment oil ($17.90-$18.90). The products draw on the nourishing properties of macadamia oil to deliver deep hydration, restoring softness, shine and movement. Bamboo extract fortifies and smoothens tresses by retaining moisture and filling the roughened cuticles of damaged strands. The lightweight shampoo is colour-safe and suitable for all hair types, while the non-greasy treatment oil can be used for heat protection during styling, or as a finishing spray for extra shine and hydration. Available in February.

One is the top makeup remover brand in Japan. The other, a kawaii Japanese icon loved by kids and adults alike. Put them together and what do you get? The limited edition Biore X My Melody Makeup Cleansing Oil (150ml, $17.90). Both a face and eye makeup remover, this cleansing oil dissolves stubborn makeup such as waterproof mascara while removing dirt and impurities. Gentle and suitable for all skin types, it maintains moisture without leaving a greasy film. This oil does not emulsify upon contact with water, so simply massage over face and rinse off. Available from December 2013 to February 2014.

You can now treat acne, wrinkles or dull skin with fuss-free light therapy in the comfort of your home. Hee offers three compact, hand-held LED light devices to tackle different skin concerns. Each device emits a specific wavelength of natural light, using the light’s properties to deliver benefits such as reducing inflammation and promoting collagen growth. Suitable for all skin types, the devices have been clinically tested and found to cause no side effects or irritation. Simply press a button to turn on the device, hold it between five to 10mm from skin then sit back and relax – it will automatically switch off once the treatment is done in a minute or two. Results vary according to individual skin condition and severity of the problem, but you can generally expect to see improvements within a few weeks of consistent use.

BAG IT The Beauty Items Our Bloggers Never Travel Without.

Elaine Woo

Moonberry

I always have sunscreen in my travel kit! I apply it religiously every day, especially if I’m on a beach holiday! UV rays are so damaging and you can be exposed to them even when you are indoors. That’s why I make sure I have sunscreen on hand as I can’t live without it – it is more important to me than makeup!

I always have Stella McCartney’s Stella Eau de Parfum roll-on in my travel beauty kit because one’s got to remember to smell good while on-the-go. This fragrance is sophisticated, floral and uplifting, which cheers me up further whenever I arrive at my travel destination.

Sarah

Holly Jean

I cannot do without a hand sanitiser like the one from Dettol. It’s extremely convenient to sanitise your hands on the spot rather than having to go and find a restroom. I also need a good makeup remover. My trusty Nars Purifying Foam Cleanser ensures my skin is free from all impurities, including waterproof makeup and any other dirt or oil that I might have been exposed to while visiting sites or shopping along the streets! Another must would be my flat iron. I’m very particular about my hair and like to flat-iron it on alternate days. I use the Amika Hair Styler from Sephora.

In my travel kit, I cannot do without my Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Milk. In fact, if I ever went anywhere without it, I think I would have a mini panic attack. I have dry and sensitive skin and this has been one of the best moisturisers for it. I just slap it on and my skin is supple the whole day. It never causes irritation, only soothes it. I’ve tried some high-end brands whose products were either too thick and caused break outs, or not emollient enough and left my skin tight and flaky. I prefer this product over anything else available.

Kasthuri I haven’t travelled in a while but I’ve developed a skincare and beauty regime that I adhere to. Here are the products that I definitely won’t leave home without! 1 Toner, my favourite of which is Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion which keeps both acne and the oilies at bay.

Clara My beauty travel kit must have a handy eyelash curler. Like they always say, the eyes are the windows to the soul. Just curling my lashes instantly perks up my entire look even without makeup, helping me to start the day looking fresh.

2 Sunblock. With my deeper skin tone, it is imperative that they don’t leave the muchdreaded white cast. I love MAC Prep+Prime Face Protect SPF50 and Olay White Radiance Ultra UV Blocker SPF 50/PA+++. 3 Liquid eyeliner. One of my favourites is Dollywink Liquid Eyeliner in Deep Black. 4 Lip balm. The ones that work the best for me are Jack Black Intense Therapy Lipbalm and Badger Baby Balm. 5 Concealer. The newly-launched MAC Pro Conceal and Correct Palette is my daily staple as it allows me to custom-blend a shade I need. 6 Makeup primer. I love Smashbox Hydrating Primer. The gel formula spreads easily and is absorbed in a flash, leaving skin soft and supple. 7 Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. It lasts the whole day, takes me from day to night and is the everyday luxury I’m completely obsessed about.

Chantana

Karen Ashley

I don’t change my skincare or try new ones when I’m travelling. Instead, I stick to those that my skin has no problems with and are hydration-focused. As for makeup, I keep it simple with even skin, curled lashes and a nice pop of colour on cheeks or lips.

I have a pre-packed cabin-friendly beauty kit that is ready for any sudden travel. Firstly, I have mini versions of a basic facial wash, toner and moisturiser. Next, I have my Jane Iredale powder sunscreen because sun protection is the secret to defying age. I would usually use a sheet mask on-board long flights to counter the dry cabin air and a facial spritz to freshen up my tired face when I arrive. Another must-have item is my Lucas’ Paw Paw ointment (another incredible overseas beauty find) that works miracles for chapped lips. It is so multi-purpose that it can also heal minor cuts, burns, insect bites, grazes and abrasions, as well as sunburn, heat rash, gravel rash and chafing. In the case of limited luggage space, I even use it to neaten my eyebrows.

So in my travel kit, I must have a moisturiser (Belif Moisturizing Bomb!), a cleanser (Atorrege AD+ is good for soothing and preventing inflammation), makeup remover (Senka Perfect Oil), eyelash curler, mascara (Za Killer Volume or Kiss Me Lengthening and Curl mascara are foolproofs), Loreal Lucent Magique foundation, sunblock, blush, Roc Enydrial Lip Balm, hand cream and hand sanitiser.

Beauty Resolutions T O

K E E P

PHOTO ON LEFT ISTOCKPHOTO MODEL PHOTOS SHOWBIT.COM

Don’t make a thousand pretty promises to yourself that you’ll struggle to live up to. If you are determined to start this year on a beautiful note, stick to simple beauty resolutions that you are confident of maintaining. From anti-ageing to bodycare, Annie Tan highlights six fundamental beauty rules that every woman should live by.

1

3

Always go to bed with a C L E A N FA C E

Sleeping with makeup on not only clogs pores and causes breakouts, it also deepens wrinkles. During the day, environmental pollutants stick to your makeup, causing oxidative stress and collagen breakdown. So without proper cleansing, skin will be hindered by these impurities and robbed of its vital chance to repair and renew itself naturally at the night while you sleep. As a rule of thumb, if you wear makeup, BB creams or even just sunscreen, make it a habit to double cleanse. Use a makeup remover or cleansing wipe like Nivea Daily Essentials Fragrance Free Facial Cleansing Wipes 25’s ($9.50) before a regular cleanser such as Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser ($15.10). In addition, if you wear waterproof eye makeup or long-lasting lipsticks, invest in targeted makeup removers that are formulated to respect the delicate eye and lip area, such as Simple Eye Makeup Remover 125ml ($12.60). This product gently lifts off waterproof makeup without tugging and rubbing, which can lead to inflammation and fine lines.

Don’t neglect BODY CARE

2

Never skip S U N PROTECTION, ever You already know that UVA and UVB rays contribute to pigmentation, wrinkles and leathery skin. However, did you know that ambient light can also contribute to premature ageing? Always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen like La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF50+ Cream (50ml, $36.90) for UV protection even if you are indoors.

For added protection, fortify your skincare regime with antioxidants such as Pure Beauty Pomegranate Antioxidant Essence (30ml, $23.90) which prevents skin oxidation and cellular damage, or include a supplement such as Heliocare Oral Capsules 60s ($75) which contains a fern extract to fight free radicals and premature ageing.

21

GLOW JAN-MAR ‘14

Crow’s feet are not the only visible signs of ageing – wrinkles from the neck down can also instantly betray your age. The skin around your neck, in particular, is thinner than facial skin and more prone to wrinkles, while your hands are in jeopardy from sun damage and exposure to harsh chemicals such as dishwashing liquids. Always extend facial care such as anti-ageing creams and sunscreens to your neck, and pick a body lotion with in-built sunscreen such as Vaseline Healthy White SPF24 (350ml, $10.80). Also make it a point to slather on an intensive and lightweight moisturising cream such as Human+Kind Hand + Elbow + Foot Cream (50ml, $15) after your shower at night to lock in moisture.

BE AU T Y SUPPLEMENTS Your body needs a myriad of vitamins and minerals for healthy cellular function and repair. Unfortunately, the pace of urban life often makes it difficult to include foods from all major food groups so it may be good to balance your diet with beauty supplements. Collagen production and synthesis also decline rapidly with age, and cause skin to lose its elasticity and firmness. Consider replenishing collagen loss with a supplement such as DHC Collagen Beauty 7000mg 10s ($49.90) which contains fish-derived collagen peptide and vitamin C to slow down the ageing process.

When you sleep, your body and skin go into repair mode – damaged cells are healed and new, healthy ones produced. In other words, quality sleep is a beauty necessity. Beyond clocking seven to eight hours of shuteye, try sleeping and waking up at a fixed time every day. Once your body is accustomed to the routine, you’ll be less likely to suffer from insomnia. When it comes to sleeping habits, avoid lying on your side or front, as this may case wrinkles on your face, and even contribute to back or neck aches. Another quick tip to enhance natural healing at night: invest in a good anti-ageing cream with advanced skin repair actives. Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream ($81) speeds up cellular turnover and boosts collagen production, and Eucerin Omega Soothing Lotion ($29.90) hydrates, calms and repairs red or inflamed skin while you sleep.

You don’t need an expensive spa package to enjoy the benefits of a little ‘me time’. All you need to do is set aside one to two hours weekly for intensive grooming. Slough off dead skin with a gentle facial scrub like Himalaya Walnut Scrub (75ml, $5.90), repair damaged tresses with a hair mask like Phyto Phytojoba Intense Hydrating Mask ($64.80) and slap on a relaxing face mask like Watsons 3-Step Facial Treatment ($19.90) to calm your skin and mind. A regular DIY spa day not only helps you glow from head to toe, it also keeps stress in check. And since stress contributes to premature ageing by depriving your skin of vital nutrients, setting aside time to decompress and indulge in your favourite beauty treats has amazing long-term anti-ageing benefits.

Love Notes Special occasions call for special measures beyond just a casual spritz of your regular perfume. Annie Tan tells you how to smell great from head to toe on a big date.

Perfume

has typically been associated with romance because it is not only intensely personal but also extremely intimate – it envelops you, caresses you and invites that special someone to get up close and into your space. Smelling good instantly leaves a positive impression and puts you in the mood for love, so be sure to set aside some time in your pre-date prep to get properly scented. Believe us, it will be worth it. Here, we tell you six ways how.

Pick a day and night scent When choosing a perfume, always consider the time of the day, venue and nature of the activity. Although there are no hard and fast rules to choosing a day or night scent, it is actually pretty intuitive. During the day, opt for a light floral or citrusy fragrance that is effervescent, refreshing in warm weather and not too overpowering or off-putting if you perspire. Look for crisp notes such as bergamot, mandarin, pear and sweet flowers. Adidas Fruity Rhythm EDT ($9.90), for instance, sparkles with delicious notes of blackcurrant, raspberry and freesia, with base notes of musk. Oriental, spicy and musky scents, however, are better suited for evening wear, as they suggest mystery and seduction. Stronger base notes such as amber, sandalwood, patchouli, musk and spices work well. They’re also less likely to come across as over the top at night when temperatures are cooler. A fragrance like Silkygirl Egyptian Lily EDT ($12.90), with its sexy bouquet of white blossoms, lily and woody musk makes for a highly enticing pick.

Beauty Feature

Wear it on the hot spots A single perfume can smell different on different people. This is because each perfume reacts to your unique body chemistry and heat. In other words, it’s best to wear it on your pulse points such as the neck, wrist and crock of the elbow, as these spots emanate more heat and better bring out the fragrance. A roll-on perfume like Silkygirl True Love Perfume Concentrate (9ml, $4.90) makes it easy to apply the fragrance on specific spots. Since perfume travels upwards when it evaporates, it’s also a good idea to spritz some on the back of your knees. The perfect amount of perfume to use varies from fragrance to fragrance. However, one to three sprays should generally suffice. Bear in mind that our noses can get accustomed to a scent if we wear it frequently, so resist the urge to increase the quantity you use. Pay attention to the amount you wore the first time when your nose was not saturated with the fragrance and stick to that quantity.

Get rid of bad or clashing odours Never try to use heavy perfumes to cover up odours, as this can smell offensive. Instead, start with showerfresh skin and use a good deodorant to keep body odours in check. If your feet tend to sweat and smell, invest in a foot spray like Scholl Odor Control Foot Spray (150ml, $14.40) as well. Efficacy is not the only factor to consider when choosing a deodorant. If you’re already wearing a statement fragrance, for instance, avoid heavily perfumed deodorants. Lemonkiwi deodorant and Chanel No. 5 are not exactly a match made in heaven. Go for a neutral or very lightly scented one like Rexona Woman Deodorant Roll-On Whitening (25ml, $2) instead.

Experiment with subtler alternatives

Of course, there are other creative ways to smell great for your date. A hair mist like Liese Moisturising Hair Mist (200ml, $14.90) not only moisturises tresses but leaves it smelling fruity sweet too. Alternatively, if you have long voluminous locks, spritz a hair brush with your favourite perfume and comb it through – the slightest breeze that ruffles your tresses will leave a seductive feminine trail. Shower gel and lotion bath sets are also a great way to add a subtle whiff of scent, especially if you are planning to go to packed places like the cinema and don’t want to overwhelm everyone around you.

Make it last How long a perfume lasts largely depends on the concentration of perfume oils. Eau de parfums (EDP) generally have the highest concentration and last the longest. This is followed eau de toilettes (EDT), colognes and body mists. If you find that your favourite scent doesn’t have enough staying power, the trick to getting more mileage is to layer. Many fragrances come with accompanying body washes and body lotions – using these will help your fragrance last longer. However, if you can’t get hold of them or do not wish to invest in the body products of specific fragrances, an unscented moisturiser such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream (16oz, $36.50) will work as a generic base as perfumes last longer on well-moisturised skin.

Prep your scent rescue kit Lastly, it is always good to pack for ‘scent emergencies’ because the last thing you want to worry about in the middle of a date is body odour. Carry fragrance miniatures or even samples of the perfume you are wearing for scent touch-ups on the go. It is also a good idea to include mints such as Clorets Sugar Free Mints ($1.30) or Eclipse Mints ($3.40) so that no matter where your date takes you and what cuisine you wind up having, you’ll always smell perfect and feel confident.

Dare to be a loud mouth

1

You may prefer your base makeup to be clean and minimal. But that just means more leeway to go wild and try out some bold, punchy colours on other parts of the face – most notably, the lips. We admit, it takes guts to trade in that reliable mauve or nude lippie for fuchsia, tangerine or pop-out peach. But hey, what’s the worst that can happen? You wipe it off or blot it to tone it down. Alternatively, you can even experiment with other ways to pull off the colour, such as applying a nude gloss over it or dabbing on some pressed powder. The point is simply to try something different. Besides, you might be pleasantly surprised what a hot pink lippie can do for your mood.

What’s New Feature

2 Be a blue-eyed girl It’s a more stand-out colour than brown, khaki or aubergine, and comes in enough variations that you’re sure to find at least one shade that suits you. Yep, we’re talking blue here. If kohl-rimmed eyes are your usual thing, try switching to navy instead, a colour that makeup maestro Tom Pecheux has described as “far less aggressive than black”. Prefer a cat eye? Have some fun by drawing it in bright cobalt or electric blue. You can keep the line thin if you’re worried the shade is too loud. For pastel or baby blue, the modern way to wear it is thick and intense so it doesn’t end up as a washed-out veil of colour on lids. And put a twist on the classic smoky by using rich shades like indigo, sapphire or Prussian blue. 1 Revlon Photoready Kajal in #002 Blue Nile, $15.90 2 Touch In Sol Dramatic Pencil Eye Liner in Deep Blue, $14.90 3 Collection Extreme 24 Hour Felt Tip Liner in #3 Blue, $16.90 4 L’Oreal Les Ombres E8 Eternal Blue, $22.90 5 Essence Quattro Eyeshadow in #09 Denim 4.0, $6.50

Liberate 3 your hair This one’s probably the easiest to pull off. Instead of bundling your hair into a no-frills ponytail or, on the other extreme, styling every strand into stiff perfection, simply letting tresses hang loose and take their natural shape. It’s a back-to-basics, chill-out option that doesn’t seem like you’re trying too hard. Keep styling products lightweight and minimal, and use your hands and fingers instead of brushes and curlers to work them through hair – you’re just after a little texture and volume, not photo-shoot perfection. There’s just one condition: make sure locks are clean, fresh and bouncy. A gentle clarifying or volumising shampoo will do the trick.

Indulge in a GILT trip The colour gold was everywhere on the catwalks, whether dusted on as eyeshadow, painted onto nails or even applied onto hair partings and eyebrows to make a dramatic statement. While you don’t have to go that far, gold makeup actually makes for a worthy investment. Luxe and sophisticated, it’s a colour that works with just about any skin tone. Plus, it can easily be layered, so you can use it to subtly highlight eyes in the day and intensify the colour at night for a more glamorous effect.

This is one for those who will never be caught dead without full-coverage face makeup. Like au naturel hair, this is a minimalist look that’s a breeze to do as long as you can get over your own little hang-ups about stepping out bare-faced. The keyword here is “raw”. Ditch the heavy foundations, thick concealers and strong blush and refine your complexion with dewy moisturisers and illuminators instead. FACES TO WATCH IN

Move over, Brangelina! There’s a new crop of young actors on the cusp of major stardom who are inching their way into the spotlight. Remember these names and faces because you’re going to be seeing them around. A lot.

PHOTO OF HAILEE STEINFELD SHOWBIT.COM

Hailee Steinfeld

At the age of just 14 with very little acting experience under her belt, she blew audiences away with her portrayal of Mattie Ross, a tough-as-nails teen out for justice in the Western flick, True Grit. Just how good was she? Good enough to garner an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in her first major film appearance. The following year, she became the new face of luxury brand Miu Miu. And in 2013, Time magazine listed her as one of the year’s most influential teens. Apart from a turn as Juliet opposite Douglas Booth, Steinfeld can most recently be seen in Ender’s Game, a sci-fi adventure based on the cult novel of the same name. Coming up this year alone: major roles in The Homesman, Barely Lethal and The Keeping Room, where she’ll share the screen with acclaimed actors such as Tommy Lee Jones, Hilary Swank and Jessica Alba.

Dakota Johnson

The daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, Dakota Johnson is a fashion model and actress who had small roles in a handful of films including The Social Network and 21 Jump Street. She starred in the short-lived television show Ben and Kate and….oh, never mind! All you really need to know about this willowy beauty can be summed up in four words: fifty, shades, of, grey. Having landed the much-hyped role of Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of E.L James’s bestselling erotic bondage novel, Johnson is already under the spotlight and you can be sure you’ll be seeing plenty of her (in every meaning of the phrase) once the film is released. Think the next Bella Swan, but with handcuffs and a kinky millionaire boyfriend in place of angsty vampire spouse.

PHOTO OF TOM HIDDLESTON IMAGE.NET

Tom Hiddleston

It says a lot when you are able to upstage the mighty hero, Thor, in his own movie. That’s exactly what Hiddleston did as Loki, the thunder god’s adopted brother. Taking on his villainous role in Thor: The Dark World with so much glee that you can’t help but root for him, Hiddleston’s show-stealing turn had fans calling for a standalone Loki film. When he’s not filling the spandex of a Marvel supervillain, however, this British thespian can be found in some rather intense roles. There’s the dashing Royal Air Force pilot entangled in a love affair with the wife of a judge in The Deep Blue Sea; one half of a vampire couple who have been in love with each other for centuries in Only Lovers Left Alive (no, it’s nothing like Twilight); and a part in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming horror flick Crimson Peak. Oh, you can also catch him in Muppets Most Wanted and hear him in animated feature The Pirate Fairy as Captain Hook. Does this guy have range or what?

What’s New Feature

Dane DeHaan

PHOTO OF DANE DEHAAN IMAGE.NET

Young, talented and exuding intensity on-screen despite his baby-faced appearance, you can see why this 27-yearold has been likened to a fledgling Leonardo DiCaprio. Heck, they even look alike. Making his big splash in the 2012 hit movie Chronicle, in which he played a teenager who developed superpowers, DeHaan followed that up with roles in both heavyweight and arthouse flicks including Lincoln, The Place Beyond the Pines and Kill Your Darlings. The last one created a small tizzy, thanks to DeHaan’s on-screen kiss with co-star Daniel Radcliffe (yup, that’s Harry Potter). His stock is set to rise further when he appears in this year’s blockbuster sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Spidey’s best friend Harry Osborn, the character previously played by James Franco.

Shailene Woodley

PHOTO OF SHAILENE WOODLEY GOLDEN VILLAGE

You probably remember her as George Clooney’s daughter in sleeper hit, The Descendents, but Woodley has actually been in television since she was eight. She had bit parts in a whole list of shows – from The O.C and Everybody Loves Raymond to CSI: NY – before landing the lead in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Though The Descendents put her on the radar, her big screen breakthrough is likely to come via this year’s Divergent, a sci-fi actioner based on the novel of the same name. The dystopian, post-apocalyptic story has shades of The Hunger Games, with Woodley playing a similarly tenacious heroine who rebels against the system. It remains to be seen if the film can catapult her into the big league, but even if it doesn’t, she has another potential hit lined up – The Fault In Our Stars, a tragi-comic teen romance based on (you guessed it) a bestselling young adult novel.

Jack Reynor

Until recently, few would have heard of Jack Reynor. Many still have no clue who he is. So why is he one to watch? Because this fresh-faced Irish actor will soon be seen in this year’s heavy metal extravaganza, Transformers: Age of Extinction. Replacing Shia LaBeouf ’s character, he stars with Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz as the film’s new leading man. And in case you thought he’s just another beefcake, Reynor actually won the best actor gong at the Irish Film & Television Awards for his breakout role in indie film What Richard Did. We hear Reynor’s contracted for three Transformers films, beginning a new trilogy for the franchise, so expect his star to burn brighter in the near future.

Elizabeth Olsen

PHOTOS OF JACK REYNOR AND DOUGLAS BOOTH IMAGE.NET PHOTO OF ELIZABETH OLSEN GOLDEN VILLAGE

In case you were wondering, yes, this is the little sister of former child stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Beginning acting at the age of four, her breakout turn came in 2011 with the critically acclaimed Martha Marcy May Marlene, in which she portrayed a damaged young woman trying to break away from a cult. This was followed by roles in Red Lights which starred Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver, Kill Your Darlings with fellow rising star Dane DeHaan and Oldboy, a remake of the uber-violent South Korean revenge film. Next up: back to back blockbuster appearances, starting with Godzilla this year and the highly anticipated comic book colossus, The Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, where she will play the character of Scarlet Witch. At the rate she’s going, we predict a film career that’s going to outlast her sisters’ by far.

Douglas Booth

Okay, we know it’s hard. But if you can just turn your attention away from 21-year-old Douglas Booth’s incredibly pretty face for a moment, you’ll find that he actually has a pretty (sorry, that word again) credible acting career. Rising to prominence in 2010 after portraying Boy George in the BBC drama Worried About the Boy, this former Burberry model then played the lead role of Pip in BBC’s Great Expectations, with reviews of his performance ranging from “haunting” to talk of whether he’s too “distractingly lovely” and “more beautiful than Estella”. His most recent film outing? As Romeo opposite Hailee Steinfeld’s Juliet in a modern retelling of the ultimate tragic romance. Coming up this year, big things in store for Booth: a major role in biblical epic Noah alongside heavyweight actors Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins, followed by another in Jupiter Ascending, the latest scifi offering from the directors of The Matrix. Alright, we’ll let you get back to the swooning now.

People are often creatures of habit. We may crave some adventure and a taste of the new, but not so much as to be completely thrown off. Supply & Demand is one restaurant that offers up food both refreshing and reassuring. A huge 200-seater establishment opened by five Singaporean friends, Supply & Demand boasts industrial-chic decor and a laidback, cosy vibe – think exposed bulbs and pipes, concrete floors and metal furnishings contrasted with fat cushions, wooden tables and walls, and stairs lined with cookbooks and literary classics. In short, exactly the kind of place that’s great for chilling out with friends or a casual dinner date.

Originally an Italian-Peruvian restaurant offering popular dishes from both countries, its menu has since been tweaked. Pastas and pizzas are still on the list, but the Peruvian fare has been replaced by Singaporean favourites and selections from around the region, such as Burmese tea leaf salad, Lahpet Thoke. After dinner, head on upstairs to the restaurant’s rooftop al fresco dining and bar area. Not only are you able to kick back with cocktails and beer (at very reasonable prices during happy hour, especially), you get to do so while drinking in the excellent view of the waterfront and city skyline. A TA S T E OF EXOT I C S OU T H AM E RI CA You may not be able to take a trip halfway round the world and down south to Argentina, but your taste buds certainly can. Respected Argentine chef Diego Jacquet has teamed up with local entrepreneur Cynthia Chua to inject some spark into our local dining scene. The result is Bochinche, a 100-seater restaurant serving up scrumptious, refined Argentinean fare in a ruggedchic setting of dark wood and leather.

Loosely translating to “ruckus” in Spanish, Bochinche is unlike what most people would expect of Argentinean food. In place of big slabs of meat on the bone, you get a creative array of “small-plate” dishes, similar to tapas, which showcase the diversity of Argentinean produce and cooking styles. Don’t be fooled by the size of the dishes, though – they may be small but every bite offers an intense and exciting mix of flavours and textures.

Chef Jacquet has introduced similar items here as those at his two London establishments – Casa Malevo (named one of Britain’s best restaurants by Tatler Magazine Food Guide 2011) and Zoilo. Highlights include Provoleta cheese with almonds and honey ($16), braised pig head croquettes with quince jam ($15) and the Gambas al ajo ($29), a smoky mix of caramelised pork belly, chorizo and prawn. Another must-try: the awardwinning Provenzal chips ($12), tossed with parsley, garlic and assorted spices. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert, either. The moist, creamy Milk Cake ($15) may be extremely rich in taste, but is accompanied by refreshingly tangy passionfruit sorbet. The crème brulee with home-made banana split ice-cream ($17) is a winner too.

I N DIAN FI NE C O OKI NG WI T H A C O LONIA L TWI S T The days of British rule in Asia were a lot of things, good and bad. But they were also undeniably glamorous, a time when Maharajas and English blue-bloods threw lavish parties and exotic feasts. And it is this air of grandeur and the art of royal North Indian cooking that Earl of Hindh wants to bring to diners here. Situated at Sentosa Cove’s Quayside Isle, a waterfront dining stretch of chic eateries, Earl of Hindh offers a rustic colonial-era setting indoors – complete with copper ceiling fans, dome-shaped wall reliefs and antique lights – and an impressive view of the marina from its al fresco area. Popular picks from the menu include the Kakori Kebab, made of fine-minced lamb flavoured with spices and chargrilled till it’s melt-in-your-mouth tender. Other more unusual creations are the Ambi Paneer Tikka which is charcoal-grilled chunks of cottage cheese stuffed with sweet and sour mango chutney, and the Dariyai Tikka, which features medallions of fresh salmon marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, fennel, honey and mustard oil. And be sure to sample the Tandoori Murgi, a marinated whole chicken chargrilled in the restaurant’s open-view tandoor oven. Expect the tab to come to around $40-$60 per person. The British touch to all this comes courtesy of the wide selection of premium whiskeys from Scotland, selected in partnership with Whiskey World Singapore. it makes for a great place to stop and recharge over a cuppa. And even if you’re not a cyclist, you can still drop in for some good java while admiring the beautiful classic bikes for sale.

So why, then, is it worth checking out? Because it’s gorgeous. Because it’s a warehouse that manages to be industrial-cool yet somehow warm and homey at the same time. Because it’s a huge, quiet space away from the maddening crowds (15,000 sq ft big enough for you?). And did we mention the coffee is ace, too?

At the moment, Wheeler’s Yard still hasn’t got its F&B license due to zoning restrictions and its warehouse status. The coffee is provided on a tipping basis for now and we’re told most customers have been considerate enough to tip the usual market price. MID-AIR

Aerial yoga is a unique blend of yoga and aerial exercises that lets you turn your fitness routine upside down! Using a seven-yard long harness swing made of a special fabric to suspend in mid-air, you’ll get to experience a whole new freedom of movement and rediscover your centre of gravity in this low-impact exercise. Aerial Yoga is highly focused on the use of your core muscles and may seem a bit intimidating for beginners, but most foundation classes are designed for those without any or little experience with aerial sports or yoga. However, having at least some basic experience with yoga will definitely help. Aerial yoga is perfect for those with joint worries, especially if you have back problems. Inverted exercises will help you to stretch and relax your spine, which is great for relieving back pains. You get improved posture and a hot, well-toned upper body too. Upside Motion (upsidemotion.com), which has premises at the former Singapore Turf Club and Armenian Street, is currently one of the studios which offer aerial yoga programmes.

The new health food superheroes

Meet the new superfoods of 2014. Denyse Yeo picks the ones that are easiest to find here.

What’s New Feature

Y

ou’ve probably heard of quinoa, kale and goji berries and their status as the ‘in’ thing among health buffs. But they’re hardly the only cool kids on the block, with new superfoods appearing on the horizon boasting their own set of impressive health benefits. In fact, this year looks set to be a bumper year, with research company Innova Market placing new superfoods on its list of top 10 food and drink trends for 2014. “Nature’s own functional foods: fruits, vegetables and grains are being revisited,” said its researchers recently. Superfoods are known to be rich in nutrients and have lots of health benefits. But you don’t have to include them in your diet, says Lauren Ho, dietician and nutritionist from the Singapore Heart Association. “While there is scientific

evidence for some of the health claims for these ‘superfoods’, others remain inconclusive, thus requiring further research. “Should we then include them in our daily diets? We don’t have to, but we can, especially those that are readily available and are affordable, such as the brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, which are excellent sources of antioxidants. “There is no harm in including these ‘superfoods’ in our daily diets, as long as we eat them in moderation and include a wide variety of other foods in our diet as well,” she says. Still keen on checking them out? Lucky for us, these new superfoods, which are gaining popularity in the West, include some common fruit and vegetables easily found in Singapore.

We pick the best ones chia seeds Already popular with many Singaporeans, this ancient Aztec food is full of heart-protective omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, dietary fibre and antioxidants. Chia seeds slow digestion and expand in your stomach, so you feel fuller faster and longer, according to US News & World Report. Add them to beverages, smoothies and soups. You can also toss them with salads or sprinkle them on yoghurt. Most supermarkets or health food stores stock them.

Jimaca Slowly gaining popularity in the West, jicama is better known as beng kuang or Chinese turnip in Singapore. This crunchy, slightly sweet root vegetable is chockfull of vitamin C and minerals. It is a good source of inulin, a type of prebiotic that helps to increase levels of healthy bacteria in the gut, and may also boost collagen and fend off wrinkles, AFP reports.

tumeric Time to hit the wet market. A spice staple in Singaporean kitchens, turmeric has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant qualities. The herb has long been used in Indian traditional medicine or Ayurveda to treat arthritis and other chronic conditions.

yuzu This citrus fruit from Japan is known for its powerful antioxidant properties. Its juice has three times more vitamin C than lemons while the peel has an antiinflammatory agent called limonene, according to Yahoo!. Yuzu juice concentrate is widely available, but it’s often artificially sweetened. For better health benefits, get the fruit fresh at Japanese supermarkets.

Kimchi Say “annyeonghaseyo” to 2014’s newest superfood. Eating this fermented cabbage dish could help control your cholesterol levels, AFP reported of a new study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. Kimchi is packed with vitamins A, B, and C, and healthy bacteria known as probiotics, which aids digestion.

azuki beans These small Japanese red beans are packed with protein. They also contain powerful antioxidants – quercetin, tannins and anthocyanins – that help to repair cell damage, and improve skin quality and elasticity, reports the London Evening Standard.

Oldies but goodies

The new superfoods may be trendy, but there’s no reason to ignore what may seem like “boring” food. Says Lauren Ho, dietician and nutritionist from the Singapore Heart Association: “In fact, the everyday foods that we eat – namely fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, legumes, fatty fish and so on – provide health-promoting nutrients just as valuable as those found in so-called ‘superfoods’. “Instead of focusing on a few superfoods, we should simply eat a balanced and varied diet that includes foods from the four food groups (rice and alternatives, fruit, vegetables, and meat and alternatives), and eat them in moderation.

“By doing so, we can be sure that we have all the nutrients that we need, that will work synergistically in our body, to promote good health and wellbeing.”

Her picks for overall health benefits Fatty fish

Legumes

Salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, and cod have omega-3 fatty acids that help to protect the heart and lower high blood pressure.

Peas, beans and lentils, for example, are an excellent source of protein and dietary fibre, and are a low-fat, low-GI source of carbohydrates, iron, zinc, calcium, and B-vitamins.

Whole grains

Nuts & Seeds They are good sources of protein and healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, dietary fibre, folate, arginine, plant sterols, vitamin E and are low in saturated fat.

They contain bran, endosperm, and germ, and are better sources of dietary fibre, B-vitamins, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, some essential fats, and phytonutrients, than refined grains, says Lauren. Try unpolished (brown, red or black) rice, brown rice beehoon, wholemeal breads, oats, rye, corn, quinoa and buckwheat.

Low-fat dairy foods, fruit and vegetables Rich in potassium and low in sodium. They have been shown to help reduce blood pressure, says Lauren.

New online fashion entrepreneurs

In the past, fashion entrepreneurs usually followed the same career trajectory: they worked as designers before launching their own clothing company. Today, however, the Internet and an increasingly global market mean that entrepreneurs can instead create their own unique paths to success. In our fast-paced modern era, an inspired idea, combined with a distinct need in the marketplace, can launch a buzzedabout and lucrative business. From a high-tech consulting firm that uses big data to predict trends to a subscription-based nail polish empire, these six companies – all led by brilliant and enterprising female entrepreneurs – are changing the way the fashion business works.

OF WOOL AND THE GANG In the modern fashion industry, one might think of knitting as a tired and obsolete pursuit. Young entrepreneurs Jade Harwell and Aurelie Popper are turning that idea on its head with Wool and the Gang (WATG), a global co-op that defies stereotypes by injecting a dose of hip, youthful cool into the age-old craft.

world. This job enables them to knit from home. It takes a bit longer to produce fashion this way, but great things take time.

Founded by Lisa Sabrier as a brick-and-mortar shop in Europe selling yarn kits, WATG really took off when her partners Harwell and Popper launched its online incarnation in 2008. Since then, they have built the brand into a fiercely loyal global collective of knitters and done what some might have considered impossible – making the time-worn pastime cool again.

WHAT ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE? The WATG product attracts all ages – we design timeless pieces that are meant to live in your wardrobe forever. Our customers either have a passion for knitting or appreciate the full transparency of knowing where their knitwear has come from.

WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR WOOL AND THE GANG COME FROM? The concept of Wool and the Gang was born out of a mission to make knitting sexy, easy and fun. When we launched WATG in 2008, we felt there weren’t any cool knitting patterns available on the market, only dusty, complicated granny patterns. HOW HAS THE COMPANY DEVELOPED SINCE THEN? Our knit kits were the foundation of WATG. However, we saw a demand from customers who didn’t want to knit, but loved our products. It was clear there was demand for both kits and pre-made items. So now we’re creating a global network of knitters who are producing fast fashion in a sustainable way. We believe in exceptional design that’s unique, never from a factory. Each item has been entirely hand knitted by our Gang of Makers, based all over the

We believe it’s important to use aspirational images to elevate the craft of hand-knitted clothes.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO BUILD BAUBLEBAR’S BRAND? It’s important to us that all of our editorial and aesthetic assets are a strong reflection of the brand, which is all about having fun with fashion. We also try to be mindful about communicating an authentic voice in everything we do. One of our favourite perennial campaigns is our Guest Bartender program. Every month we tap a new influencer to curate and editorialise a unique collection. It’s a great opportunity to expose our audience to a new and unique fashion perspective.

Former Harvard Business School classmates Daniella Yacobovsky and Amy Jain were inspired to start their e-business BaubleBar while engaging in one of their favourite pastimes – shopping at the famed department store, Saks Fifth Avenue. They had no trouble finding the perfect frocks, handbags and shoes, but not the jewelry to complete their ensembles. Most costume jewelry available in stores was either low in quality or prohibitively pricey, and they wished there was a shop that bridged that divide, which was how BaubleBar was conceived.

At price points from about USD$15 to $200, BaubleBar’s jewels provide women a luxurious look without breaking the bank. By sourcing their pieces directly from designers, Yacobovsky and Jain offer a product assortment that is constantly updated, without the usual retail markup. IS THE MARKET FEEDBACK BETTER THAN YOU’D EXPECTED? WHAT KIND OF WOMEN ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS? I don’t think we ever expected the reaction we’ve received and it’s always incredibly humbling to meet someone who loves what we do. We chose to build BaubleBar because we were frustrated consumers and we wanted to build something better than what we saw in the marketplace. The BaubleBar shopper is experimental with fashion and likes to have fun with her jewelry. We sell a fun product that should make you feel good – we’re all about guilt-free experimentation.

OF EDITD

PHOTOGRAPHER Christine Wehrmeier for Cool Hunt WRITER Hana Hwang for Cool Hunt EDITOR AND COORDINATOR Ashley Heaton for Cool Hunt CREATIVE DIRECTOR Dana Poblete for Cool Hunt HAIR AND MAKEUP Murat Aktas using MAC Cosmetics

Fashion is known for being driven by creativity and inspiration. Some trends seem to come out of nowhere. It’s hard to believe that anyone could use numerical figures alone to predict which styles will flourish in such a fanciful industry, but former fashion designer Julia Fowler does just that with her fashion data firm EDITD. Compiling countless details – from consumer buying patterns to which products have been discounted – into a customised software program, EDITD helps predict the newest global fashion trends so that retailers, designers, buyers and merchandisers can take immediate action on what’s hot and what’s not. WHAT MADE YOU START A FASHION DATA COMPANY TO PREDICT TRENDS? The idea came from my own personal needs as a fashion designer. I felt there was a substantial lack of information out there to help me and my colleagues do our jobs properly. As a designer, retail buyer or merchandiser, your job is to produce products that your customer will want to buy in the right quantities, sizes and price points. Every time you see a product on discount, it’s because the wrong decisions were made and this leads to a lot of waste in the industry. I wanted to fix that problem! WHAT ARE THE MAIN FACTORS IN YOUR DATA MODEL OF FASHION FORECASTING? The apparel industry is constantly generating information about products, how well they sold and at what prices, which sizes or colours sold out quickest, and whether that product was discounted or replenished. This information is extremely valuable in helping retailers and brands inform their future decisions. At EDITD, we package that data to help our clients trade more competitively. DESIGNERS, FASHION EDITORS AND CELEBRITIES ALL INFLUENCE CONSUMER PURCHASES. HOW DOES YOUR SYSTEM FACTOR? Our software allows clients to search the world’s biggest apparel database for any fashion style or trend, and then understand where the trend came from, how it’s currently selling and what is next for it, and set up alerts to monitor it. An example is the urbanwear trend (think baseball shirts, bomber jackets and slogan tees – as seen on Rihanna, and at Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim). Slogan t-shirts have the fastest sell-through rate (53 days), lowest average price (£20) and a low rate of discounting (36% currently).

As the founder and CEO of Project Gravitas, Lisa Sun produces universally flattering dresses that cater to every body shape and lifestyle. But Project Gravitas offers women more than just office-appropriate clothing. It offers gravitas itself – that elusive quality that allows an empowered woman to carry herself with poise, confidence and strength.

WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND PROJECT GRAVITAS? The first inspiration was the idea of gravitas itself. I was 22 the first time someone used the word “gravitas” to describe my lack of it. I realised I needed to work not only on how smart and confident I am on the inside, but also how polished I am on the outside. My second inspiration was to create clothing that can do it all. I wanted the perfect dress that combines what I love about my best luxury-label pieces, slimming comfort of my favourite yoga pants and inspiration. WHAT KIND OF WOMEN ARE YOU TARGETING? Our women are seeking an extra boost in work or in life – they want power, style and to be seen as having substance and style. They are dynamic, aspiring and not

one-size-fits-all. Hence, we are speaking to the young woman just starting out in life who wants to trade up, to the super mom who wants to treat herself because she’s spending time on everyone but herself, and to the accomplished woman who sees us as her go-to staple. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ADVANCE YOUR BRAND ON THE INTERNET? We do not call ourselves a “brand” – we are a Project. We invite everyone to be a part of what we are doing. We know we are successful when women are sending us messages about the moments in their life that Project Gravitas was a part of – the big meeting where our dress gave you confidence or the dinner party where you received the most compliments ever. We want people to share these moments and that’s why social media is the perfect platform to get to know us as people and for us to get to know our customers.

WE’RE IMPRESSED THAT PROJECT GRAVITAS PROVIDES PLUS-SIZED DRESSES. WHAT LED TO THIS DECISION? One of our core values as a company is that every woman is beautiful – every shape and every size. When I was named one of Washingtonian Magazine’s Best-Dressed Women, I was a size 16. We are planning to produce a set of our styles in every size because every woman deserves to have gravitas and deserves to feel confident and stylish. The woman makes the dress, not the other way around. When it’s about the woman, you don’t worry about size affecting fashion sense. Size is just a number. We’re more than a number!

For Sun, Project Gravitas is not just a clothing brand, but a testament to her own personal journey. Back in 2000, she was moved to act when a supervisor told her she did not have enough “gravitas”. Over the next 11 years, Sun learned how to project that vital quality while working for the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. In 2012, she decided to share what she’d learned with other women, using her life savings to start Project Gravitas in New York City.

saleswoman and then trying to find the right bra for me through what seemed to be a random trial-and-error process. I knew that if we could apply the right technology, we could make the bra shopping experience so much more enjoyable.

Michelle Lam experienced the same frustrating process in a San Francisco department store, but she walked out with an innovative business idea. The young venture capitalist raised $4 million and launched True&Co. in 2012, an online bra shop. A user can simply take a two-minute quiz and True&Co. will send her five bras, allowing her to keep the one that fits her best. Within a few days of the launch, over 20,000 women had signed up for the service.

After visiting a number of expert bra fitters, I realised that pattern recognition drove a lot of their recommendations. I wondered, “if women could self-report their

own issues, could we figure out the range of potential sizes and styles that would be best for them?” We then tried an early version of our fit quiz – it was fun, easy and quick – and yes, women told us that the bras they tried on worked! Since then we’ve improved both our quiz and the system that recommends the right styles and sizes. WHY DID YOU NAME YOUR BRAND TRUE&CO.? “True” is a strong, emotional word that represents the woman we are trying to serve. It also represents the truth we are telling her – we’re putting the power of self-knowledge and discovery in her hands by allowing her to understand, through our fit quiz and personal shopping experience, what flatters her unique body shape.
