THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Let the party begin! Packed with over ten thousand residents at the countdown celebration, Harmony Square witnessed once again, and for the last time, everyone’s anticipation for the arrival of the New Year. The Punggol East Talent Mania II Finals kicked off the celebrations in the midst of exuberant energy and waving of light sticks. Ten finalists pitted their singing talents onstage, and Crescendo won the title. The group of four young men - Aznor Raif Bin Azimi, Mohamed Amirul Bin Jamil, Muhammad Shafiq Haziq B S, and Nur Afiq Bin Abdul Talib, serenaded the crowd with their soulful rendition of ‘Flying Without Wings’. Sky lanterns, scribbled with written wishes for the New Year, were then released into the air. As the clock hit midnight, a display of fireworks lit up the night sky. Singapore Idols Taufik and Hady performed in a duet for the first time ever, and as promised, were greeted by fanatical girly screams. Let’s bring on the awesome New Year! COUNTDOWN TO 2012! The night was still young as a myriad of aunties, uncles, parents and kids partook in games, snacked on popcorn and candy floss, and delightfully received free goodie bags. Attendees were kept entertained by the deathdefying stunts of an escape artist, who freed himself from a straightjacket, jumped on broken glass and swallowed fire, to the accompaniment of heavy rock music. COVER STORY Jason Tan

Love It, What’s the coolest job ever? One that allows you to do what you’re passionate about and getting paid for it. As Confucius said, ‘Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life’. VIBES catches up with Pasir Ris-Punggol residents who have been to unpathed waters and undreamed shores in pursuit of their dreams.

Live It

THE MAGIC OF PASSION Think wizard hats and magical wands, think Parry Hotter. Magician Jason Tan better known as Parry Hotter, can do more than pulling a rabbit out of a hat. This ex-teacher has managed to bring out the magic in science lessons by creating innovative science tricks too. He believes in following his dreams, and has since attained great success in a rather enchanting job. What sparked your love for magic? When I was a child, I was always amazed by the tricks that I watched on television. I always thought to myself that it would be great if I could do all those awesome tricks and entertain people with such tricks. What are some of your trademark tricks and acts? I would like to think that my puppet is special, because while most puppets talk and sing, my puppet can do magic tricks with me too! One of the highlights of my show is when I make a dove appear from a bursting balloon. People just find it hard to believe that a real bird can seemingly appear from a balloon, so they ask, “Is the bird real?” I also perform some science tricks, hoping that children can see education in a different light. Education is not always about the chalk and board. It is about having a lively curiosity and doing things the smart way. What do you love most about your job? I love my job as it gives me the flexibility to work out my own schedule and I’m paid to do what I love. I really feel happy when I get messages and emails from the clients after the shows thanking me for a job well done. It makes me feel really appreciated after all the hard work that I’ve put in for the shows. What is your advice for aspiring magicians? Do what you like and not what others tell you. All of us have our own unique style and showmanship.

Divyasri S A

A BALANCING ACT Seeking a more balanced lifestyle and wanting more freedom to enjoy life, Lee Yan Foon, 52, left the insurance industry to become a yoga instructor. Besides stretching and flexing while doing yoga, she has managed to stretch her time with more flexible working hours too! Lee Yan Foon

IN A CLASS OF HER OWN At a tender age of five, Divyasri S A, has already immersed herself in the art of Indian classical music. Today, she is an Indian classical violin and vocal instructor, with a string of students from children to adults.

What are the benefits of doing yoga? You can reap many benefits by doing yoga - weight loss, improved balance and posture, improved concentration, increased strength and flexibility, reduced stress and improved breathing. For some people, it is easy to master yoga because they are born flexible. However, regardless of your age, as long as you continue practicing within your own limits, you will be able to reap positive results.

How did you become a violin instructor? I hail from a musically inclined family. My father and grandfather were also violinists. It became natural for me to fall in love with this instrument. I started learning from my father and later became the disciple of several great masters in India before I became a violin instructor. Is it easy learning to play the violin? In my humble opinion, it is a difficult thing to learn. You need to spend a lot of time practicing when you first start out. Mastering the art of playing the violin requires a combination of vocal knowledge and practical playing technique. What are the benefits of playing the violin? Learning any form of music can improve one’s life tremendously. You not only learn a new skill set, but also attain inner peace and happiness. What does it take to become a violin instructor? Passion, patience and perseverance - I believe these three qualities are fundamental in becoming a good instructor.

Can you share some of your memorable experiences as a yoga instructor? There was once, a participant approached me and told me that she has grown by more than 1 cm. She was in her 40s! I explained to her that yoga actually helped correct her bearing, so her spine was probably straighter and thus she became taller! There is another participant who had severe arthritis. Despite the pain, she persevered and she told me that her arthritis is under control and her strength and flexibility has improved considerably. I really admire her spirit! What do you love most about your job? This is the perfect job for me, as this job doesn’t just help me earn a living, but also allows me to exercise and help others exercise. I work for only two or three hours a day, thus I have more free time to take up other hobbies and enjoy life in general. I have much more freedom in scheduling my classes, and I don’t have a boss breathing down my neck!

What do you love most about your job? It gives immense happiness when I see my students learning quickly. I want them to have a deep appreciation of music and excel in it. Playing and listening to violin is like meditation for me. When I play or listen to a particular composition, it reminds me of great legends. I will be immersed and emotions will run high. I have worked at several music organizations before but now I am conducting classes on a freelance basis so that I have time for both my family and my profession.

aring for a person with special needs is never easy, but parents/caregivers are not alone in meeting this challenge. The Special Needs Trust Company (SNTC) provides a low-cost trust service in answer to the question which troubles parents and caregivers most – What will happen to my special needs dependent after I am gone? SNTC’s trust scheme allows parents/ caregivers to put money into a trust account for their special needs dependents. After the parent/caregiver has passed away, money from the trust account is disbursed according to their wishes set out in a Letter of Intent to ensure that all money is used exclusively and appropriately for the benefit of the person with special needs. SNTC has a team of dedicated social workers to work with parents/

caregivers to develop comprehensive care plans tailored to the special needs of their dependents. SNTC’s social workers will make home visits to ensure that the dependents are cared for. An SNTC trust account can be set up with a minimum sum of $5,000. The account can be topped up at any time and may be used to receive future gifts under the parent/caregiver’s will, insurance and CPF nominations. Cash-strapped parents/caregivers should not be discouraged by the minimum sum of $5,000 to set up a trust account. SNTC uses the donations it receives to help low-income parents and caregivers like 68-year-old single mother Mdm Yip Lum Fong to set up trust for her 28-year-old son Cheah Tat Hiang, who suffers from Down syndrome. AGE IS NO ISSUE!

From a self-employed fruit seller to a full-fledged driver with Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (Moral Home For Disabled Adults), Mr Chua Kean Cheong, 58, has indeed leaped past boundaries to emerge today as a great example for others to follow. Having felt the financial strain on him and his family, Mr Chua decided to approach Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S for employment assistance in mid-August last year, as he was unable to secure a job on his own due to his age. As Mr Chua possessed a class 3 driving license, Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S felt that he would fare well as a driver. Willing to work on shift duties and weekends when required, Mr Chua clinched the job soon after. “What drives me is the passion to work in a welfare organization,” said Mr Chua. “Hence the travelling and waking up in the early morning hours is not an issue.” Till now, he enjoys his job as a driver, especially in delivering meals to the elderly.

For employment assistance, please contact Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. at 6388 1742 or email: [email protected]. Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is located at Sengkang Community Club, c/o 2 Sengkang Square #01-01, Sengkang Community Hub, Singapore 545025. Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. aims to provide holistic assistance to unemployed residents to help them towards employment and self-sufficiency and is supported by the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple.
