FROM PASTOR JOHN Our church was filled at both services on Easter Sunday. It was a glorious day! But the celebration of our Lord’ resurrection did not end on April 12. The Easter season continues for seven weeks, concluding with Pentecost Sunday on May 31. The Bible records, in the 2nd chapter of Acts, how the Holy Spirit came and filled the disciples with power to proclaim the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. Five thousand people heard the gospel, believe the good news, and were baptized. They too became disciples of Christ infused with the power of the Holy Spirit to be servants of the Lord and witnesses to his resurrection. During the month of May, leading up to Pentecost, our mission at St. Paul’s will be to encourage and equip our members to become disciples. We will begin with our youth who are preparing for the day of their Confirmation

in the faith on Pentecost Sunday. Emily Clamser and I will take our middle-school youth to Camp Agape for a Confirmation Retreat the first weekend in May. There will also be a Via de Cristo weekend for adults May 14-17 where I will serve as Spiritual Director for those who want to keep growing in their faith as disciples of Christ. Then on Sunday, May 24, we will celebrate the baptism of Julian Guthrie, infant son of Chris & Christine Guthrie. Julian, along with the many other newly baptized members of our church, will be the focus of our mission and our purpose as disciples of Christ: to pass the faith along to the next generation. Thank you for your partnership in this ministry of sharing the good news of our risen Lord, so that others may know the faith and hope that is ours in Jesus Christ!

FROM PASTOR MARK …previously in Pastor Mark’s April newsletter article… To everything there is a season,” the writer of Ecclesiastes has said. So here’s my challenge: Who wants to try, with me, to see what this Easter season can be if we live as Easter people? Put away negativity. Wake up with an “ALLELUIA” on our lips. Laugh! I double dog dare you this Easter discipline. Get a calendar. Fifty days to go. And we’ll see where the Holy Spirit takes us after that! and now…. According to my count, there are still quite a few days to go before the Easter season gives way to Pentecost. If this newsletter is delivered the first week of May, you’ll still have at least 23-25 days to go. So how’s it going? Is anybody taking me up on that “double dog dare?” And by the way, in case you’re not clear on what that means, according to the Urban Dictionary on the internet, a “double dog dare” means “to up the ante to try to get someone to do something. Not as much as a triple dog dare.” Far be it from me to “dare” you to do anything,

but I am discovering there is a lot of joy in getting into this Easter discipline. Each day, upon arising, I am putting feet to the floor with a rousing verbal “Alleluia” followed by “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” With that, I have upped the ante on what is not going to get me down. I will not let the typically awful morning news keeping me from looking for a positive human interest story (think of it as a hidden Easter egg and hunt for it). While driving, when cut off by an insensitive driver, instead of a rage response I let out a hearty “Alleluia.” When I get the big bill in the mail… okay, I don’t exactly shout “Alleluia,” but I do look up to heaven and remind myself, “Christ is risen.” and then proclaim “Alleluia!” It’s all about keeping a healthy Easter perspective. So far, this practice is going well… surprisingly well. So may I respectfully “dare” you to put some more “Alleluia” into your Easter discipline? And please share with me some of your stories and how putting the “Alleluia” on your lips and in your heart has made these days a little better. Slip it to me on a piece of paper, or email me [email protected]. Or just tell me when you see me next. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! ALLELUIA!

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

ATTENTION ALL MEN The first Gathering/Work Day of "St Paul's Mission Men" will be held on Saturday May 9th from 10am to 2pm at Keever Hall. We will enjoy coffee, doughnuts, and fellowship followed by a devotion and prayer. We will then begin our work tasks which will include: sealing the picnic tables, painting the movie room sign, changing light bulbs and more if time permits. If you have a survey to return, bring it with you to this gathering or place it into the box outside of Keever Hall. If you need a survey, they are available beside the box or on the church web site. If you have questions or suggestions call Dan Dresher 675-9640. Thank you for your interest in this new Men’s Ministry ~ The Power Builders

FROM BILL REMELE Heartfelt thanks are expressed to all who conducted, played instruments, or sang in our worship services through Holy Week and Easter Day. We never thank our musicians enough! We continue to experience Resurrection joy through the Sundays of Easter which last until the Day of Pentecost – May 31 this year. We will continue singing “This Is the Feast of Victory for Our God” as our Hymn of Praise. Please do not hesitate to remind me of your favorite Easter hymns! We have time to sing them all! Choir practice times will shorten a bit until the fall season begins. Marcia and Ray will join me in welcoming new and returning members to both choirs. Now is a good time to “try out” singing! Finally, a big Thank You goes to our acolytes and crucifers who faithfully serve in our worship! Children and youth who would like to serve, and are not yet serving, are invited to speak to any of the current ones or their parents. They will get you trained and on the schedule! Property team presented proposal on A/C units after getting 2 more competitive bids. Proposal is to replace unit in Nursery entirely and do a recommended repair on the Parlor unit. Recommended omitting Keever basement unit for now. Council approved proposal for work to be done by T.A. Woods. Will spend approximately $7500 rather than the $19,000 originally presented for replacing all 3 units. Also approved funding to finish floor in boiler room to complete that project. Dick Hanson has an air conditioning unit for the kitchen and is arranging for an installation soon.

Treasurer reported that contributions are still running behind expenditures, but that we are managing to keep up with most obligations.

Many activities forthcoming with Youth and Family Ministries including LYO event and VBS both in July. Relay for Life fundraising is ongoing. Kevin Higdon has been accepted to Bishop’s School. Yard sale scheduled for May 30. Azalea Festival parking raised $872.

Pastors reported blessing-filled services from Lent through Easter, all well attended. The Easter Vigil service was most impressive with much thanks to Ryan Blake for all his efforts putting this together as well as the “Foundation of Worship” sessions on Tuesday nights in Lent.

Worship and Music team reported much positive feedback from our liturgical dance group on March 29. We are still in need of an adult leader for the acolytes and crucifers, hoping someone will feel the call to take on this role.

All other ministry teams have been meeting and working toward goals for this year.

Next Council meeting scheduled for May 11.

THRIVENT Tempus fugit! It is true that time flies and it is time again to renew our Thrivent memberships. It is also time to join Thrivent for the first time if you have never been a member. The full name is Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Over the years, Thrivent has matched fund with many of St. Paul’s projects and made a worthwhile endeavor into a very successful and profitable project. Recently when our youth parked cars as a fundraiser during the Azalea Festival, they raised $1,140 with Thrivent’s help! Thrivent also helps Habitat for Humanity and matched funds for the youth Super Bowl Subs. Both last year and this year’s Yard Sale funds will be matched as well. In these times of economic stress, Thrivent’s pledged helping hand is more valuable to us all. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a faith-based membership organization called to improve the quality of life for its members, their families, and their communities by providing unparalleled solutions that focus on financial security, wellness and caring in others. If you have any questions about Thrivent, you may call Kevin Clamser (612-5284) or Laurie Barkley (2979427). These are two of the many members of St. Paul’s who have been involved with Thrivent for several years and will give you the answers you seek about this great organization.

FINANCIAL OPEN DISCUSSION Every month, St Paul’s is offering a financial open discussion. We will start with a devotional then an examination of what is happening with our economy and most importantly working through any questions that you may have. Along with his word, God often uses other Christians to help us work through our questions. All questions are welcome – let’s come together and help each other through these difficult times! We will meet at St. Paul’s on May 4 at 9:00 a.m.

FROM EMILY CLAMSER Happy Easter! I am sure that you must think I am crazy. Many of you are thinking Easter was April 12, and by the way, why are Easter decorations still up! Well, it is still Easter. Easter seems to be the one season that we want to hurry up and be over with. Think about it. We can not wait for Thanksgiving to be over so we can begin decorating for Christmas! My neighbors put their decorations up on Thanksgiving Day! We can not wait for Jesus to be born, so we have Advent to help us prepare. But what about Easter? I know, I know, your thinking we have Lent and your right. Lent, allows us the time to add a discipline to our life or experience "forty days of resisting a temptation." Then, we have Holy Week, and we experience the joys and sorrows of those days. Finally, Easter arrives! He is risen. He has risen indeed! Alleluia! Then, it is quick down with the decorations and Easter is over. But it is not over. There are 50 amazing days! If you ask our youth and some adults, how many days are in Lent they will quickly tell you 40, but for Easter they will respond with one day. So, in our society that is so quick to jump to the next holiday or season. I am asking us all to linger at Easter. The best part of the Easter Story is the 50 days that happened after Jesus rose because we finally find out the answers to the questions- What happened? What does it mean? Now, what should we do? The mystery is solved. It all becomes clear. We, along with the disciples, learn how to Pass on the Faith. Happy Easter!

BISHOP’S SCHOOL Congratulations to Kevin Higdon on his acceptance to Bishop’s School! Kevin will be attending Bishop’s School on the Campus of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina, from June 2027. Kevin was chosen from a group of highly qualified nominees and St. Paul’s is honored to have Kevin represent us. A regional committee of representatives from the synods in Region 9 reviewed the nominations and selected Kevin along with only 39 other youth from across the Southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean. All candidates must submit an application, essay, and recommendations. During his week at Bishop’s school, Kevin will study theology, participate in discussions, fellowship, and learn more about ministry. If you would like to make a donation to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Bishop’s School Scholarship Fund to assist in defraying the $425.00 cost, please write “Bishop’s School Fund” in the memo section of your check. Together, we continue to Pass on the Faith.

MILESTONE MINISTRY Milestones have become a wonderful way for our congregation to mark our congregational milestones as well as our personal milestones. One of the milestones recently added is our AAA Disciple milestone. In the month of March, Nicky Grubbs, Louise Perkins, and Jack Ploehn were our AAA Disciples. Here are some of the testimonies for Louise Perkins: “Louise is only a phone call away to lend a helping hand for what ever is needed. She has been a leader with the beading of the Chrismons, a supporter for the Samaritans and many other wonderful activities. She lives the life of an AAA person.” “Louise always puts the needs of the church first and does it with a smile. Truly an AAA person.” Here are some of the wonderful testimonies given for Nicky Grubbs.

VBS

Here are some of the testimonies for Jack Ploehn: “For Jack there is no job too big or too small. Whether it is Co u nc i l President, S u n d a y s c h o o l teacher, or painting the youth room, Jack makes himself available for all the needs of our church.” “Jack Ploehn shows his love for our church and its members by the work he does for it! You can find him weeding, painting, hanging things, or taking the time to talk to our youth.” We are blessed to have so many AAA disciples at St. Paul’s! Take the time to affirm an AAA disciple. You will be glad that you did. Confirmation Milestone: Join us at the 11:00 service on Pentecost, May 31, as we celebrate the milestone of Confirmation with Avery Mills and Jessica Novak.
