Friday 5th February

Headteacher Update On Wednesday night we enjoyed a wonderful ‘Oscar’s After Party’. This event is part of the Hospitality and Catering course followed by our GCSE students. Invited guests, including staff and parents enjoyed a delicious three course meal hosted by the students themselves. They have been preparing for the event for some time and all day Wednesday they chopped and blended fruit and vegetables, whipped cream, marinated meat, prepared choux, puff and shortcrust pastry and baked delicious bread. The cutlery had been polished, the glasses were sparkling and the tables beautifully decorated in line with the Oscar’s theme. As guests we arrived to a drinks reception and were offered a choice of cocktails, Fuzzy Navel or Cranberry Crush. We were then escorted to our tables and offered water and wine. Our starters arrived and I had chosen choux balls filled with smoked salmon and crème fraiche and these were delicious, delicately flavoured and perfectly prepared. Others enjoyed butternut squash soup and plaited bread – the general consensus was that the soup was just the right amount of ‘spicy’. The third choice for starter was mackerel pate with melba toast and although not many at my table seemed to have ordered this, many of us did salivate as we eyed up Miss Maisey’s plate. She confirmed that it was delicious. More water (and wine) arrived and then the main course was served. All kept on track by our very efficient, approachable and outwardly calm General Manager, Elise McAlpine and Restaurant Manager, Martine Loveridge. My main dish was fragrant chicken curry served with rice and naan bread and it was perfectly cooked and tasted fabulous. The vegetarian dish enjoyed by Miss Jones looked huge and very tasty but most of us (with the exception of the vegetarians) stared in awe at the Beef Wellington served with dauphinoise potatoes and a vegetable parcel. (People were still talking about it the next day). Before dessert we were invited into the kitchen to watch Richard flambé the Crepes Suzette. Under significant pressure from an expectant audience, Richard successfully – after quite a lot of Cointreau, had flames rising majestically over the 4 pans. Dessert didn’t disappoint and my lime torte with beautiful and delicate tuille decoration (made by Sam DurrellLoveday) was both visually and gastronomically a little piece of heaven. Others enjoyed quite a boozy Crepe Suzette or a very impressive Baked Alaska. The evening was fun, relaxed and enjoyable and ended with coffee, tea and brownies. Cont..

The teamwork, effort, care and passion for doing a great job oozed from the whole team. They worked so well together and really grafted for one another. On the night there were those whose front of house duties meant they were on show all the time and not once did they fail to impress. ‘Backstage’ the chefs and kitchen staff worked so hard to ensure everyone had the best of evenings. Sometimes being behind the scenes means you don’t get as much praise – but the team approach was so strong that everyone knew they had a special role to fulfil. Thank you to the parents and family members for their support in the preparation of the event (I’m sure you have tasted many of the recipes at home!). Thanks also to staff who came along to support the event and very special thanks to Mrs Tudor and her team of supporters, Mrs Sullivan, Mrs Griffiths and Mrs Fraser who helped the evening be so successful. The students will remember their participation in this for some time to come and I am sure it will also help them achieve well in their GCSE. Year 11 GCSE Hospitality Dinner - Wednesday 3rd Feb As part of their GCSE exam the Hospitality group is required to plan and run an event in school. This year's group decided to hold an Oscars After Party including a red carpet, walk of fame and a four course VIP dinner. Guests were greeted with cocktails in the reception area and then called through for dinner by the Manager, Elise. They cooked choux balls filled with smoked salmon and crème fraiche, mackerel pate with melba toast and butternut squash soup for starters. The main course was a choice of beef wellington , fragrant chicken curry or vegetable lasagne. The meal was rounded off with a visit to the kitchen to watch Richard flambé crepe suzette. Other dessert choices were lime torte with a tuille biscuit or baked Alaska. Finally coffee or tea were served with gold coated chocolate brownies. We were allowed to use the Cucina kitchens to serve our main courses, and the chef team, led by Head Chef Claire, did an excellent job. The food was served by the students, led by restaurant manager Martine Loveridge. The other team members were: Assistant Manager - Leah Sous chef - Freddie Starter chefs - Amanda, Lewis and Andrew Main course chefs - Harrison, Callum, Kane and Jamie Dessert chefs - Sam, Liam and Abby Sommeliers - Hannah and Lauren Many thanks to the staff who gave up their time to help with the event, Mrs Sullivan food technician, who organised all the shopping and ran around all day, Mrs Griffiths who was able to share her knowledge of restaurant service with the students, Mr Foster, Mrs Jackson-Jones, who returned from another school to help, Mrs Fraser who worked tirelessly doing the washing up all night, and Ms Chamberlain who returned to school to help out. Also many thanks to Peter and Debbie from Cucina without whom the event would not have been possible. Everyone involved worked hard from 8.50am until 9.30pm and apart from a few sore feet, they all enjoyed the experience. Mrs Tudor

Year 8 Indoor Athletics Fifteen of our Year 8s took part in a Bracknell Forest Indoor Athletics event on Friday at Bracknell Sports Centre. The event was the first round for the National School Games which was a great opportunity for the students to compete with high level athletes. The event consisted of individual races and team relays along with speed bounce, indoor shot, standing long jump, standing triple jump and vertical jump. Each student’s performance contributed to a team score, with the top boys team and top girls team then progressing to the next round. All our students did really well and gave their all throughout the day with some very good results. In the end Sandhurst came a respectable 4 th but we were within touching distance of the schools above us. All the students can be proud of their achievements and couldn’t have given any more effort. Well done to the whole team! The team: Jenna, Hollie, Aaliya, Olivia, Amy, Daisy, Bradley, Harrison, Weronika, Nisam, Sudhan, Kyle, Daisy, James & Max Thanks, James Martin

Work-Related Learning Year 10 Technology Challenge at O2 Headquarters, Slough A group of Year 10 students had the privilege of attending a technology event at O2 Telefonica last week. In teams, working with students from other schools and the staff of O2, their task was to create an app that they thought would be useful for everyday life. Following a morning of planning and building each team then took to the floor to showcase their product and sell its potential to a number of employees. The students showed real flair, creativity and enthusiasm and earned the highest praise of Mrs Fraser who accompanied them on the visit. Well done: Ben Aspinall, Oliver Tildesley, Latisha Gleghorn, Georgina Kettle, Chloe Slater, Hope Gaspar, Kiera Cherrington, Ash Balasingham, Louise Ankerson, Jack Gill, Amy Neve, Charlie Birch-Rose, James Blackman, Aisha Fazal and Danika Myclark. Year 7 Careers Education in citizenship This half term we have been working with Year 7 looking at the importance of education and how their results at GCSE will affect opportunities for post 16 learning. We have also considered different options and routes that they could follow after Year 11, including A Levels at sixth form, vocational courses at FE colleges and apprenticeships. Finally, we discussed youth employment and the legalities behind employment for young people under the age of 16, exploring how additional qualities and skills gained through part-time work are also extremely important to employers and universities. Year 11 Interview Techniques We have been running a number of workshops since January for Year 11 students to understand further the implications and expectations of interviews. We have discussed the importance of preparation and the need to explore common questions and rehearse possible answers. Students should make sure they research the companies they are applying to and ensure they understand the job role that is being advertised. Research is equally important when searching and applying to colleges and universities. Students should carefully consider the content of individual courses as modules can vary between institutions. It is also highly recommended that students attend open events for each establishment they are considering for further study. Open events are advertised on individual websites, the SDC careers room and in the school library. Reporting Calendar 2015-2016 You will be aware the school issues student progress reports at the end of each half term. However the second half of the Spring term is very short this year, effectively giving only four weeks between reports. It is clearly not sensible to issue reports so close to each other. Therefore instead of issuing six reports this year the school will issue five. The dates of these vary depending on the needs of each year group. Progress Report 1
