Purpose & Objectives The conference will provide practitioners with the most recent advances and information that will enhance knowledge, skills and performance in the evaluation and treatment of neurological disorders.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to: •• Describe pathophysiologic mechanisms of acute stroke and discuss new interventional treatments •• Discuss the guidelines for the prevention of stroke in patients with Transient Ischemic Attack and provide comprehensive and evidence-based recommendations •• Define the diagnostic criteria for migraine headaches and current recommendations for management and treatment options •• Examine new evidence in the causes of epilepsy, management strategies and optimizing existing treatments •• Review the treatment of intractable epilepsies like intractable partial seizures and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome •• Describe the clinical cognitive/memory evaluation and assessment guidelines used in the clinic setting to determine the degree of cognitive impairment •• Explain the clinical and pathological features of vertigo and discuss therapeutic management options

•• Discuss key issues and controversies in the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders in the primary care setting •• Discuss the latest information regarding the pharmacologic treatment of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease •• Explain how neurological rehabilitation can improve function, reduce symptoms and improve the wellbeing of patients with disorders of the nervous system •• Outline the highly specialized area of neuroscience nursing that collaborates using the latest clinical advances and technologies to provide tools and support for patients with neurological conditions in both the inpatient and outpatient care settings •• Discuss the evaluation and diagnosis of back pain, the main causes, management and treatment strategies, and interdisciplinary interventions •• Identify the latest neuroscientific breakthroughs and advances in understanding the human mind and brain

Occupational Therapy The Board of Occupational Therapy Practice does not pre-approve continuing education course offerings, but will accept a continuing education activity when they are planned and conducted for occupational therapists and the continuing education activity relates to the practice of occupational therapy. Each professional is responsible for his or her own certification.

Nurses licensed in Iowa and California: This activity was planned and developed in accordance with the continuing education standards of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Iowa Board of Nursing and the California Board of Nursing will honor ANCC continuing education credits for face-to-face programs held outside Iowa and California, or for ANCC-approved online-recorded courses taken in a self-study format.
