Friday 20th November 2015 NEWS UK Youth Parliament On Friday 13 November, Members of the UK Youth Parliament sat in the House of Commons to debate the result of the national ‘Make Your Mark’ ballot. This was a ballot that Wilmslow High School took part in, which surveyed all students and asked them to vote for the issue that they felt was most important (from a list of ten). The top five issues from this ballot were debated on the day, and I was lucky enough to be there, as a Member of Youth Parliament for Cheshire East. The previous day we travelled down to London, stopping at a café in Southwark to have lunch. Then, we checked into the hotel, and went out to explore London. One river cruise later, we had tea and went back to the hotel to prepare for the big day that would follow. On Friday morning, we were up bright and early to get a taxi to the House of Commons. Once we were thorough security, we were escorted into the main hall where we had a chance to take in the surroundings. It was very surreal to be somewhere that I had only ever seen on television. Shortly after, we were taken into the Chamber. I was lucky enough to sit in the chair of Dennis Skinner (which made my day), for all of the debates. Whilst I did not speak, listening to the points made by other members was absolutely amazing, and I am pleased to say that we have voted for ‘ending discrimination’ and ‘mental health’ as our campaigns for the next year.

Wilmslow students awarded for community spirit Wilmslow’s first ever Community Awards, organised by the Wilmslow Business Group to celebrate remarkable people in the local community, took place last night at the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow. An enthusiastic audience came to see the eleven awards given to some extremely worthy winners. BBC North West Tonight’s Annabel Tiffin hosted the event which was hailed as a “great celebration of community spirit”. Each category was judged by a core team made up of Dr Pullé, Keith Purdom (Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council) and Catherine Mackenzie (Chairman of Wilmslow Business Group). They were then joined by each relevant category sponsor to help with their decision. Joe McBride (left) won ‘Youth and Student of the Year’ award for his involvement in the SK9 Youth Group, being selected as Cheshire East Youth Member of Parliament and planning construction of Wilmslow High School garden entry at the Tatton RHS Show. Imogen Young-Lee (below), won‘Young Hero Award’ for her work with the Carers Trust. This category was especially difficult for the judges. Each of the young people who was nominated has an extraordinary story to tell of overcoming tremendous odds or illness to raising money for charity. They received a welldeserved standing ovation when they were all invited up onto the stage. Lauren Wild (below) and former student, Samantha James were also shortlisted in this category. Catherine Mackenzie, Chairman of Wilmslow Business Group said, “The Community Awards evening organised so excellently by the Wilmslow Business Group was a heart warming event. It was great to celebrate and recognise so many outstanding people in our community.” As well as our students, Wilmslow High School teachers were also recognised at the Awards. A number of high school staff were

nominated and shortlisted for the Teacher of the Year Award, though the winner was Mrs Stone from Lindow Primary School.

Councillor Keith Purdom, Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council, said “The nominees for teacher of the year, mainly from their students, remind us of the inspirational role of our teachers, and the nominees for Young Hero highlight some amazing young people, not only overcoming difficulties in their own lives but fund raising amazing amounts of money for others.” Mr Vincent said “Listening to the nominees’ achievements and contributions made me feel very proud to be part of the Wilmslow community. This excellent event really highlighted the huge number of young people, adults, groups and businesses who are determined to make a difference, in their own unique way.”

MFL girls can debate..motion passed! Last week, 5 of our MFL A level students took part in the very prestigious annual Modern Languages North Schools’ Debating Competition. Having to debate motions such as “being extraordinary is easy” (try doing that in English!?) in French, German and Spanish against the region’s top schools was a challenge to which our girls rose. They performed superbly and won 5 out of 6 debates across all three languages. Due to a peculiar scoring system and one very “debatable” rule in particular, the girls unfortunately did not progress to the semi-finals. We, however, could not have been more proud and thank them for their immense commitment shown to MFL.

Careers Fair Last week’s Careers Fair proved to be a successful and well attended event. Our Years 10 and 11 students were encouraged to investigate the options available to them after their GCSE examinations and many used the opportunity to speak to representatives from our local Further Education colleges, Cheshire Police and the Fire and Rescue service, the Armed Services and several apprenticeship providers. Our Sixth Form Team attended too, particularly to answer questions from Year 10 students and their parents. 3

Year 10 Work Experience Presentation Last week at a meeting in the school hall, a presentation was given on the reasons why the school sets such a high value on work experience and what we hope our students will learn from the opportunity. The slide show explained the processes required for completing a self-placement form and how the school will help those students who find it difficult to access a placement themselves. The presentation finished with 4 Year 11 students, Katie Barnett, Ruby Chauhan, Joe Saks and James Darroch explaining what they had done during their week in June 2015 and the tasks they had enjoyed. If you were not able to be present, please click here to view the presentation: http://tinyurl.com/omj97fp A reminder too, that the £10 contribution requested should be handed in at the Hub as soon as possible. Weather conditions: procedures for unexpected school closures With cold weather forecast we would like to remind parents/ carers and students about our procedures in the case of school closure. In the event of there being any reason that necessitates an unexpected school closure, this information will be published on the school website, sent by email and Twitter, and broadcast on a number of local radio stations. The Cheshire East website has a winter in Cheshire East page which links to school closures. A list of school closures will be published and updated on this page. The relevant page on the Cheshire East website is: http://tinyurl.com/p2l9ha5

Drama and theatre studies visit On Wednesday 18th November the Sixth Form drama and theatre studies students went to watch a production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester. It was a very well performed production, with outstanding acting, and surprise appearances from real animals such as a rat and a live puppy on the stage. The main theme in the production was living the life of an autistic person in a society that misunderstood the condition. The production’s comical style encouraged the audience to think about the way in which we approach autism in our everyday lives. It was a joyous and brilliant production mixed with beauty and wonder, and if I had to recommend any play it would definitely be “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”. Written by Matthew Smith (Year 12). Progress update This half term there will be plenty of feedback for parents on how our students are progressing. Year 10 Indicators went out last week, and indicators will be going out for Year 8 and Year 9 later in the term, as well as full reports for Year 12 and Year 13 students. Full reports for Year 11 students are going out today. Please can we have reply slips back by Friday 27th November. Advice for our parents Some of our parents have asked what they can do to support their sons and daughters. We would suggest that you make sure that your son or daughter is talking to their teachers about ways in which they can improve further. Below is some advice from our teachers about what successful learning looks like at this stage of Year 11 for our students: • • • • • • • •

Give us your best – every lesson, every day, every homework Make sure that you’re not expecting the teacher to do the work for you Take action on our feedback Ask for revision tips and take opportunities to improve your revision technique Ask for help when you need it You should be revising now Remember that every piece of work that you do is preparing you for your exams Have attendance of at least 95%

Students attend Oxfam World Shapers Launch Event 20 students from Wilmslow High School joined 60 students from Poynton High, Middlewich High and Knutsford Academy at AstraZeneca Alderley Park Conference Centre last week for a day of learning and interaction. Students were there to develop their understanding of the human impact of climate change, and to be inspired and supported to take action about this important issue. Liz Newbon, Education and Youth Advisor from Oxfam said “Climate change is already having a huge impact on millions of people all over the world, making it an urgent issue to resolve. Friday’s event provided a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn and think critically about the human impact of climate change, as well as to consider what action can be taken. A big well done to all the students involved!”

Online support for students We have been successful in our application for funding from the ‘Big Lottery’ to roll out a new initiative called Zumos: a website which will provide ‘first step’ professional support for students. Zumos™ gives pupils a sense of empowerment when dealing with their emotional and behavioural problems. It is endorsed by CAMHS, and OFSTED recently highlighted Zumos™ as being one of the most intuitive methods of supporting emotional wellbeing. The website provides pupils with expert and peer reviewed motivational support and vocal recordings which can be anonymously accessed by students, with further support information in the form of web links, helplines, suggested reading, books and videos, all of which have been passed through a due diligence procedure. Schools are able to see anonymised, statistical information on what pupils are accessing and all the information is fully controlled by the school. Once anonymously logged in, users can listen to recordings from leading counsellors and practitioners covering a wide variety of topic areas. Topics that students can access through Zumos™ are extensive and age group specific. These areas are regularly updated to provide the latest form of support. In addition, new topics are added by the Zumos team regularly to address any current trends in student wellbeing. This new resource has been launched in assemblies this week and will be available for use from Monday 23rd November. If you have any further questions please contact your child’s Student Manager or Head of House. The one minute guide provides a more detailed explanation and students will be able to access Zumos™ from both the VLE and school website. SPORT Badminton Our U16 girls and boys badminton teams were in action on Thursday, playing in the local round of the School Games competition. The girls team finished in 4th position overall while the boys finished in 1st place and have now qualified for the county finals. Rugby The senior rugby team continued their run of good form beating St Ambrose 22 – 15 in the semi final of the Cheshire Cup on Wednesday. They will now play at the AJ Bell Stadium on 19th December before Sale Sharks’ match against Castres. Football The U15 boys’ football team won 2-0 against Compton House on Tuesday in the 3rd round of the ESFA cup on Tuesday while the U13s exited their ESFA competition following a narrow 1-0 defeat against Elton High School. Our U16 hockey team took part in the England Hockey National Northern semi finals on Thursday, but despite some impressive performances in the early games against Hill House and Loreto they eventually lost out to a very strong Arnold side.

Tennis The U15 girls’ tennis team played in the Midlands Regional finals at Tipton Sports Academy on Monday. The team, Olivia French, Ellie Aldrich, Jessica Purdy and Freya Hogg, played against Bedford Girls’ School in their opening fixture, winning 3 singles matches and 1 doubles match in a 4 - 2 victory. Qualifying for the final, the girls came up against Hagley Roman Catholic School. Some impressive play in the singles matches led to Wilmslow taking a 3 – 1 lead into the doubles. A further victory in the first of the doubles matches meant that Wilmslow were crowned Midlands Champions and will now represent the region in the National UK finals in Bolton on the 5th and 6th December. The finals will see Wilmslow come up against the winners from the other three regional events, Kirkham Grammar School, Millfield School and Culford School.

NOTES Safeguarding concern The police have alerted us to two separate incidents that have occurred in the Wilmslow area. The incidents are thought not to be linked; however, it is always worth reminding ourselves, and in particular the students, to be vigilant whilst walking to and from school. Please can you speak with your son or daughter and remind them of the importance of staying in groups and not walking home alone. Also to remain on well-lit footpaths (as the nights get darker) and where possible, keeping to busier routes. If, at any point, they are concerned they must report any issues immediately to Student Services (if in the locality of the school), or a nearby responsible adult or they should contact the police. For more information from Wilmslow.co.uk please click on this link: http://tinyurl.com/p63hecc Year 11 revision strategy sessions This initiative has been introduced as a result of the feedback students provided on tutor review day. A number of students have requested practical help to improve their revision techniques. Sixth Form Information: Some of our parents have been asking for more information on ALPS targets ALPS What does ALPS stand for? A-level Performance Systems How are the ALPS targets generated? ALPS uses a student’s average points score at GCSE and considers what students across the country with an identical points score went on to achieve at AS and A-level. We use the top 10% of these achievements as targets for our own students which gives them a high degree of challenge. Do other schools or colleges use ALPS targets? Yes – currently most state schools with sixth forms in England are using ALPS. Why have you started using ALPS? Our students are aspirational in what they want to achieve and where they want to take their careers. We want to challenge each student to achieve their very best during their time in the sixth form and feel that ALPS offers the right degree of challenge to allow our students to achieve this. What if a target is unrealistic or too easy? Can it be adjusted? Yes – we will adjust a target if we feel it isn’t providing a challenge or is unrealistic. If a student has concerns about their target they should discuss this with me. What if a student falls below a target? This is not unusual. In fact, the majority of students will be working towards their targets during Year 12 and Year 13. It certainly does not mean that a student is not working hard, but it may mean that there are areas of their learning that we can help them with. Where students are below target they will enter a tiered monitoring system and parents will be informed of this. This ensures that you know that form tutors, the sixth form team and class teachers will be supporting our students to hit their targets and get to the root of any learning issues. Any further questions? Please contact Mr Tunmore, Head of Sixth Form: [email protected] Sixth Form Information: Folder Feedback Week • During the week commencing Monday 23rd November we will be holding a folder feedback week during form time. Students will be encouraged to self-evaluate their own folders and discuss these with their tutors to ensure that they are ‘revision ready’ prior to the mock examinations. • A folder ‘clinic’ will run in our sixth form learning area during form time for any students who are experiencing difficulties with organisation or would like some additional support with how to prepare revision notes. • During this week, students will have the opportunity to share with us examples of organisation and feedback that they are proud of so that we can share these with other students and teachers. 11

Appeal The Great North Air Ambulance Service operates three helicopters, 365 days a year, across the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. Crews respond to around 1,000 call outs each year and on board their aircraft are specialist trauma doctors and paramedics, who bring accident and emergency expertise to the scene. We are collecting plastic bottle tops on behalf of the Air Ambulance Service. These can then be resold to a company that makes surfaces for children’s playgrounds to raise money for this great cause. Please can you collect blue, green and red bottle tops that would otherwise be thrown away for this worthwhile cause? There will be a box for students to deposit bottle tops in the Wellbeing Hub office.
