“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” - Mother Theresa

The View with Lisa and Nikki “We weren’t just a family on Sundays. We were a family every single day.” - Eddie DeBartolo Jr., HOF Speech. Our father’s NFL career was nothing short of spectacular. So, his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this past August was the ending his football career deserved. When he finally took the stage and joined the greats that came before him, he accepted the award the same way he spent his entire ownership - thinking of those around him. On and off the field, my dad knew the importance of helping those around him achieve greatness. Whether it was helping players finish their college degrees or caring for them when they were injured, he knew they were more than just numbers on jerseys running around on the field - they were family. During his acceptance speech, he said, “We’ve got to do all we can to look after one another and take care of one another.” He understood that the team stretched far beyond the football field - everyone who was part of the organization, from the groundskeepers to the executive assistants to the bus drivers were responsible for the team’s success, or as they called it the “Camelot” days. He may have won five Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, but his work off the field is never done. Today, he continues to bring this same philosophy to the Tampa Bay community. He sits on the board of directors at Moffitt Cancer Center, supports us with the DeBartolo Family Foundation and cofounded Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School, which just received its seventh consecutive straight “A” from the Florida Department of Education and has a waiting list of more than 700. We could go on, but we would be here for a while.

No matter our roles in our day-to-day lives, we can all do more to care for those around us. We share a community and if we all look for opportunities to be better team players, we can accomplish more than we ever thought possible. The sky is truly the limit when we understand the value of teamwork. And speaking of teams, we are really proud of our mom, Candy, who put together a pretty awesome team at Sacred Pepper, the popular new restaurant in North Tampa. Sacred Pepper opened in April and we were honored to present our Spirit of Humanity Award recipient Troop Rewards at the restaurant’s VIP Charity Night. Our family is grateful for everyone’s support of Sacred Pepper and hope you stop by and visit sometime soon. We truly had an amazing year and are excited to share a little about what the Foundation has been up to in this newsletter. Our All Star Charity Gala welcomed several new celebrities and moved to a new venue, the Marriott Waterside. With your help, we raised a record $1.1M and look forward to returning to the Marriott Waterside on March 25th for the 14th All Star Charity Gala. We gave 23 organizations over $120,000 through our Community Grant Program and we honored 47 high school seniors with scholarships. A new partnership with Bill Curie Ford & The Mustang Club of Tampa raised over $30,000 for our Teachers Back-2-School Supply Giveaway program, which with the support of Rooftop Eve and the Eddie V’s White Hot Summer Night Party, helped more than 600 teachers with supplies for their classrooms. Thank you again for your continued support of our Foundation and our Family!

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s

Annual Christmas Luncheon 13th ALL STAR CHARITY GALA

T

he DeBartolo Family Foundation was excited for the 13th All Star Charity Gala’s venue change to the beautiful Marriott Waterside hotel in Tampa.

Soap opera stars, athletes, actors, musicians, chefs and local personalities were seated among over 700 guests that helped raise a record $1.1million. The ballroom transformed with white drape, chains and black carpet, allowed the guests to enjoy a delicious ribeye dinner and dessert provided by Eddie V’s. Miggs & Swig’s JoJo & former N’ Sync member, Joey Fatone emceed this year’s live auction raising over $175,000 on items including a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame which sold twice, VIP trips to Napa Valley & Albany, Bahamas, a Super Bowl 51 package and the sought after trip to the ever popular Fourth of July extravaganza at the DeBartolo family ranch in Kalispell, MT.

The DeBartolo Family Foundation partners with the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office and Dee Solomon to host the annual Christmas luncheon each December. The event benefits the Family Enrichment Center, who has considerable impact on the lives of economically disadvantaged and minority families. Each year, fifteen families are treated to a traditional holiday meal along with both the children and the caretakers being surprised with gifts. Continuing the tradition of paying tribute to Freddie Solomon who lost his battle with cancer in 2012, a heartwarming slideshow is shown and gives those who did not know him a better idea of the amazing man he was; and for those who had the honor of knowing him, it allows them time to reflect on the loving, kind and generous man that he was. Our 2016 luncheon will be held on December 10th at Higgins Hall at St. Lawrence Church. If you would like to support the event, please contact Melissa Johnson at 813.964.8302 or via email [email protected].

To end the evening, the water view window hallway was transformed into an after party where guests danced to DJ Michelle Pesce, were entertained by Joey Fatone singing on stage & snacked on chicken tenders, french fries and milkshakes provided by PDQ.

Lucky Dog Casino Night (2015) & Bubbly & Benedicts Brunch (2016) benefiting Frankie’s Friends were vastly different events but both successful in their own right, with proceeds nearing almost $200,000. District 3 held the Casino night which featured professional Texas hold’em, blackjack and 3-card poker dealers, roulette, an 8-foot craps tables with guests gambling fun money for prizes. Eddie V’s Prime Seafood graciously hosted the amazing Bubbly & Benedicts Brunch that featured Mimosas & Tito’s Bloody Mary Bar with a delicious buffet style brunch that was served to guests as they strolled through the kitchen. Lisa DeBartolo served as the honorary chairperson of both events which had two presenting sponsors, the DeBartolo Family Foundation and Candy and Eddie DeBartolo. Each year Fox 13’s Russell Rhodes has emceed and helped raise thousands of dollars as the live auctioneer selling items such as private suites for a Lightning game & tickets to the upcoming Super Bowl games.

Frankie’s Friends is named after the DeBartolo family’s beloved greyhound Frankie and is dedicated to finding cures and saving pets with cancer and other lifethreatening diseases.

Each year hundreds of guests attend the event in support of Frankie’s Friends which was founded in Tampa in 1999. This unique & much needed organizaiton assists financially strapped families with veterinary bills for emergency and specialty treatments. Named after the DeBartolo family’s beloved greyhound Frankie, the organization funds treatments provided at one of the BluePearl Veterinary Partners hospitals in Tampa, Brandon, Clearwater, and Sarasota.

The class of 2016 earned over $1.3 million collectively in scholarships, not including Bright Futures, and all of them had post-secondary plans in place. They earned hundreds of college credits through dual enrollment, a cost savings of tens of thousands of dollars in tuition. Three seniors earned Associate’s Degrees and over half of the graduating class was in the National Honor Society. Over 60% had a weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher. We are nearing our maximum school enrollment of 600 students, and have a waiting list of over 600 more students for 9th11th grades for the 2016-17 school year. Our increased enrollment has moved us up to Class 4A in Athletics. We have 17 sports for boys and girls, and continue to work towards a new sports facility - a HOME - that will showcase our students’ athletic talents and bring our community together under the friday night lights. Our Development Director, Judy Anderson (former Annual Giving Manager at the Florida Aquarium), will lead our multi-million dollar Athletic Facility Capital Campaign which we plan to launch during this school year. If you would like to learn how you can help, please contact Judy at [email protected] or 813-971-5600.

FOUNDATION SPOTLIGHT

Troop Rewards Hi! I am Candy. I opened a restaurant in North Tampa called Sacred Pepper. I would love to personally invite you all to this wonderful experience of eating and socializing. We opened our doors five months ago and since that time we have created a wonderful experience. When I go to a restaurant I want to be greeted with a smile, eat yummy food, and enjoy a great glass of wine or a great specialty drink. You will definitely experience all of this and more at Sacred Pepper. you will find the atmosphere is fun, happy and a great place to meet new people or catch up with old friends. We offer a Social Soirée, our version of “Happy Hour”. It was designed around how I love to have a great glass of wine and share some of the delightful appetizers that I love. It’s a place to unwind and just be you. This cool, contemporary and fun restaurant is a place where everyone is welcome! I promise you will feel like a part of the Sacred Pepper family from the moment you walk in the door. I have always believed everything that happens around the table is sacred and now I have many tables to share with all of you. I hope to see you around one of them soon!

Troop Rewards understands the unique stresses and separation dynamics placed on families during deployment and they go above and beyond to compensate for the time apart. The organization was founded on the mission of providing RnR Recovery Vacations and other rewards for returning U.S. Armed Forces and their families at no cost to help them re-adjust to civilian life at home. As an owner of a suite at the Sandpearl Resort and Spa in Clearwater, Florida, Founder, Tom Burkett, received an overseas call from a PFC serving in Iraq for over a year. Inquiring about the cost for a 2 night stay, Mr. Burkett said “How can I charge you anything when you have spent the last year risking your life for my freedom”. Since then, Mr. Burkett has offered his suite every year for charity events which help support the troops and partners with other hotels to offer their unbooked or vacant properties to Troop Rewards. Helping the military community reintegrate back to civilian life has become a permanent part of what Troop Rewards has become and the DeBartolo Family Foundation recognized Troop Rewards for their commitment to this. For more information about Troop Rewards, please visit their website trooprewards.org.

The DeBartolo Family Foundation organized its 6th Annual Back-2School Supply Giveaway and provided supplies for over 600 Bay Area teachers. With the amount of teachers doubling this year, we had to take over Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School and have the teachers shop for their supplies. All of the gracious teachers’ classrooms were stocked with backpacks, pens, paper, tissues, hand sanitizer, crayons, calculators and many other much needed supplies! If you are interested in requesting supplies for the 2017-18 school year, please check our website for details.
