Fort Calgary’s Brand Fort Calgary is the symbolic heart and hub of the community. From its majestic and sweeping vantage point, Fort Calgary represents the actual genesis of the city that surrounds it today. It is the authentic lens through which Calgary’s history is interpreted and presented to frame the values, codes of conduct and distinctive character that spread into every facet of today’s society, culture and commercial development. For those who cherish the significance of authenticity and the relevance of roots, “The Fort” is the enduring opportunity to understand, touch and experience the birthplace of Calgary’s character, spirit and deeply enshrined values.

Chairman and CEO Report On behalf of the Fort Calgary Board of Directors and staff we are pleased to present the 2012 Annual Report and Financial Statements. In 2012, Calgarians celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede and Calgary became Canada’s 2012 Cultural Capital. During this celebration year, Fort Calgary felt it was important to remember the Blackfoot culture that thrived here for thousands of years - long before the arrival of the North West Mounted Police and the Calgary Stampede. In partnership with Calgary 2012, Fort Calgary’s 2012 temporary exhibit “Before the Stampede – Calgary’s Cultural Context” examined the slaughter of the Plains bison through the art of Blackfoot artist, Adrian Stimson. A key element of the exhibit was the highly successful Re-Herd installation which invited visitors to paint over 5,000 miniature cast bison and place them on a map of Alberta. In 2012, in partnership with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, the RiverWalk through Fort Calgary was completed and construction began on the 6th St. S.E. edge and the Bow River Bridge. Plans are under way for a traverse across the Elbow River that is scheduled for completion in 2013. These are key elements of the Fort Calgary Master Plan and we are grateful to the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation for their continued support. Our common vision ensures the protection, use and understanding of Fort Calgary’s significance in the evolution of Calgary. On Canada Day 2012, the Government of Canada announced a $4.0M contribution to Fort Calgary’s MAKE History Capital Campaign. The Campaign is proceeding well and the first phase of the project has been approved for construction in 2013. When complete all of these improvements will position Fort Calgary as a major park, accessible to all Calgarians, in the newly revitalized East Village. Fort Calgary’s future is exciting and bright. Our success is the result of our supporters, partners, volunteers, fellow Board members and staff. We are very proud and honoured to be part of such a dedicated and committed group of people.
