[ working to keep food safe ] Consumers worldwide are becoming more aware of the quality and origin of the food they consume, and are demanding stricter regulations to protect their safety. Suppliers, wholesalers, and manufacturers have voluntarily increased product inspections to comply with regulatory and public pressure. We understand the demand this places on workflow and laboratory efficiency. Waters Corporation works with governments, research organizations, and industry partners to provide accurate, fast, and cost-effective solutions to help ensure a safe food supply.

MULTI-RESIDUE SCREENING

[ multi-residue screening ] DisQuE Dis p ersiv e Sam p l e Pre pa rat ion

T he number of pesticides and metabolites being monitored in food commodities worldwide is well over 1,000 targeted analytes. In response, laboratories are being asked to broaden their range of pesticide analysis, while management is demanding cost reductions. A new technique, “QuEChERS”, standing for Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe, is readily accepted by both the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC) International and the Committee of European Normalization (CEN) for the analysis of pesticide residues in food and agricultural products. QuEChERS is a simple and straightforward sample preparation technique for multi-residue screening. For a pesticide residue laboratory, multi-residue methods increase sample throughput, decrease sample turnaround time, and optimize analyst efficiency.

Solutions and kitted methods add value to your laboratory function by addressing the need for simple, easy-to-follow protocols that require very little training. DisQuE™ dispersive sample preparation is a wellproven, high-throughput sample preparation method for the analysis of a wide array of pesticides in fruit and vegetable samples* that can be used in any testing laboratory. T he benefits of Waters DisQuE dispersive sample preparation include:  Efficient, universal sample extraction method for a wide variety of complex matrices  Validated detection levels down to 10 ng/g (ppb)*  Convenient, ready-to-use sample preparation kit improves laboratory efficiency and workflow  Quality manufacturing guarantees a reliably clean, consistent product

targeted-RESIDUE analysis

[ Targeted-residue Analysis ] Public expectations for food quality have risen and our food supply is no longer taken for granted. As regulatory requirements increase, the focus is placed on rigorous testing and it becomes the laboratory's responsibility to meet the high demand for safe food.

T he benefits of a compound-specific assay include:  Reduced matrix effects and ion-suppression for LC/MS applications  Increased sensitivity by selectively removing unwanted matrix interferences

For many regulated food testing methods, the suitability for a particular assay is determined by the analyte selectivity. For the most challenging issues, the presence of interfering matrix elements can mask the analysis of the component of interest. Having confidence in the results is why many laboratories rely on analyte-specific methods. Targeted sample preparation techniques remove excess contaminants to yield clean, informative chromatograms.

 Improved instrument performance by maximizing system up-time  Enriched sample extracts for targeted compounds  Rugged and reproducible methods suitable for automation

Certified Sep-Pak®, Oasis®, and Sep-Pak SPE cartridges have unmatched performance and offer the most diverse sorbent choice and format to handle any food testing challenge.

Worldwide, government agencies have implemented guidelines for screening melamine and melamine-related compounds in foods, including infant formula and dairy products. T he maximum daily adult intake recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is set at 0.2 mg/kg (ppm) of body weight. Government agencies are in agreement and have set limits that reflect these guidelines. Melamine-tainted infant formula is of most concern because this can be the only source of nutrition for some infants. Many agencies have established zero tolerance policies to prevent adulteration of infant formulations. Working with government researchers around the globe, Waters strives to stay at the forefront of these important issues to provide the most effective solutions. By using Oasis and Sep-Pak SPE cartridges for sample preparation and the ACQUITY UPLC system, researchers have developed methods that exceed WHO expectations, reaching 30 µg/kg (ppb).

ERA's C ert ified Reference Mat erials

Regulations are becoming more rigorous and laboratory demands are increasing. T he methods used and created in testing facilities need to be robust and reproducible over the lifetime of the analysis.

T he word that best describes ERA’s Certified Reference Material standards is “true”. We prepare every standard with starting materials traced to NIST or the highest possible metrological authority, and we verify the preparation, production, and packaging via exhaustive in-house analyses. We analyze and test every lot for accuracy, precision, and stability. We scrutinize analytical data to make certain there are no unexpected problems with the standards, and then, only after all of that, we make them available to you. W hen you receive Certified Reference Material from ERA, you are looking for the truth. We guarantee that is what you will find.

All Waters manufacturing facilities are registered with the FDA and are ISO 9001:2000 certified. In 2006, as a continuous improvement towards quality, Waters manufacturing, research and development, and product development became ISO 13485:2003 compliant. T his assures that the entire process is strictly monitored and controlled over the lifetime of production. Unlike many suppliers, Waters controls all aspects of the production process. From base particle synthesis using raw materials, to ligand bonding and quality inspection of the final product, Waters manufacturing is accountable for every step of the process.
