In their only prior participation in the U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2008, Costa Rica lost all three of their opening-round matches. The only goal scored to date by Costa Rica in the U-17 Women’s World Cup was an equaliser struck by Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno against the eventual 2008 world champions Korea DPR. Las Ticas went on to lose that fixture 2-1. All previous host teams of the U-17 Women’s World Cup—namely New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago and Azerbaijan—were eliminated in the opening round.

Ghana’s third-place finish at the 2012 edition is the best performance by an African side at the U-17 Women’s World Cup. Ghana are one of four teams that have managed to keep three consecutive clean sheets in the competition, the others being Korea DPR, Japan and Nigeria. However, the Black Maidens hold the tournament’s overall invincibility record of 372 consecutive minutes played without conceding a goal. Furthermore, Ghana have achieved a total of six shutouts, more than any other side in the competition’s history. Three Ghanaians are among the four players who share the record for the most appearances by a single player in the U-17 Women’s World Cup, which is nine. They are Regina Antwi, Ellen Coleman and Sherifatu Sumaila, who each played nine games spanning the 2010 and 2012 editions. The fourth member of the quartet is Japan’s Yoko Tanaka (2008–2010).

Colombia’s only win in six attempts at the U-17 Women’s World Cup came during the 2012 edition, when they outmuscled the hosts Azerbaijan 4-0 on the opening matchday. In both of their previous outings, Colombia failed to get beyond the opening round. The first draw in the history of the U-17 Women’s World Cup involved Colombia, who tied 1-1 with Denmark on 29 October 2008. That same result was played out three hours later between Korea DPR and Ghana.

China PR are taking part in their second U-17 Women’s World Cup, having been eliminated at the group stage in the 2012 edition, when they collected one win, one draw and one defeat. In 2012 China PR were the only one of four debutant sides to win their opening match, having downed Uruguay 4-0. The Chinese teenagers made heavy weather of qualifying for the U-17 Women’s World Cup 2014. In the decisive play-off for third place at the continental finals, they trailed Thailand 2-1 until the fourth minute of stoppage time, when Wu Yue equalised. The young Steel Roses then prevailed in a penalty shoot-out to secure their place in Costa Rica.

Nigeria’s 11-0 drubbing of Azerbaijan in 2012 is the joint-biggest win posted in the U-17 Women’s World Cup, together with Korea DPR’s identical result over Gambia at the same edition. Six Nigerian players have taken to the field in both the U-17 Women’s World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, a tally matched only by Korea DPR. Chinwendu Ihezuo holds the record for the most goals scored in a single U-17 Women’s World Cup fixture, having struck five in the 11-0 victory over Azerbaijan in 2012. Another Nigerian netted the earliest goal in the tournament’s history: in 2008 Soo Adekwagh opened the scoring against Korea Republic after just 22 seconds.

History The first confederation to stage an age-group tournament for women was UEFA in 1997 with the European Women’s U-19 Championship. In a move to further promote the women’s game, FIFA followed suit with its own competition for young women. As was FIFA’s intention, the event has encouraged member associations to develop women’s football at youth level and to set up teams in younger age groups, including the U-13 and U-15 brackets. Moreover, the championship has also prompted the confederations to organise continental qualifying competitions. Eleven years after China hosted the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 1991, Canada provided the venue for the very first FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship, an event that brought together the world’s top youth sides and proved a resounding success both on the pitch and at the turnstiles. The tournament attracted no fewer than 295,133 spectators, an impressive average of 11,351 per game. Not surprisingly, the final drew the biggest crowd, as 47,784 fans flocked to Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium to see the USA become the first side to claim the world youth crown. Two years later it was Thailand’s turn to stage the event in a 12-team tournament that generated an overall attendance figure of 288,324. In 2006, the tournament was held in Russia when the age limit was raised from 19 to 20 years of age, paving the way for a new competition: the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, bringing women’s youth football in line with its male counterparts. The all-new women's world youth competition, the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, was launched in New Zealand in 2008 and was followed by Trinidad & Tobago in 2010, Azerbaijan in 2012 and Costa Rica in 2014. Sixteen teams take part in the event playing a total of 32 matches.

Facts to know about the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup The upcoming 4th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will take place in Costa Rica. The first edition was held in New Zealand in 2008, the second in Trinidad & Tobago in 2010 and the third in Azerbaijan in 2012. In the upcoming edition in Costa Rica the matches will be played in four different venues. All participants in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2014 were born on or after 1 January 1997.
In 2012 France became the first European team to win the tournament. Before 2012 the Asian teams Korea DPR (2008) and Korea Republic (2010) were the winners of the tournament.
In the last edition in Azerbaijan in 2012 Ghana was the first African team to reach the semi-finals (and third place).
To date 27 teams have played in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. For seven teams it will be their 4th appearance and have therefore never missed a FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup: Japan, Korea DPR, Germany, Nigeria, Canada, Ghana, and New Zealand.
23 players have played in both a FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup™. One of them, Mana Iwabuchi, became World Champion with Japan in 2011.
The fastest goal in a FIFA Women’s competition was scored in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2008 after 22 seconds by Nigeria’s Soo Adekwagh in the match against Korea Republic.
9.5% of the total goals scored in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup were scored by substitutes (34 out of 357).
Extra time was played in the final matches of both 2008 and 2010, the latter tournament also having to go to a penalty shoot-out. In the 2012 edition there was no extra time as per the laws of the game and instead after the 1:1 stalemate the game was decided by penalty shoot-out.
At least three goals were scored in 67.7% of all matches in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (65 out of 96).
Only one player has been present in three editions of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Ghana’s Ellen Coleman played six matches in 2012, three matches in 2010 and in 2008 was part of Ghana’s roster but did not play a single minute.
In all three previous editions the host nation teams have always been eliminated after the group stage.
Korea DPR, winners of the first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup edition in 2008, are the only team to have always reached the semi-finals. After their victory in New Zealand 2008 they were fourth in Trinidad & Tobago 2010 and runners-up in Azerbaijan 2012.

Description
The original concept was inspired by the movie ‘Bend it like Beckham’ which portrays a Sikh girl who breaks traditions and plays football in a girls’ team. The aspiration to bend the football around a defensive wall sparked the idea for the two upright curved supports holding up the globe in the shape of a football – a consistent feature amongst almost all of FIFA’s event trophies. The overall elegant and pure appearance of the Official Trophy is characteristic of the nature of how the game is played in this women’s age group.
