Note

Who we are… What we do… Where we are… & Why it matters! WHO WE ARE: The Great Start Collaborative of Charlevoix, Emmet, and Northern Antrim counties are made up of community leaders and organizations from each county that have a vested interest in Early Childhood Investment. We are representatives from business, health, education, human services, higher education, non-profit, court systems, philanthropy, and parents who are implementing a plan to address the needs of young children within our Northern Michigan Communities. WHAT WE DO: The mission of our collaborative is to engage multi-disciplinary partners and families to identify, plan and implement system change to strengthen families and improve child outcomes. Since 2012, one of our major priorities has been the implementation of the Strengthening Families Framework that promotes 5 Protective Factors to make families strong. Every event, project, or training addresses and builds these 5 Protective Factors in families: Parental Resilience; Social Connections; Knowledge of Parenting & Child Development; Concrete Support in Times of Need; and Social and Emotional Competence of Children. A few of our successes include: a fund development committee that (through grants and individuals) provided over 100 preschool scholarships to eligible children ages 3 – 5; a FreeCycle 4

Book Project that has distributed over 20,000 gently used books to local children; popular free events for parents such as a Halloween Costume Exchange, Early Childhood Networking Nights, Parenting Awareness Month Conference; and a nationally recognized campaign to strengthen families entitled “What Makes Your Family Strong?” www. whatmakesyourfamilystrong.org WHERE WE ARE: Charlevoix, Emmet & Northern Antrim Counties. The Great Start Collaborative holds meetings bimonthly on the third Tuesday in Boyne City from 9-11AM. If you are interested in attending, you can call us at 231.582.8070 or e-mail: [email protected]. Our Great Start Parent Coalition is led by a Parent Leadership Council that hosts free events, facilitates our FreeCycle Book Project, and assures that the parent voice is heard in our community. Check out the Parent Coalition facebook page for details: www.facebook.com/greatstart. WHY IT MATTERS: Whether you are a parent,

caregiver, educator, business owner, community planner, or simply a tax paying citizen, investing in early childhood affects you now and has a huge impact on the future of your community. It is a simple equation for a long term workforce and economic solution; early childhood investment equals a stronger, better educated workforce, and a socially and economically vibrant community. The State of Michigan has outlined four outcomes by which public investment in Early Childhood will be assessed: children born healthy; children healthy, thriving and developmentally on track from birth to third grade; children developmentally ready to succeed in school at the time of school entry; and children prepared to succeed in fourth grade and beyond by reading proficiently by the end of third grade. Join forces with the Great Start Collaborative of Charlevoix, Emmet, and Northern Antrim Counties, to change the lives of our children and families, and build a bright economic future for Northern Michigan. Maureen Hollocker is the director of the Great Start Collaborative of Charlevoix, Emmet, and Northern Antrim Counties in Michigan. CONTACT: [email protected] 231.582.8070. P

art of every thriving and quality community is an infrastructure that has many parts making it whole. One of those parts is an element that serves the people of the community. This aspect shows how we care and provide support for those less fortunate, how we build strength and character in our children and families and how we impart a sense of comfort and well being for those in the community. Most of us would think of this as part of a quality of life, and most of us would agree that for some that quality of life is not always so easy to grasp. Until we are confronted with something untold in our lives we rarely think about what might be needed if we had to get through a crisis, face a devastating illness or overcome some other calamity. Many families, hard working, responsible people are only a paycheck away from a financial disaster. A loss of a job or an illness can wreak untold havoc when suddenly bills can’t be paid and there is not enough money for food or to put gas in the car. When this happens, individuals and families have a wealth of human and social services that are part of the infrastructure that make up the fabric of our community - we are blessed in so many ways. Our communities in northern MI have a quality that is unequaled in most rural communities. We have good schools with exceptional community and school athletic facilities and a variety of community-based recreational and social opportunities. All of these provide our children with a potpourri of choices to help them develop academically, emotionally and physically. Baseball, soccer, skiing, football, golf, early childhood and parent activities, scouting, sailing, swimming, youth groups, faith groups, dancing, art, robotics, library services, debate, skateboarding all provide the opportunities for healthy outlets that allow them to participate in personal development activities and also provide an outlet for healthy, well intentioned adults to get involved to help shape our youth. We enjoy a strength that comes from supporting and giving to an incredible network of human/ social/health services. Agencies and organizations help to provide a safety net when members of our community face hard times. The economic crisis, from which we are still recovering, has birthed a number food pantries and direct assistance programs. Community groups and social service agencies

6

have created avenues to help families get what they need. The poverty that continues to grow among the working class, and the problems that come with it, are being met with an incredible network of programs and services that can respond to many needs or provide the emotional support and advocacy to find an easier path. This is a generous and kind community that supports and provides many programs and services to help people falling through the cracks. We can all be proud of the many ways our human/social service infrastructure works together to create a community-wide system to connect people with the services they need. For more information or to connect with agencies, programs and services please refer to the Resource list in this publication. Call one of the many organizations listed that can provide you with information and referral.

Vision and Hearing Screening Did you know the Health Department provides FREE vision screening for children as young as 3 years of age, and FREE hearing screening for children as young as 6 months?

Recent legislation has changed the entry age.

2015-16 School Year

A child who resides in a public school district or public school academy providing kindergarten may enroll if the child is at least 5 years of age on September 1, 2015.

Not only is a vision test required to enter kindergarten, but early detection of a problem can help to prevent permanent hearing or vision loss later on.

If the child is not age eligible for kindergarten enrollment per the guidelines specified above, but will be five years old by December 1st, the child’s parent or legal guardian must notify the school district. Parent or legal guardian retains the sole discretion to enroll their child in kindergarten through written notification that must be submitted to the local school district by June 1. Please contact your local school district for more informaton. - State of Michigan: Act. No. 198, Effective 6/26/12

Look What I Can Do! What are your child’s behaviors telling you?

The Health Department invites you to find out. Have you ever wondered if your young child is having difficulty with speech, emotional development, social skills, physical coordination or problem solving? It can be difficult to know for sure, especially for first-time parents. A developmental screening tool provides an opportunity to spot and address problems before they inhibit a child’s development. The Health Department in collaboration with Great Start offers an online screening tool to help parents assess their child’s development. The Ages & Stages questionnaire: • Is confidential • It helps parents and caregivers know what to expect • It helps build new skills • It identifies developmental concerns • It is online, so you can use it from the comfort of home anytime • It is FREE All responses are reviewed carefully and personalized follow-up is provided at no charge.  Each session takes only a few minutes but the results can make a lifetime of difference for your child.
