Elementary Challenge - Workplace Safety Presentation Details Document Description: As a Team and using the provided workplace example (Fast food restaurant) (a) identify and label the hazards in the Fast food restaurant, and (b) choose two (2) of the hazards and prepare a safety action plan and (c) prepare, in advance, a 8 to 10 minute presentation on your safety action plans.

Key Concepts: 1. Every workplace has potential hazards that should be identified. 2. Every person can take proactive steps to prevent injuries or illnesses in his or her workplace. 3. Once hazards are identified and prevention strategies implemented, they can be used to make the workplace safer.

Definition: What Is a Hazard? A hazard is any situation, condition or thing that may be dangerous to the safety or health of workers. Basically, it is anything that can cause an injury or illness. • Some hazards can be acute – they have an immediate effect, such as being hit by a truck. • Other hazards are considered chronic – repeated exposures, over time, can eventually cause an effect, such as hearing loss after repeated overexposure to noise.

Preparation: Make copies of: (a) Presentation Details document (one per student), and (b) Safety Action Plan sheet (one per student and copy for presentation), and (c) Floor map (one per student and one for presentation).

Instructions: 1.

Review the floor map for the Fast food restaurant (ensure each team member has a copy of the Fast food restaurant floor plan.

2. 3. 4.

PRINT the floor plan. Label the hazards in each area of the Fast food restaurant from the list provided. PRINT copies of the safety action plan (one per team member and one for presentation).

5. 6.

Create a safety action plan for two (2) hazards identified. Create a presentation (8 to 10 minutes) on the two (2) safety action plans.

Elementary Challenge - Workplace Safety Presentation Details Document Overview: In some companies, employees (safety team) are assigned to review the work and layout of the company for any potential hazards. Once the hazards have been identified, the safety team develops a safety action plan designed to make the workplace safer. The company then implements this plan to promote safety and health in the workplace. As a team - work through a similar process. Each team is going to work as a safety team to analyze a workplace setting (Fast food restaurant) and come up with a safety action plan. Each team will be mapping the hazards for a Fast food restaurant and will develop a safety action plan for two (2) of the hazards identified. Prepare, in advance, a presentation of 8 to 10 minutes using the safety plans. The prepared presentation will be delivers to judges on competition day. Each member of the team must present one hazard.

1. REVIEW the floor plan (see end of document for large version) The first step is to identify the potential hazards in this workplace. Use the floor plan of the Fast food restaurant, from this map, identify the hazards. If you are not sure what the department the hazard(s) might be in, make your best guess based on what you know about the types of hazards and this type of workplace. The quality of your safety action plans will be determined by how thoroughly you analyze your workplace. You also will be presenting your plans to the judges, so the map should clearly identify as many hazards as possible. Step: PRINT a copy of the Floor plan for the Fast food restaurant (one per student and one for the presentation).

2. LABEL the floor plan Step: LABEL the Fast food restaurant floor plan with these identified hazards. The hazard may be found in more than area of the Fast food restaurant.

Step:

Vehicle Traffic Take out window - late night closing.

Heavy Boxes - different weights, different sizes

Walk in freezer - cold environment

Cleaning supplies for bathrooms, cooking surfaces, and floors

Customers - inside and drive through

Oven - two level for cooking food.

Slippery floors near dishwasher, beverage machine and deep fryer.

High Shelves (2 meters) Falling objects on high storage racks.

Raw food - vegetables and meats when preparing meals.

Grill with hot oil for cooking of food.

Knives used for cutting.

Unlit parking lots and back alleys.

IDENTIFY two (2) hazards and WRITE a safety action plan for each hazard. PREPARE, in advance, an eight (8) to ten (10) minute presentation answering the following questions: a. Description of the workplace, what hazards did you map to the floor plan. b. Description, by each team member, of one (1) hazard and the safety action plan developed for that hazard. Each team member must present one (1) hazard.

3. CREATE a Safety Action Plan Now that you have identified the hazards in the Fast food restaurant, as a team you need to develop a safety action plan for two (2) of these hazards. Refer to the completed sample of a Safety Action Plan (see page 4). Step: Print copies of the Safety Action Plan form (one per student) found on page 6. Step: Fill out Safety Action Plan form for two of the hazards you identified on your map (one hazard per team member). The team’s safety action plans and presentations will be judged on the following criteria: a. Demonstration that a clear decision making process was followed. b. The safety action plan and presentation are well-organized. c. The team demonstrated creativity by, for example, coming up with unique solutions. d. Each team member presented one hazard e. Visual aid including the floor plan with identified hazards. 3 | 2014 Elementary Challenge

Presentation guidelines: Each team should follow these presentation guidelines: a) Each team will have between eight to ten minutes (8 to 10) to present their safety action plans. b) The presentation should include information about the workplace and where the hazards identified on the list are found in the workplace. c) The team should state which two (2) hazards were selected. d) Each team member must present their safety action plan. e) Each person in the group should have a speaking role in the presentation. Each team member must describe the safety plan for one hazard. f) The presentation should include some visuals. Must include the floor plan with the hazards identified. Any other creative techniques the team may come up with to make their presentation interesting. g) Teams will be scored on the product they present (their floor plan map, Safety Action Plan forms) as well as the presentation they give.

Elementary Challenge - Workplace Safety Presentation Details Document Overview - Fast Food Restaurant Burger Express is a chain of fast food restaurants. Five years ago, the first restaurant opened. Today there are twenty, and the chain is growing at a rate of one new restaurant a month. The stores are very busy from the time they open at 11:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. The restaurants close at 1:00 a.m. The menu consists of hamburgers, roast beef and chicken sandwiches, and salads. French fries or onion rings are included with every sandwich. All the meats and vegetables are chopped and prepared in the restaurant. The vegetables and meats are restocked from boxes in the freezer/refrigerator. Clean-up begins at 11:00 p.m., when the floors, bathrooms, and all non-cooking surfaces are cleaned. The deep fryer is also turned off at closing and immediately emptied, so it can be filled with fresh oil the next morning. One person remains after 1:00 a.m. to close out the register. An employee usually works at one job for the entire shift. Employees receive thirty minutes of training on that particular job when they are hired. However, when someone calls in sick or there is a backup in one of the work areas, an employee may be asked to work at another station on the spur of the moment. Not many procedures are set for clean-up during the day. Workers do what they have time to do during slow periods. Recently, Burger Express has had a number of worker injuries. Many of them have been minor, such as bruises from slipping on the floor by the deep fryer and soda machines. The company recognizes the potential for more serious injuries, however, as the business expands and more employees are hired. Due to the fast growth, the owners have not had time to put a safety action plan together for their restaurants. Each restaurant is built exactly the same, so a single plan will work at all restaurants. They are interested in safety ideas related to the design of the building and work procedures.
