News story #1

Canada welcomes new immigrants (0:14)

Setting the Scene

Immigration Minister John McCallum announced today that Canada will welcome 300,000 immigrants to the country in 2017. (Adrian Wyld/Canadian Press) (CBC file photo)

The population of Canada is aging, which means the average age is getting older and older. When fewer people are working in a country, the economy will get weaker. To balance the aging population, Canada welcomes immigrants. New immigrants mean more working people in the country, and therefore should help our economy grow.

Pre-listening Questions Why did you and/or your family decide to come to Canada? What other countries did you consider immigrating to? Does your country welcome new immigrants?

Transcripts of Weekly news stories NOVEMBER WEEKLY NEWS STORIES

Introduction

TIME 0:00

Hi, I’m Don Bell and this is Learning English with the CBC for November 7th, with stories that made news over the past week.

Story 1

Canada won't increase the number of new immigrants being welcomed to the country next year, but is planning for a bigger increase in numbers in the coming years. The government has said Canada will bring in 300,000 new arrivals next year, the same number as this year. Higher immigration targets are part of a government strategy to increase economic growth. The plan is based on the work of a council of economic advisers. The council says that increasing the number of immigrants by tens of thousands would boost the number of working age people in Canada which is currently decreasing. The council said the government should gradually increase immigration levels to 450,000 a year over the next five years.

Story 2

1:19 ATB Financial Bank says it believes that the worst of the energy downturn may be over and that Alberta will come out of the two-year recession caused by the collapse of oil prices. In its latest economic report, the bank says it expects Alberta's economy to grow 2.1 per cent next year. ATB chief economist Todd Hirsch says oil prices are expected to be around US$50 to US$55 a barrel next year. There will be more stability in the energy industry -- but not growth. He says the rehiring of the tens of thousands of workers who have lost their jobs in the downturn will not start for at least another year or more, but layoffs should end. Now that Halloween is over, the Farm Animal Rescue and Rehoming 2:24 Movement, an animal sanctuary near Wetaskiwin is collecting unwanted pumpkins to feed its pot-bellied pigs. Pumpkins are like candy to the pigs. Each fall, the rescue group has collected hundreds of pumpkins from around Edmonton as a special treat for its pigs and other livestock that have been rescued from across Alberta. Pumpkins are a healthy snack with plenty of nutrients that are good for pigs. There are a number of drop-off locations now open across the Edmonton region.
