COURSE DESCRIPTION The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the history and current status of the Turkish economy. The students will have exposure to past and current challenges of a developing economy within the global economic system. The course will cover macroeconomic as well as sectoral topics. GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (COMPETENCES) On the successful completion of this course, students are expected to have an understanding of:  Macroeconomic and developmental environment that the Turkish economic agents faced and are facing now  Macroeconomic and developmental policies implemented during the economic history of Turkey  Regulatory and organizational environment  International competition and its effects on the Turkish economy  Sectoral aspects on the Turkish economy The students are also expected to develop their writing and presentation skills through the report that they will be required to prepare and through classroom presentations and discussions. TEACHING METHODS: This course will be taught through 3 hours of classroom teaching per week. There will be guest speakers. The students will prepare and present an analysis as described below in “Report and Presentation” Section of this syllabus; the format of the report and that of presentation material is considered important part of the students’ performance in this course. During the classes, the students are encouraged to bring up current economic issues from books, newspapers, journals or other sources. V.01.10.2013

ASSESSMENT METHOD The assessment of the course will be based on the following table: Research Report (20%) and Presentation (10%) : 30% Paper Presentation : 20% Final Exam : 40% Attendance and Class Participation : 10% Total :100% RESEARCH REPORT and PRESENTATION Each student will be required to prepare a report on a selected research topic and present it in the class. The topic of the report and presentation will be pre-agreed with the instructor. The report’s format as well as content will be assessed for grading. The presentation should be powerpoint (or an equivalent software) based. PAPER/CHAPTER PRESENTATION Each student will select (and have the agreement of the professor) one of the chapters/articles in the reading list and present it in the class. Power point or an equivalent presentation tool is required. Selected readings are listed in this syllabus and distributed along the weekly time schedule. ATTENDANCE Attendance is compulsory by university regulations. WEEKLY SCHEDULE The lecture topics within the semester will be presented under the following schedule. Changes in schedule will be communicated to the students. Timing of student presentations will change during the course of the semester. Week 1 2
