E-News letter MAY 2016 R A J A M A H E N D R AVA R A M M U N I C I PA L C O R P O R AT I O N Conducting awareness programmes to public and street vendors on ban on plastic bags/covers. Every time a city inundates in deluge, the primary reason seems to be the drains getting choked with plastic. Low weight plastic carry bags that are of low recycling value end up on roadsides or garbage dumps, causing water logs during rains. The health impacts of plastic are numerous. All this together prompted the Commissioner to make resolution on plastic ban. While the ban continues in Rajamahendravaram the implementation went astray within a quick time and the Municipal corporation is taking proper measures in achieving 100% ban on plastic to face the challenges ahead. Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation has been bringing awareness to both end users i.e vendors and consumers. The current situation and quantity of plastic bags used in the city is reduced and is quite impressive with the help of promoting paper bags, cotton bags. Raids are also conducted division wise at random shops and are charged with fine if found using plastic bags. People are also invited to complain if found so, and announcing on plastic use with the help of a portable mic and speaker at public places is also in practice which is found to be very effective. Along with the efforts put in by the Municipal Corporation Non Govt. Organisations are also lending a supporting hand in bringing awareness.

Enforcing Commercial buildings to provide parking space in cellar/stilt floors All the cities require the parking place area be provided at the same building itself. One cannot provide parking at a nearby property or road i.e Govt. property. The Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation has made it mandatory for commercial buildings to provide parking space in the cellar/stilt floor in the same building to reduce traffic congestion on roads, Any commercial building failing to provide parking as such are penalized and are enforced legally to take immediate action.
