April began with our week in Madeira to coincide with the Parade for the Flower Festival. What a wonderful week that was, we were blessed with lovely weather, the hotel was really good, the food exceptional and our guide was fantastic – as for the parade itself, it was A M A Z I N G! This was followed by a visit to Bristol Old Vic to see Jeremy Irons in “A Long Day’s Journey into Night” – there had been a muddle with the booking and we didn’t have our usual ‘best seats in the house’ but even from being ‘In the God’s’ we could hear really clearly. Some outstanding performances – very thought provoking! The following week a select group went to Stonehenge, it was cold but stayed dry for this interesting visit, the new interpretation centre was excellent as was the supper on the way home. Two days later we had a full coach for Mama Mia, another wonderful production that really has that ‘feel-good’ factor; I certainly enjoyed it, even more than the last time. Three days later 49 of us we were off to Bristol Airport again, this time on the way to Lake Como, the itinerary finally arriving the day before we left! We were again blessed with some wonderful sunny weather although our visit coincided with the artic weather that those at home experienced. The last minute change of hotel actually worked out alright as we enjoyed a really lovely ‘bonus’ meal on our first night. Our visit to Como coincided with a wonderful ‘farmers market’ and our guide was very informative. The trip to St. Moritz in Switzerland was breath-taking, climbing to over 7,000 feet we saw acres of crocuses about to open into full bloom, they must be a truly wonderful sight. St Moritz was in between seasons so most of the shops were closed but the return ride on the Bernina Express was awe inspiring! The way the train climbs through the mountains and then descends must be one of the world’s great engineering feats. We also enjoyed travelling on the ferries and visiting some of the world’s most beautiful gardens – and all in one of the most stunning locations on earth. Goodnight Mr. Tom at the New Theatre in Cardiff was very cleverly and sympathetically produced then followed by a lovely meal at Giovannis. Then it was off to Windsor for HMQ 90th Birthday Celebrations - WOW! That was quite a trip! We started with one of the funniest plays I’ve ever seen, It Runs in the Family. We had a very good meal at The Mill at Sonning; then did we ever laugh, oh what fun it was. Royal Windsor Show was an eye-opener for many, the sheer scale of the shopping, the wonderfully organised carriage driving, the arena shows, all were top class. Then in the evening it was THAT show, 900 horses and over 1,500 people all

presenting the very best from around the world. The TV coverage (that I still have to see) can’t possibly capture the atmosphere of such a dramatic and wonderful pageant. It truly was “Fit for a Queen”. The next day could well have been an anti-climax, but the weather was great for our ‘surprise visit’. We boarded a boat on the Thames and went up-river from Reading and arrived at our destination of Maple Durham, a truly delightful privately owned Elizabethan Manor. After a light lunch there was a private guided tour of the house, time to enjoy the grounds and the sunshine then back to the hotel to change for the evening. A delicious dinner at the 5* Royal Garden Hotel then to the Royal Albert Hall for what will probably be the last performance there of José Carreras. He was supported by two top-class lady soloists; I think we are all agreed the second half was much better than the first, another memorable evening. So to what is new – very late in the day we have The Mikado at Bristol Hippodrome in less than a month, please let me know A.S.A.P. if you are interested so I can pay for your ticket. French Without Tears is another Terrance Rattigan comedy, this time at the Northcott in Exeter, which I’m sure will be well worth a visit. As a total contrast I’ve arranged for us to have a “Behind the Scenes” visit at Exeter Race-Course before the race meeting there in early October. In November we can return to the New Theatre at Cardiff for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” starring Georgia May Foote which sounds real fun! After that there are three new productions, all at Bristol Hippodrome that I have booked for 2017 – I know you don’t even want to think about it, but if I don’t book them when they come on sale, I can’t get you the seats that you like! In February there is that old favourite Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang which will cheer up that dreary time of the year. In April there is the new Matthew Bourne’s ballet The Red Shoes, I know you have been waiting for this - I had planned to book to see it in Plymouth but was asked not to as WSAS are going there. The third show is not till October 2017 when WarHorse will be returning to Bristol. Many of you have already seen this remarkable drama, but I think there are several of you who would appreciate the opportunity. On the holiday front the bookings have come in quite well for the Week in Gotland but we need a few more to make it viable. For a long time now I’ve been planning a visit to the South of France - as we will be visiting some of the best wine growing areas in the country, I wanted to be able to bring some of it back with us! Take a look and see if it ticks the boxes for you? I hope you enjoy this latest Newsletter and look forward to seeing you during the coming months Sue.

With D’Oyly Carte Opera Company The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death. Unfortunately Nanki-Poo, Ko-Ko the Lord High Executioner also has Yum-Yum in his sights. Can a case of mistaken identity save the day? Sullivan’s sunny and sparkling score is perfectly matched by Gilbert’s satirical lyrics, showing the pair at the height of their creative powers. Saturday 17th September ~ Longleat

Longleat Balloon Festival

Longleat’s first Sky Safari will take place in September and will see a mass ascension of fifty hot air balloons from Longleat House’s Lawn. During the day many of the balloons will be beautifying the sky above Longleat’s 900 acres of parkland with individual tethered ascents. Included in these fifty balloons, one for each year the famous safari park has been open to the public, will be Longleat’s own bespoke-made lion, and both Puddles and Splash; two penguin balloons. The highlight of this festival will be the spectacular nightglow show on the Saturday evening, where every balloon will illuminate the night’s sky with a synchronised lights show in time to dramatic music. Be advised that certain elements of this festival will be weather dependant and are subject to change at short notice due to weather conditions. As everyone enjoyed the visit to Longleat for the Festival of Light, I’m hoping this festival will also prove popular. I was the very first to book in a coach and thought you would appreciate going to the ‘Nightglow’. We will stop at Hawk House on the way for coffee (included) then you’ll have time at Longleat to do as you please. Very few details are available yet but I’m planning for the coach to drive around the Safari Park in the afternoon then we’ll watch the balloons ascend and have time to eat before the ‘Nightglow’. Cost: Coach, coffee & Entrance ~ £36 Depart: ~ Minehead 9.30am Return: ~ Minehead (approx) 10.00pm

Monday 19th September ~ 7.30pm at Northcott Theatre, Exeter

Orange Tree Theatre & English Touring Theatre co-production

Terence Rattigan’s sparkling 1936 comedy was the first smash-hit success from the writer of The Deep Blue Sea, Separate Tables and The Winslow Boy. After a group of young men arrive at Monsieur Maingot’s French school for the summer to cram for the Diplomatic exam, their concentration is disrupted by beautiful visitor Diana Lake. Quelle surprise, they must learn another new language: girls. At first, it seems pretty simple. Kit loves Diana and she loves him. And Bill. Oh, and darling Alan, of course. Then there’s Jack: she’s in love too. Meanwhile, Babe conceals his feelings… Not so simple after all. Maingot’s French language school becomes the romantic battleground for a group of young men as their studies are interrupted by the beautiful Diana. Don’t miss a rare chance to see Rattigan’s ravishing 1930s comedy of young love and stiff upper lips. Directed by Paul Miller, the Orange Tree Theatre combined with the English Touring Theatre are returning by popular demand after a sell-out run last year. I know that theatre reviews are occasionally misleading, but I think this revival of Terrance Rattigan’s play will be well worth seeing. I‘ve reserved places in the theatre restaurant, unfortunately the menu is not yet available but I hope to have it for the next Newsletter. Two courses £17 or three courses £20 Cost: Coach & Ticket ~ £36 or £33 Optional meal £17 or £20 Depart: ~ Minehead 3.45pm Return: ~ Minehead (approx) 11.30pm

Sister Act is coming to Bristol - the new production is to be directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood with musical supervision and arrangements by Tony award-winning Sarah Travis. Disguised as a nun and under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most popular and successful shows in Musical theatre history. Bristol Light Opera Company (BLOC) Productions are delighted to be staging Fiddler at the Bristol Hippodrome in the same year as Broadway’s latest revival of this timeless classic. It is as relevant a political and social story now as it was half a century ago, and has appeal for all generations. Its universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. I hear very good reports about BLOC productions and I thought it would be good to be able to enjoy an evening at the theatre without it costing an ‘arm and a leg’. For those who would like to join a group of EE’s for a meal, I have arranged an optional one at the Raddison Blu Hotel just across the square from the theatre and where we had a very good meal recently. Thursday 10th November ~ 2.30pm at New Theatre Cardiff

Starring Georgia May Foote, Matt Barber & Victor McGuire Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and so memorably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic 1961 film, is being given a new lease of life as a stage play with music in a sparkling sophisticated production. This tale of vivacious, good-time girl Holly and her fantastical existence in 1940s New York City, is told through the eyes of a young writer, completely fascinated by this exquisite extrovert who every woman wants to be, and every man wants to be with. Featuring memorable songs from the era, this stylish production is set to capture the hearts of audiences and sparkle like a diamond in a Tiffany’s window. I know you all enjoyed going to the New Theatre in Cardiff on the two occasions we’ve been there, and you also enjoyed the meal at Giovannis after the show. So when I saw that Georgia May Foote is to star in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in their schedule it was to me the obvious one to book. Georgia, who was recently in Strictly Come Dancing, is very excited to be joining the cast in this prestigious roll in the autumn. Cost: Coach & seat in stalls or circle £34 Optional meal at Giovannis £16 Depart: ~ Minehead 9.30am Return: ~ Minehead (approx) 8.00pm

Sunday 20th November ~ 3.00pm at Barclaycard Arena Birmingham

The world’s oldest and most famous equestrian academy celebrates its 450th anniversary this year. Considered Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO since 2010, the Spanish Riding School in Vienna continues to delight both connoisseurs and newcomers to horsemanship almost half a millennium since its foundation in 1565. To celebrate this landmark anniversary, the Spanish Riding School of Vienna will perform three of six exclusive shows at the Barclaycard Arena from 18-20th November 2016. Each show will be hosted by TV presenter and British Dressage Ambassador, Nicki Chapman. Amazingly it will be four years almost to the day since we saw the Spanish Riding School at Birmingham, but knowing your love of equestrian events, when I heard they were making their 450th Anniversary tour and would be there again, I immediately booked some tickets! There are only to be six shows and this is the only matinee at Birmingham, it will be the last of the tour. We will make a comfort stop at Gloucester Services on our way north and you will have some time in Birmingham before the show. Afterwards we will again stop at Gloucester Services for some refreshment on the way home as I think this will be the speediest and most efficient way of feeding everyone. I am sure this will once again prove to be very popular, so to avoid disappointment I advise you not to leave it too long to book. Cost: Coach & Ticket ~ £82 Depart: ~ Minehead 9.15am

Return: ~ Minehead (approx) 10.30pm

What happens when the children are caught and imprisoned with the other youngsters by the evil Child Catcher? Will it all end happilyever-after? Well of course it will! Thursday 6th April 2017 ~ 2.30pm at Bristol Hippodrome

A beloved fairy tale Academy Award-winning movie, The Red Shoes has seduced audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion. Matthew Bourne’s magical adaption of the legendry Powell & Pressburger film reunites the team who brought you New Adventurers’ world-wide hit Sleeping Beauty, with Sumptuus designs be Lez Brotherston, Paule Constable and Paul Groothuis. It is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerizing music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann whoes work ranges from the witty and playfully robust to the achingly romantic and bittersweet. An intoxicating drama where life imitates art with fatal consequences - The Red Shoes will dazzle your senses and break your heart. “Britain’s most successful choreographer will blow your mind with his sheer imagination, wit and brio” I know that you have been waiting for this one; I was going to book when it goes to Plymouth, but was asked by WSAS not to do so. We will have the advantage of seeing the production on a much larger stage and I have some excellent premium seats in the centre of the theatre. As usual time for lunch or for some retail therapy before the show. Cost: Coach and ticket stalls premium seats £57 Stall “A” seats £46 Depart: ~ Minehead 10.15am Return: ~ Minehead (approx) 7.30pm

The National Theatre’s acclaimed production of WarHorse begins a major tour of the UK in September 2017 and Bristol is the second place it will be performed. The tour will coincide with the Centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War and follows the productions enormously successful tour of the UK 2013-2014. It’s been seen by more than 7,000,000 people worldwide. Set against the backdrop of WW1 it features ground-breaking puppetry which brings breathing galloping horses to life on stage. It has been seen in 97 cities in 10 countries and at present is showing in China. Although this is still 18 months away, I have booked the seats in order to get you good ones. Whilst many of you will have seen this outstanding theatre, I know there will be some of you who have not. In my opinion it is one of the most memorable productions that I have seen, the reason it has won so many accolades and why it has been showing in London for 10 years. We will make our way to Bristol where you will be free to do a little retail therapy or enjoy a leisurely lunch before the matinee performance. Cost: Coach and ticket stalls premium seats £72 Stall seats £62 Depart: ~ Minehead 10.15am Return: ~ Minehead (approx) 7.30pm

Included are visits to the 13th century church at Gammelgarn and the Bronze Age burial cairns at Uggårda. Monday 19 June 2017 - today we will tour the north of Gotland, where the limestone landscape is starkly beautiful and understated. NEWSLETTERS AND BOOKINGS The “Exmoor Extroverts” is not a commercial organisation: there is an initial admin fee of £10 which also covers the newsletters until the end of 2016. Newsletters can then either be e-mailed (free of charge) or paper copies sent, the charge for which is £10 per annum per household. Prices for outings and meals are inclusive of gratuities. If you would like food that is not on the menu, for special diets, do please make a note on the booking form, or phone me. We acknowledge bookings via e-mail where possible and you can usually contact me by e-mail even if I am away or abroad. However, if you’ve not got e-mail and want to be sure that we’ve got your booking, please call on 01984 631036 - if I don’t answer PLEASE leave a clear message with your full name & phone number. A few days before the outing, we normally phone all those who have booked, just to remind them! Bookings that are cancelled: - if the tickets are re-sold, will be credited to your account (less £3 admin per ticket) to be used against a future booking. ‘Stay-Away’ cancellations can’t be refunded unless the place can be filled so holiday insurance is therefore recommended.

COACHES

– for day trips start at the junction of King Edward Road with Alexandra Road, please try to park in Alexandra Road please do NOT block anyones drive or park where the coach stops! The coaches go through Alcombe, picking up at the Silvermead bus stop and from there make their way along the A39 to Williton, (picking up on the way as requested) and should arrive at Williton 15/20 minutes after leaving Minehead. The route from Williton depends on where we are heading; if we are going to Exeter then we can pick up in Taunton, either near the Cross Keys, the bus stop near the crematorium or in Wellington Industrial estate. For our trips to Bristol, Bath, or Cardiff we go via the A39 and can pick up en-route to Bridgwater. If you are in any doubt about pick-up points, do please give me a call. ‘Stay-Aways’ start in Townsend Road. The Exmoor Extroverts started life in 1999 with a trip to the Bristol Hippodrome to see Phantom of the Opera. This proved to be so popular I was asked to arrange more outings. From that small beginning, we have snowballed! In 2015 we undertook over 50 outings and 13 ‘Stay-Aways’. 2016 already has a busy programme! I hope you’ll find something to your liking and join us for some of the outings or holidays. If you’ve any queries, or ideas for future outings, please get in touch.
