Mars, veterans of the wholesale hardware business, started the company in 1924. Mars Duluth Branch The roots of the Mars Company are firmly planted in Northern Minnesota. It’s where we started our business and why our Duluth branch is so much a part of our heritage. The primary industries we served in the early days such as iron ore mining, taconite processing, Great Lakes shipping and pulp and paper are still important to us today. But there are also some new industries emerging. One in particular is aircraft manufacturing where Duluth is home to the builder of the world’s best selling single engine piston powered airplane. The Mars Duluth branch includes an experienced sales staff, a customer service team, our power transmission and rubber products specialists, our billing department, our hose coupling shop and one of our three modern warehouses. The inventory at our Duluth warehouse includes more maintenance-related products to match the profile of the customer base we serve there.
Power Transmission Products Mars has been in the hose and conveyor belt supply and service business for over 50 years. However in 2004 we expanded our power transmission offering to include products such as pulleys, sprockets, idlers, hydraulic hose & couplings, V-belts, motors and drives.
Hose Coupling and Belt Shop To support our power transmission products sales, our Duluth branch houses a modern hose coupling and belt shop. Some of the services we provide include industrial and hydraulic hose coupling of up to two inches in diameter, mechanical belt splicing and hydraulic cylinder repair. In addition, engineering and design services are available to customers who require assistance in selecting a new conveyor system.
Mars Hibbing Branch Mars recently opened a 17,000 square foot branch in Hibbing, MN to serve the many companies that are part of the economic surge on the Iron Range. Mars Bloomington Branch At the Mars Company’s Bloomington branch, which was opened in 1974, we offer an experienced and knowledgeable sales staff, a dedicated customer service team, our purchasing department, a modern warehouse and a broad inventory with a product mix geared toward the needs of our regional customers. Just as in Duluth and Hibbing, Mars Bloomington offers a hands-on, no hassle approach to doing business that sets us apart from large national distributors. In an effort to improve our internal processes, the branch recently completed a 5S initiative that entirely reinvented the operation and procedures used in the warehouse. All personnel were trained in the application of 5S principles to meet our corporate performance standards of reducing transaction errors and increasing on-time delivery, fill rate, and shipping efficiency. The 5S project has been a huge success, resulting in better performance and instilling a mindset of continuous improvement.
Band Saw Welding Department The Bloomington branch is home to the company’s band saw welding department. As a certified Simonds weld center, we are able to custom weld band saw blades of up to 2-1/4” in width. We stock thousands of feet of carbon, bi-metal and carbide-tipped band saw stock and can make and ship blades same day.
Tool Repair Department Mars offers a repair service for all major brands of air and electric power tools, lubrication pumps, gas detection instruments and mechanical torque tools. Our service technicians are keenly aware of the importance of diagnosing the problem and fixing the tool quickly.

Conveyor Belt Service, Inc. Conveyor Belt Service, Inc. was established as a subsidiary of the W.P. & R.S. Mars Co. in 1953. Initially CBS serviced a dozen local iron ore mining companies, but today its customer base is much more diverse. Included now are taconite processing plants, coal mines, wood products companies, coal-fired power plants, Great Lakes shipping facilities and cargo carrying vessels. The range of products CBS offers includes heavy duty Goodyear conveyor belting, used belting, pulley lagging, sheet rubber and splice kits. We also add value to our customers by performing belt inspections and trouble shooting their conveyor systems. In response to a growing demand for its belt services, CBS is currently considering a major expansion and renovation of its facility in Virginia, Minnesota. Great Lakes Shipping: CBS crews work on the self-loading vessels that sail the Great Lakes. Crews work on the vessels during winter months when they are not in service to repair or replace conveyor belts. During the shipping season, CBS belt technicians travel aboard the ships and do the work between ports in order to minimize down time. Each year we work over 6,000 hours on Great Lakes cargo carriers.
Belting and Sheet Rubber Fabrication: CBS has a large shop offering a variety of rubber fabricating services. Our belt technicians can help you with: slitting or cutting of sheet rubber or belting; hot, cold or mechanical splicing and hole punching just to name a few.
