DREAM HOME LOTTERY After this I looked and behold, a great multitude that no one could number from every nation…standing before the throne and the Lamb, clothed in white robes…crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb….They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” Revelation 7:9ff.

October and November always bring two or three pieces of mail to our house about the next Dream Home Lottery, either in Sarnia or London or Toronto. The proceeds from the tickets will benefit the hospitals in those centers and the one lucky winner will get a brand new dream home! As I write this we are making plans to celebrate All Saints Day in worship the first Sunday in November. It moves me to think about my dream home in heaven and to share that in my teaching and preaching this month. All Saints Day celebrates the resurrection of the souls of the faithfully departed which have gone to be with the Lord in heaven. We refer to those who have gone before us in faith in Jesus as the “Saints or Church Triumphant” and we who continue to follow Jesus here in this world as the” Saints or Church Militant” as we continue to fight the fight of faith in our daily lives. With the dream Home Lottery, the winner of the new home has to buy a ticket—make a sacrifice of $100—a sacrifice that may or may not be rewarded. The consolation is that you have made a contribution to the hospital. How different with the saints who receive their place in the Dream Home in heaven! There is no sacrifice for those who go to heaven! There is nothing to pay or do to receive the free gift of salvation and eternal life with God. Jesus, the Lamb of God, has paid the price on Calvary’s cross with His shed blood and His very death for lost sinners like you and me. With Jesus’ death and resurrection He makes it possible for us to go to heaven through faith in Him. Salvation through faith alone, in Christ alone! That’s it! The Bible calls this the full and free grace of God. What is also true about this Dream Home Prize in heaven—there is more than one winner! Jesus offers salvation to all who believe in Him as their Saviour and Lord. Heaven is a free gift of His love, mercy and grace to all believers. Further, God wants none to be lost from heaven and so He sends us as believers into the world to share this saving faith with others. We are the front line missionaries of our day. The writer to the Hebrews says, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see…(Believers in God) were still living by faith when they died…they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city (in heaven) for them” (Heb. 111:13,16). Through faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour we are all heavenly Dream Home Winners! The outcome is certain because of Him. Live the winner’s life and share it with others you know! He wants them in heaven too! Pastor Roger All Saints Day

Redeemer To Receive a Defibrillator The Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund is awarding Redeemer Lutheran Church a defibrillator in memory of RCMP Constable Peter Schiemann at its Dinner Gala in London, Ontario on November 8. Dave Mounsey was an OPP officer and volunteer firefighter with the Blyth Fire Department. While on duty October 14, 2006 Dave was in involved a serious motor vehicle accident while responding to a call and succumbed to his injuries sustained in the accident. The Fund was created in Dave’s memory. Just prior to his death Dave had run in a marathon to raise funds to purchase a defibrillator for the Blyth Fire Department. The DMMF has continued Dave’s vision and raises funds to purchase, donate and erect public access defibrillators while remembering and honouring fallen Law Enforcement, Fire, Paramedics, and Military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities and their country. Redeemer will be the 33rd recipient of a defibrillator thanks to the generous contributions of supporters of the Fund. Pastor Ellis, Chaplain for Sarnia Police for 25 years, will accept the award on behalf of the congregation, at the Memorial Fund Dinner Gala to be held at the Carousel Room at the Western Fair. Constable Peter Schiemann’s father is the Rev. Don Schiemann who once served at Ascension Lutheran Church in Corunna, and is now President of the Alberta British Columbia District of the Lutheran Church Canada and lives in Edmonton. Rev. Don and Beth Schiemann who are being flown in for the Gala by West Jet, a sponsor of the DMMF, along with Pastor Roger and Lynda will be guests of honour at the dinner. The defibrillator will be a ready asset to help support the life of a needy person in our church should the case arise. Parish Nurse, Marianne Jackson will demonstrate the device to us in the near future and would be willing also to speak to groups in the parish about its use. We thank God for this gift in memory of RCMP Constable Peter Schiemann who was a member of the Lutheran Church. Constable Schiemann was gunned down with two other officers in Mayerthorpe, Alberta on March 3, 2005 while responding to a call. We thank God that Peter was a strong and faithful member of Christ’s family and is with his Lord in heaven.

Empowered by Grace for Faithful Stewardship A young boy walks into a small drug store and asks the druggist, “May I use the telephone?”. The druggist replies, “You certainly may,” and shows him where the telephone is. The boy calls a grocery store and asks the man who answers the phone, “Is your grocery store looking for someone to stock the shelves?”. The man replies, “No, we already have a stock boy”. The boy suggests, “If he isn’t doing a good job, maybe you need to get someone who will do a better job”. The man replies, “No, we are pleased with the work the boy is doing”, so the boy hung up the telephone. The druggist over-hears the conversation and says to the boy, “I’m sorry you didn’t get the job”. The boy says, “I don’t need a job because I am the stock boy. I was just checking to see what they thought of my work”. What if you could call God to ask Him how He saw your effort in fulfilling the purpose for which He created you? What kind of marks would He give you for being His witness, or how you were doing in your service to others, or how you were doing in your giving? What kind of response would you expect to hear? Would God see you as a person relying on the Holy Spirit to do His will or working in your own strength and giving yourself credit for your successes? When God looks at you, does He see that you acknowledge Him as the source of all that is good? Does He see you seeking to use His strength and wisdom? Would God tell you that He is pleased with the ways you are using the time, talents and money He has entrusted to you? Unfortunately, we all fall well short of God’s standards, but, because of what Christ did for us on the cross, we are forgiven for all the times we have failed to honour God with behaviour and efforts to please Him. By His grace, He molds and transforms us into God-pleasing people who seek to please Him. In Christ, we can do God’s work well. Starting in November, we are offering a stewardship emphasis titled “Empowered by Grace for Faithful Stewardship”. We hope and pray that you will be participating in this year’s look at Christian stewardship and prayerfully commit yourself to the Lord and His ministry in this coming year of 2015. Pastor Roger Ellis, Redeemer Board of Directors

LAMBTON COLLEGE OUTREACH TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Pastor Roger met with Amy Weiler, Events Coordinator and ESL teacher in the International Student Department at Lambton College on Friday, October 31 to distribute 15 blankets, that had been donated by members of the congregation to international students. We will be looking at other projects that we can do over the year to show interest and Christian concern for these students at the College. If you would like to be a part of helping any of these go forward please speak to Pastor and we will see if we can put together a small committee for outreach to the college to organize some events. In this way we can extend the hand of God’s love to these students who will be in our community for up to four years at the college and then hopefully become citizens of Canada.

W.O.R.S.H.I.P. NEWS (Women of Redeemer, Sharing, Helping in Prayer)

October Luncheon Our monthly meeting was attended by 16 women of the congregation. The lunch was provided by Daphne Whitson and Sheila Ginn. The devotion following the lunch focused on “Remembrance” and the following poem, written by Robert James Macdonald, the father of Sheila Ginn, was read. This poem was composed during the 2nd World War. Voices of the Legions Lost Disturbing visions mar my sleep: Fields of crosses, acres deep Where phantom soldiers walk at night And vanish in the morning light. Of late their talk resentful grows As in groups they meet between the rows, Unheard, lest those ears attuned, And know the misery of the doomed. “We died that you might live!” they said “Peace shall be yours when we are dead. We have not slept for many years. To us the earth transmits her fears. From far and near come sounds of strife! Our tombs vibrate with cries so rife: Familiar sounds we thought long stilled. And why are children ‘mong the killed?” When morning comes the visions wane. But yet, their words throb in my brain, “United! For thus can war be stayed, Else we, like Jesus, are betrayed”. Student Encouragement Packages If you have students attending college or university away from home, please send mailing addresses to Sheila Ginn by e-mail [email protected] or leave the information in her mail box at church so that their names can be added to the mail out list. We send out three (3) packages during the school year to our students, to let them know that we at Redeemer are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. Funeral Receptions If you wish to assist with funeral receptions, please call Sheila Ginn at 519-542-3663 or e-mail her at [email protected] to have your name added to the call list. Both men and women are welcome to become part of this ministry. Kitchen News Enhanced maps of kitchen items will be available shortly. This new system will assist people using the kitchen to locate dishes, etc. as they work in the kitchen. Plastic gloves should be worn when preparing or handling food. Outer wear should be hung in the hallway, not taken into the kitchen. This is a health and safety issue. Purse storage is in the cupboard over the handwashing sink. Please use the protective clothing and equipment that are available when operating the dishwasher. Updated instructions for operation of the dishwasher are posted in the kitchen. As a safety concern, young children are not allowed in the kitchen when the dishwasher is in operation. Next Meeting Our Pre-Advent Communion service will take place on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:30 p.m. Following the service in the sanctuary, we will be decorating the Angel Tree in the church foyer and then gathering in the Fellowship Hall for seasonal refreshments. Please mark this date on your calendar and invite a friend. The Angel Tree is our Christmas Project and additional information is provided in detail in this Network.

Angel Tree Project The “Angel Tree” will be set up with tags available on Sunday, th November 30 in the church foyer. When you take a tag from the tree it will be recorded, so that we have a list to refer to. Unwrapped gifts with the angel tag attached need to be returned to the church by Sunday, December 14th. The Women’s Interval Home will be picking up the gifts on Monday, December 15th. SILVER tags are for boys and GOLD tags are for girls. The tags will denote age, size if required, and a gift suggestion for the receiver. Please indicate on the sheet provided, your name and your tag information so that we have a record for the Women’s Interval Home. The project will be helping the children who are involved with the Women’s Interval Home and the distribution of Christmas gifts for them. We will be reaching children in the community who need our support at this difficult time in their lives. We have generously supported children in need for over two decades with this project. W.O.R.S.H.I.P. (Women of Redeemer) has agreed to facilitate the project. Thank you for your support. If you have any questions regarding the Angel Tree, please contact Sheila Ginn at 519-542-3663 or e-mail her at [email protected].

REDEEMER PHOTO DIRECTORY ,

We have had a wonderful response, and time slots are almost full for our photo directory portraits on November 5, 6, 7, 8 and 17. Thanks to all who have set aside a time to come and have their photos taken. It looks like we are going to have a wonderful new directory for our 80th anniversary and it will be great to go home after Sunday service and look up names of those we don’t know. Winners of the $20.00 gift coupon will be announced in the December Network. If you are a “winner”, your coupon will be waiting for you when you arrive for your photo session. If you have a few hours to spare, we are still in need of some volunteers to assist the photographer during the photo sessions. This would be a 3-4 hour shift, filling out photographer cards and making calls if someone forgets to come at their appointed time. Please speak to Jane Anne Rose if you are able to help.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Also known as Samaritan’s Purse, this is a wonderful project that Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son initiated several years ago. When we get involved we have the opportunity to give a very tangible and meaningful expression of God’s love to hurting children in some of the most destitute parts of the world. There is far more to shoeboxes than toys, hygiene items and school supplies. Each one is an important seed for spreading the life-transforming message of Jesus Christ. Won’t you get involved? Simply take a box and the instructions inside give you all the info you will need. There are still approximately 20 boxes that have not been taken to fill. Last year 115 boxes were filled by members of this church! The final date for the collection of the boxes is Sunday, November 9. Pat Weber will then be taking them to People’s Church for packing on November 13. Thank you to Pat Weber for again coordinating this worthwhile project for Redeemer.

NATIVITY SCENE COSTUMES We will be looking for volunteers for several things… 1) We need volunteers to help unpack and sort costumes on Thursday, December 4 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. 2) We need people willing to iron costumes on Friday, December 5 at 9:30 a.m. Bring your iron, ironing board and a spray bottle. 3) It’s time to get ready for the Santa Claus parade again. We will need volunteers to help t dress the kids on Saturday, December 6th at 3:30 p.m. Of course, we also need about 13 kids to sign up to be the characters on the float. Watch for a sign up sheet. Please let Lynda Ellis know if you can help, and watch for a sign-up sheet in the foyer.

Over the course of 16 weeks they have made 220 blankets, 90 fleece hats and 35 rolled bandages. There is a beehive of activity and lots of laughter for the ladies who do this, and there is always room for another helper. A couple of men take care of preparing lunch for the quilters and a great time is had by all. The group can always use donations of large pieces of fabric for their blankets.

Energy Balance & Cancer Risk

 

Did you know? Exercise curbs fatigue and other symptoms in cancer patients and survivors Obesity itself, with the hormonal chaos it causes, is emerging as one of the biggest risk factors for cancer Today’s Canadian children and youth are heavier, fatter, rounder and weaker than they were a generation ago Only 15% of adult Canadians get the recommended levels of exercise

From Marianne Jackson, Parish Nurse … 

,,,

Daily habits like diet and exercise have connections to cancer much more than one might think. Research has shown poor diet and inactivity are two key factors that can increase a person’s cancer risk. The evidence is strong as 1/3 rd of annual deaths contributed to cancer are linked to poor diet, physical inactivity and carrying too much weight. Scientists are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of understanding the effects of something called ‘Energy Balance’ on the development and progression of cancer and on cancer patients’ quality of life after treatment. Energy balance refers to the integrated effects of diet, physical activity, and genetics on growth and body weight over an individual’s life. It is a term researchers use to describe how physical activity, diet and weight influence health. Weight, body composition, physical activity and diet affect many physiologic (normal) systems and appear to alter the cancer process at many points. Physical activity is a key determinant of energy expenditure therefore is a critical component of energy balance. The beneficial effects of physical activity go beyond controlling body weight. It can help improve hormone levels and the way the immune system functions, help maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases e.g. diabetes, heart disease. In addition to health benefits, research indicates physical activity can affect the risk of colon, breast, lung and prostate cancer. Despite these health benefits, recent studies show more than 50% of our population do not engage in enough physical activity. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles whereby such movement results in an expenditure of energy. The latest recommendations for adults call for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week, or an equivalent combination, preferably spread throughout the week. This should be activity over and above usual daily activities like using the stairs instead of an elevator. For children the recommendation is at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous intensity daily, with vigorous intensity activity at least 3 days weekly. Moderate activities are those that make an individual breathe as hard as what occurs during a brisk walk. Vigorous intensity activities force the use of large muscle groups, increase health rate, breathe faster and deeper, and cause sweating. Unbalanced consumption of high energy foods (sugar, starch, fats) and low in essential nutrients contributes to energy excess, overweight and obesity. Obesity is defined as a condition in which a person has an abnormally high and unhealthy proportion of body fat. Cancer risk is increased by being overweight or obese because excess weight (fat tissue) causes the body to produce and circulate excess, high levels of estrogen and insulin, hormones that can stimulate cancer growth. Fat cells also produce hormones called adipokines that may stimulate or inhibit cell growth. Fat cells may have direct and indirect effects on other tumor growth regulators. In addition, often obese people are known to have chronic low-level or “subacute” inflammation, which has been associated with increased cancer risk. To reduce cancer risk, most people need to keep their Body Mass Index (BMI) below 25. For those who are overweight or obese, losing even a small amount of weight has health benefits and is a good place to begin. Eating well can reduce cancer risk. Choose foods and drinks wisely taking into consideration portion sizes, calories and nutritional content. Limit intake of high fat and/or sugar foods and those containing refined carbohydrates. Emphasize whole fruits and vegetables and choose whole grains. Limit intake, frequency and reduce portion size of red meats. Eat a healthy nutrient dense diet and balance energy intake with the necessary physical activity to maintain a healthy weight is essential at all stages of life. Besides quitting smoking, some of the important things a person can do to help reduce cancer risk include: Getting to and staying at a healthy weight throughout life, be physically active, at an appropriate level of intensity and on a regular basis, and make healthy food choices with a focus on plant-based foods.

Please leave them by the Food Chest in the foyer. 5. FOOD CHEST Just a reminder that we have a food chest in our foyer by the coat racks that is hungering for donations of nonperishable food items. These food items are donated regularly to the Inn of the Good Shepherd to help feed the hungry in our neighbourhoods.

It is an excellent resource for parents and kids to track their internet usage. The Internet Filtering software lets you set time limits and block websites based on age customizable parental controls for each of your kids. It also monitors how Internet is used and sends a report to the person you select, such as a friend, parent or mentor. This online transparency helps you think twice about how you use the Web.

FLOWER CHART FOR 2012 An Altar Flower Donation Chart is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway. If you would like to donate flowers sometime in 2012, please sign your name beside the date and contact one of the Altar Guild ladies who are serving on that date (the Altar Guild schedule is on a sheet right beside the Flower Chart). Please arrange to pick up the vase liners and/or delivery of the flowers on the Saturday morning before your chosen date. Please note: If you are donating flowers to be put in front of the pulpit, please specify that because the Altar Guild ladies will then need to make arrangements to have flowers for the altar for that Sunday as well. The office secretary should also be informed of the reason for the donation so that it can be announced in that Sunday’s bulletin. Please contact the office at 519-337-6615.

HELP! HELP! SONSHINE NEEDS HELP! th

Sonshine Singers are starting their 20 year of singing in the early service. Many members are part of the original group. Over the past years our voices have changed and mellowed. We need fresh, new voices to blend in with the old mellowed ones. In addition our membership has decreased and hence we require new members if the group is to continue to support the early service. If you enjoy singing and want to “Praise the Lord with Song”, come out and try it. We practice on Tuesday nights at 6:30. You don’t have to commit to be at church every week. If you are available one or two Sundays a month, you can come for those times. If you need additional information, please contact John Emrich at 519-542-4193 or any “Sonshine Singer” member. Hope to see YOU!

CELEBRATION CHOIR NEEDS How quickly summer has gone! The members of the CELEBRATION CHOIR

have relaxed in the sun, been cooled by the gentle breezes or perhaps have lazed in the cool waters of a pool or the lake. It is now time for them to warm up their voices and get back into the swing of weekly choir practices. They look forward to praising God with those voices. But the choir needs more voices! Would you be willing to lend your voice to the praises of God? It doesn’t matter what type of voice you are, the Celebration Choir is in great need of ALL who are willing to join. The CELEBRATION CHOIR practices on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and will begin on September 8th. Please consider joining us in celebrating God’s love for us. For the past 6 years Redeemer has offered a 6-session grief support program entitled “When Mourning Dawns” a number of times throughout the year. This program uses DVD resources from Willowgreen and from GriefShare and encourages individuals mourning the death of someone close, assisting them to deal with the emotional and personal strain associated with the grieving process. The program, which runs on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. includes DVD presentations, reflections, group sharing, discussion and refreshments. Board of Directors Notes

As your Board of Directors’, we regularly review varying issues of care and concern to this congregation. We have been glad to receive your feedback and input on many matters. The one that has raised most concern in the last few months is our declining worship attendance. This is a concern facing many congregations today. We have been listening to your comments and suggestions, and have wrestled with this issue for several meetings. Much of the discussion has revolved around worship scheduling, and the advantages/disadvantages to one vs. two services. 1 Service

Advantages  Amalgamated congregation – feels more united  Entire congregation has opportunity to fellowship/worship together every Sunday

Disadvantages  No choice of for service timing(early or later)  Worship music styles ... must alternate to offer different styles which then alienates half (portion) of worshiping congregation

CONCURRENT SUNDAY SCHOOL HOUR

Families with limited time still get opportunity to access concurrent service/school

CONCURRENT SUNDAY SCHOOL HOUR

 

Sunday School teachers miss a full service/sermon/Communion every class Children never get an opportunity to experience specific portions of the service

SEPARATE SUNDAY SCHOOL HOUR

 

2 Services

  

Permits children to participate in entire service (if the family attends) Permits teachers to participate in entire service every week

Gives choice for timing of service attendance Gives consistent choice for worship style & music Gives parents the choice of children attending Sunday school during church or at a separate time

SEPARATE SUNDAY SCHOOL HOUR

 

No options for parents to select concurrent (or not) Requires families with Sunday School to be at church for extended period of time (entire Sunday morning)

 

Segmented/divided congregation As numbers dwindle, less inviting to members and visitors alike As numbers dwindle, feels ‘lonely’ --- less ‘volume’ in singing for same persons

From the above, you can see that there is no easy, definitive answer. And after experiencing the positives of summer’s one service (when negative impacts of Sunday school are not apparent), where it reminds us of the best to be offered by one service, we consistently address these same concerns most Septembers. However ... we know that making changes will alienate some members. We experienced that when, years ago shortly after moving from one to two services, we tried to return to one service losing the Sunday school families. Members spoke and the decision was to stay with the initiated two service schedule morning. Three of our sister Lutheran churches in Windsor and Toronto also follow a similar schedule to us here. They expressed concern that they would lose members from worship in total by reverting to one service. The different worship times and styles helped them reach not only existing members but also new members by offering options. Therefore, after much deliberation, we have made a conscious decision to maintain the existing service schedule. That is not to say we are not willing to revisit this issue. But, at this point, we will not reopen this subject until later into 2009. We have many members who are not worshipping on a regular basis for a variety of reasons. If some of these members would recommit to worshipping with God’s family on a more regular basis we would not be having this discussion. We again thank everyone for their contributions and appreciate your ideas & input. Thank you for caring about this congregation! --Redeemer Lutheran – 2008 Board of Directors

A Brief History

ALTAR GUILD DUTIES The Altar Guild prepares the altar area for worship by:  Setting up the communion ware for 2 services each Sunday  Arranging flowers when necessary  Covering the altar, lecturn, pulpit with paraments (coloured hangings for different seasons in the church year)  Setting up for Baptisms  Embroidering baptism napkins (The embroidering of baptismal napkins is done by those interested in doing so.)  Laundering of communion linens used each Sunday  Five teams of three women serve for two consecutive weekends every nine weeks. Setting up on Saturday takes about 20 minutes and clean up on Sundays takes about 20 minutes  Ladies that serve on the laundering team, serve for one month, every five months.  Four times a year the Altar Guild meets for a brief meeting and clean-up of altar area. Communion assistant and acolyte gowns are taken home and laundered. Three women iron the large fair linen that covers the altar.

God will always make you rich enough to be generous at all times, so that many will thank God for your gifts which they receive.

As for the seed that was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit.
