Wearable Sculptures

to the Orkney Craft Trail

The Orkney craft trail is maintained by the Orkney Crafts Association (OCA). Established in the 1990’s, OCA supports Orkney-based professional artisans by promoting their beautifully made products at home and abroad. The aim of the Craft Trail is to make it easy for you, the visitor, to discover some of the amazing range of Orkney Arts and Crafts businesses that thrive on these inspirational islands and whilst doing so explore the sensational landscape that makes these beautiful islands so unique. All you have to do is browse through following pages at the beginning of this brochure and identify the craft members you would like to see more of, and find out more about. Each member has a number in the “standing stone”. 7 Then go to the centre pages where you will find a simple map of Orkney with the main roads clearly marked – find the name and number of your chosen member – and plan your trip. It is as simple as that. Each member’s page has clear simple instructions on how to get there, as well as the opening times etc. Of course, we don’t expect you to limit yourselves to just one visit – so you can also use the map to compile your own personal Craft Trail – visiting all the things that interest you. Zoe Davidson lives in Orkney and works from her small workshop in Stromness. She produces jewellery which is all handmade, dynamic in form and inspired by her love for the island’s historic landscapes and ever-changing seas. Zoe graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Design Degree from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee. Since then, she has traveled and worked with the likes of Haute-Couture/ Fashion Designer: Iris Van Herpen, in Amsterdam, Scottish Jewellery Maker: Gilly Langton, and most recently, with two Orkney-based jewellery companies. Brought up in Brunei Darussalam, in South-East Asia, Zoe spent most of her free time diving under the sea with her family and living with local people. Moving to Orkney was a dramatic change from Brunei’s tropical climate. But being Orcadian at heart, Zoe is passionate about evoking Orkney’s beauty in pieces of wearable sculptures: from the wild seas and dramatic landscapes, to it’s rich history.

A high level of craftmanship is involved in making Zoe’s creations, with traditional silversmithing techniques such as fold-forming and anti-clastic raising. She personally designs and makes all her pieces so making every work utterly unique and special.

Orkneyinga Silversmiths’ Kevin and Liz Allen create handmade work of exceptional quality and originality, drawing much of their inspiration from the landscape, archaeology and wildlife surrounding their hilltop workshop in Birsay. Founded in 1989, Orkneyinga is one of the longest established jewellery businesses in the islands, offering over 30 unique collections in silver and gold. Seventh Wave, Asa, Drostan, Kelpie and Houant are just some of the evocative names found within their range, which includes rings, pendants,

bracelets, earrings and brooches. You’ll also discover curlews, hares and Orkney’s rare Primula Scotica primrose amongst the beautifully made work. Orkneyinga’s approach is highly personal and thoughtful, with attention to detail and a connection to the subject matter always paramount in the designing and making process. It’s this passion and commitment, combined with Kevin and Liz’s desire to create jewellery that will last forever, which has earned Orkneyinga such a loyal following.

‘We invite you to visit Roger Philby at his smallholding overlooking the beautiful and breathtaking Brough and Bay of Birsay. This view overlooks the passage of many whales, dolphins etc.’ It is here Roger designs and makes his exciting and individual marine and wildlife jewellery based on dolphins, whales and other forms of wildlife. One of the things that sets Roger’s jewellery apart is that he makes ‘Flukes’ specific to individual species. His jewellery also includes seahorses, starfish, and the enigmatic shape of the eagle ray, to name but a few. Roger is constantly inspired by Orkney’s wildlife and has added the loveable puffin and the mystical hare to the collection. A very popular range is the ‘cowrie shell’ collection or, as Orcadians call it, the ‘groatie buckie’. It is looked upon as a symbol of good fortune to the lucky shell seeker, as it is not easy to find! This range also includes the Venus shell, and Limpet shell jewellery. Come and visit us at The Woolshed where we use fleece from the native seaweed eating North Ronaldsay breed of sheep to produce traditional knitwear and handmade felt. And while you’re here enjoy the dramatic views over Eynhallow Sound or marvel at the original stonework of the old house and kiln. Handbags or hedgehogs, tea cosies or teddy bears, scarves, mice, wallhangings or whatever we can think of, it is all designed, hand-felted and handmade at the Woolshed. There is also a selection of carded fleece in natural colours and an array of glorious hand dyed tops for felt-makers and spinners. Traditionally styled jumpers are hand knitted or hand framed from North Ronaldsay wool in natural colours, and, for hand knitters, this lovely soft wool is available in 100g balls. Or how about some colourful hand dyed skeins? For that special reminder of Orkney we have 100% North Ronaldsay wool woven rugs with a definite ‘cuddle’ factor, and we now have a small selection of items hand-woven at the woolshed. Alison Moore’s distinctive jewellery is all designed and created in her studio located in the west mainland village of Dounby. Alison’s work reflects her own personal style and she endeavours to create unique pieces that are understated, timeless yet utterly contemporary. As a former geology student, Alison has always been fascinated by minerals and it is this interest and knowledge that defines her collections, sourcing gems from around the globe and sympathetically incorporating them into her creations.

Alison likes to experiment with different silversmithing techniques and is influenced by what is happening around her – whether that is the natural environment, an unusual gemstone, fashion, moods or memories. Described as refined whimsy, some of her collections feature moons and stars, other collections are inspired by twigs and one by the secrets hidden behind lost keys. The end of 2015 saw the beginning of the New Orkney Tweed. Fiona and Nancy Fergus have begun a collaboration which, taking the wool from Nancy’s flock of Zwartbles as the inspiration, is bringing a ready made range of products from sheep to shop. The Orkney Tweeds come from completely natural undyed yarn sourced from small Orkney flocks and is then spun and woven in Shetland into classic traditional timeless patterns. Michael Sinclair Woodturner is a small business owned and run by husband and wife team, Michael and Sara Sinclair from our home in the heart of Neolithic Orkney. Michael is self-taught with over 25 years’ experience working on the lathe. An experienced eye allows him to see the potential in the raw logs, which are then processed on site with our own sawmill, to the finished pieces. The skills and techniques gained over the years allow him to obtain the desired design and quality of finish for each item. He also uses exotic timbers, leather and silver to embellish the timber. All this results in creating unique and bespoke pieces to enhance any home or other surrounding.

The ever-changing moods and colours of Orkney’s wild seas, open skies and rolling landscapes provide the inspiration for artist Ingrid Grieve, who strives to capture the essence of her island homeland through an instinctive and passionate approach to painting. Although Ingrid had long harboured a desire to work as an artist, it wasn’t until she was in her forties that she decided the moment was right to pursue her dream. Giving up full-time work, she undertook formal training at Orkney College, studying first for an HNC and then HND in art. She graduated in 2009, setting up her own studio five years later in the garden of her home in Orphir – toumal is an old Orkney dialect word meaning ‘the field belonging to the house’ – taking full advantage of the site’s spectacular views across the expanse of Scapa Flow. Immensely proud of her Orcadian heritage, Ingrid’s work is very much about place. You won’t find any people in her paintings, but she’ll often incorporate some elements of human interaction with the Orkney environment, recognising the part generations of farmers and fishermen have played in shaping the landscape. Visitors are welcome at her Orphir studio, where her work can be viewed and bought. Ingrid also produces prints of her oils and regularly exhibits throughout the islands.

You are invited to visit Fraser Anderson’s award-winning bespoke furniture and witness a craft centuries in the making. Orkney Hand Crafted Furniture specialises in the production of Orkney chairs, a design unique to the Islands, whilst also designing pieces of bespoke furniture It has been my ambition to create furniture from wood from a young age, as a Orcadian, the opportunity to craft these unique chairs has seen this ambition fulfilled. It is very satisfying to keep a long-standing tradition alive. The challenge of being able to produce Orkney chairs from natural Orcadian materials such as driftwood and straw, whilst exploring modern variations, led me to establish my business in 2004. Orkney Hand Crafted Furniture is now successfully producing traditional chair designs whilst moving the craft forward with innovative designs. As the business has developed, there is a variety of traditional and modern pieces of furniture also available such as mirrors, creepies, Orkney stools, tables, rustic furniture, cabinets, outdoor furniture and special commissions.

“I’m inspired by where I live” Sheila was brought up on a farm in South Ronaldsay in a landscape marked by time. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art and went on to gain an OBE and Honorary Degree. Her distinctive designs are collected all over the world and are known for their vibrant enamel colours and fine hand finish. Over the years many of Sheila’s collections have been influenced by the island’s rich heritage and the creative talents of our ancestors. The ancient script on our Ogham collection pictured opposite reads “A blessing on the soul”. Orkney is the home of Sheila Fleet Jewellery. From her workshop in Holm, Celina creates her collections of Jewellery which are inspired by Orkney’s beautiful landscape and heritage. We are focused on providing a high quality service and customer satisfaction. Celina has lived in Orkney for the majority of her life and now lives in the Parish of Holm with her family. Celina has gained much of her experience from working within the jewellery trade, learning the fine skills required for her hand crafted pieces. It is the breathtaking landscape of the Orkney Islands, which gives her the inspiration for her unique collections. The gallery shows the wide range original watercolours, oils and prints by Bert Simpson a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art now living and working in the village of St.Marys. He has worked in design, has been a potter but painting has always played a central role in his life and the gallery show the wide and varied range of his work. As an islander he portrays a strong sense of the islands in his landscapes, seascapes and still life painting. His work reflects the character and atmosphere of a gentle pastoral landscape which rolls down to meet a dominant and ever changing seascape. The surrounding sea reflects a special light from the huge skies and together they create captivating moods and drama.

The town and villages of Orkney hug the coast and create their own special vernacular style in places that the land meets the sea and where you find echoes of a time when the fruits of both have merged to meet the

The Workshop is a craft producers’ co-operative in the picturesque village of St Margaret’s Hope. It was established in 1978 for the benefit of local craftspeople and specialises in high quality knitwear and Orcadian crafts. Created using beautiful yarns and contemporary classic designs, the Workshop’s unique range of knitwear combines traditional hand-knitting skills with intriguing patterns based on motifs inspired by the sea and the island way of life. The Workshop is also a showcase for an impressive range of the best in local art and crafts including jewellery, ceramics, textiles, prints, photographs and cards. The Loft Gallery is a delightful small gallery, flooded with natural light and providing an intimate venue for exhibitions throughout the season.

Leila Thomson graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and returned home to Orkney to work, creating large, unique, handwoven tapestries inspired by the rhythm of life and landscape of Orkney. the Gallery opened in June 1996 with visitors and commissions coming from all around the world. Now joined by daughter, Jo, a painting graduate from Edinburgh College of Art and son, Andrew, they have created a diverse and exciting family business. A wide range of products are available to purchase at the gallery: tapestries, drawings, paintings, cards, prints and handcrafted Shetland wool rugs.

From our workshop, located on Westray, one of the most northerly of the Orkney Islands, we create a range of the knitted garments and home textiles. Taking inspiration from the colours and textures of the environment around us and using natural, luxury yarns, we aim to create products which, whilst reflective of our island, are equally at home anywhere in the world. Our shop overlooks Pierowall Bay and is a stones throw from the beach. Our Workshop is situated at the back of our premises. Visit us here in Westray where you will be able to browse at your leisure and view a more extensive range of our products. Like a number of the other members of the Orkney Craft Trail Bill McArthur is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art. His seascapes, primarily done in oils, derive from his many years spent working as a commercial fisherman round the Scottish coasts and as far afield as St Kilda and Rockall. They also reflect the beautiful beaches and coastline of Sanday where he and his family have lived for many years Prints of many of his paintings are also available in a range of sizes from the studio.

From the ferry at Loth take the road towards the Start Lighthouse but when you come to the sign at the turn-off for the lighthouse keep to the narrow main road which then takes a very steep left turn. Half a mile along this road you will see the Nortwa’ Studio signs on the left..

Quality hand made Art and Crafts from Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre The Crafthub opened in May 2013 as a Community run social enterprise, providing an art and craft retail outlet and workshop space on Rousay. The products on sale in the shop are a variety of unique, quality hand-made art and craft products mainly produced locally by art and crafts people living on our 3 islands, Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre, with a few selected items from the craft network in Orkney. The majority have been influenced by local traditions, heritage and the breath-taking surroundings of our islands. When we opened we had 15 crafters exhibiting their products, there are now over 60 crafters, with an impressive range of quality hand made products including textiles, paintings, cards, wood, glass, photographs, jewellery, pottery and much more. There are also regular traditional craft workshops at The Crafthub, for both adults and children to join, as well as informal drop in sessions and craft demonstrations. The island of Rousay is situated off West Mainland, easy to access for a day trip. Take the A966 from Finstown to Tingwall ferry. Then take the 20 minute ferry to Rousay Pier. The Crafthub is situated 2 minutes walk up from Rousay pier on the right hand side.

Display cabinets showing our members’ work are also located at Kirkwall Airport, the Stromness NorthLink Ferry Terminal and the Kirkwall Tourist Information Centre.

Not all members workshops are suitable for public access, and in the next section you will find adverts and information on OCA members who are not on the Craft Trail, but who sell their products in various local shops. Celia Clark is an artist working in two contrasting ways. She works digitally, manipulating photographs to produce creative images with a graphic feel that explores detail, colour and line and she also works in a more organic way painting with encaustic wax exploring the sea and surrounding landscape of Orkney. There are cards, prints, canvases and encaustic wax pieces available and visitors are very welcome to pop into the gallery, shop and studio to see Celia and her work. The gallery is located on the A960 about 6 miles from Kirkwall. It’s on the right hand side about 3/4 mile after the Quoyburray Inn and just before The Sebay Mill.
