Mission Moment

Joyful Noiz

From a young age I sat in the front pews of Zion Mennonite church listening to countless examples of how members of our congregation were selflessly serving in areas all over the world. This instilled in me a desire for service that I have carried with me throughout my time in the youth group at this church, to my undergraduate years, and is something that I continue to seek avenues to participate in. It was through the support of this church that I had the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua this March to serve with my fellow students in the Arcadia University Physician Assistant Program and act as the Co-president for our trip. Our program worked with the Global Brigades organization to set up a free health clinic in the rural community of El Coyolito. Global Brigades is a nonprofit organization that seeks to provide holistic and sustainable solutions in under-resourced areas. There are various chapters including business, human rights, and medical, which aim to empower the individuals that are served and provide them with the tools to improve the health and economic disparities that exist. Each student on our medical brigade was responsible for fundraising about $1,750 to cover the cost of their travel expenses as well as contribute to an extensive list of medical supplies we were responsible for bringing in order to run a successful clinic. Additionally, we needed to purchase all the medications we would provide for the community. Once arriving in Nicaragua, we spent the first day organizing and packing all of the medicines we would distribute in clinic. We provided each individual with a three-month supply, which would provide them with enough medication until the next brigade came. The next three days were spent in clinic, seeing members of the community for health concerns such as musculoskeletal pain, parasite related symptoms, and diabetes and high blood pressure control. As students, we worked

alongside both American and Nicaraguan doctors and physician assistants to take medical histories, perform physical exams and simple lab tests, and discuss treatment options. In just three days of clinic we were able to see and treat just shy of 800 individuals. Additionally, we had educational programs for the children of the community to teach the importance of preventative care such as hand washing, and dental hygiene. A dentist and a women’s health doctor were also available in the clinic, and we were able to refer many of our patients to use their services. On our last day in country, we had the opportunity to go out into the communities and participate in a public health day. We traveled several hours to a community called El Salto where we put in concrete floors to help to prevent some of the major health concerns in the region, such as parasites and other insect-borne diseases. This public health day allowed us to see why the illnesses that we saw in clinic were so prevalent and to work towards preventing them from appearing in the first place. The houses that we worked in were single room homes with an average of 3-4 people living there. They had no electricity or running water, and just an open fire to cook over. Throughout the course of the day we were able to put in concrete floors in four of the homes in the community. This was the most impactful day of the trip for me, as it allowed us to see and speak with individuals in their homes. While Nicaragua provides a beautiful mountainous landscape, it is currently being plagued by a two-year drought that is putting great economic stress on a country whose main source of income is agriculture. Nicaragua is also the second poorest country in Latin America, and access to things such as health care are severely limited. Despite their humble circumstances, the people in the communities were incredibly patient, kind, and grateful for all that they did have. While they continued to express their gratitude toward our service, it was the students in our program who felt truly blessed for being able to learn about their culture, gain clinical experience, and make a small difference in a very deserving community. My sincerest thank you’s to this church and congregation for your continued support, and for instilling in me this desire to serve. With your help, close to 800 members of a resource-deprived community in Nicaragua were able to receive free health care and for that I feel extremely blessed and grateful.

Food Donation Request for Student Summer Aid Food Every student looks forward to school ending and summer break. But for a surprisingly large group of local students this can be a time of increased risk for food insecurity. 20% of our area's students receive reduced or free breakfast and lunch at school. These students’ parents may struggle to meet the increase food needs throughout the summer months. To help these families, Keystone's Food Pantry has created the Summer Aid Program to provide "kid-friendly food" to enrolled pantry participants throughout the summer. We are reaching out to our faithful Keystone Food Pantry donors for assistance in meeting this need by donating "kid-friendly" food bags to help these children. Presently there are over 450+ students registered for the Keystone Food Pantry. We want to make sure each child has all the food they need this summer. Here is how you can help. Please fill a reusable shopping bag with these types of items: Macaroni and Cheese (Microwavable) Juice boxes, Drink mixes Breakfast Cereal (Family Size) Peanut Butter and Jelly Crackers, Animal Crackers, Cookies Fruit Snacks Meals like: SpaghettiOs (meat), Ravioli Tuna (3 cans) and Mayo (small jar) Pudding and Fruit Cups Granola and Cereal Bars Cake Mixes, Icing, Brownie Mixes Pretzels Thank you so much for your willingness to help these students and their families who need our support to have a healthy and safe summer. No child should face the summer months with fear of not having enough food. We are requesting that "kid- friendly" food bags be dropped off at Keystone's Food Pantry. This will ensure that the children will have them as soon as possible. This is a great way to introduce your children to helping others. Maybe you want to consider doing the Summer Aid Program food drive as a neighborhood project, summer sports team project, or as a project for your office staff.

Table of Plenty The Table of Plenty is going on 25 years of service to the community.  Here is a summary of some of the ways the Table of Plenty has been a blessing to the community and to Zion.  I am so grateful to all who have contributed in making this ministry such a gift for the good of all.

Overall Purpose:  Below is a list of some of the ways in which the Table of Plenty has impacted the community.  What you can’t see here is the love, care, compassion, and friendships that have been the most important part of the Table.  All the volunteers that have helped through the years have had the same commitment that I have had and the same love and respect for all those who have participated in the lunches and dinners.    Not only is the Table of Plenty a place where the body is fed, but more importantly, the soul.  It is a place where we share in the communion of friendship as well as food.  A place where the lonely come to find conversation and companionship if only for a brief time during the week.  They bring their joys, their tears and concerns and most importantly feel loved and respected.  This is what you don’t see on paper.  It is only through the heart that one can really see and understand. Over the years there has been tremendous support from all the Pastors and the Administrative Assistants who helped make my job easier.   During that time there was a great feeling of kindness, mutual support, respect and caring for everyone and I am eternally grateful and thankful for all they have and continue to contribute to the Table.  It was always our intention that The Table of Plenty would support the good name of Zion in the community.  Through the years we have received wonderful feedback from the community in support of the Table.   From the very beginning, I have dedicated this ministry to the Honor and Glory of Almighty God.    Overall Summary:  Approximate number of meals served – 102,960  Volunteers – Over 40,000 hours of unpaid service; including over 8,000 hours by Janet Hartzell.

The Daily Positive Your best is good enough. If you're like me, you're really hard on yourself. And, if you're like me, you're bad at getting yourself off your couch to exercise. Some days it's bad anxiety, some days it's being busy, some days it's plain laziness. For whatever reason, some days I end up not working out at all. The other day, I went outside and ran a single mile. According to my personal work out routine, that's not up to par. I wasn't feeling well, though, and that mile felt like the whole thing was up-hill. It was all I could do. I still felt down on myself. Later I told a friend about my measly mile after he shared he ran four miles. I said wow, that's a lot better than what I did. I did nothing. No, he said. Zero is nothing. You did something. Sometimes, something is the best we've got. It may not feel like we're going out there and conquering the world like we want to, but each something we do is a step. That uphill mile we're running, all we can do to get through it is go step by step. Stop comparing your best to someone else's best, because someone else's best is always going to be different than yours. Instead of comparing your best, just do it. That's the best thing anyone can do.

Family Service Sunday On Sunday, August 21, we will be having our first Family Service Sunday at Zion. For all of you who have wanted to do some volunteer time at the Material Resource Center but have been unable to get there do to schedules, we will be bringing the MRC to Zion. This has been brought about by thoughts of wanting to do something for our world community, but with our congregation here at Zion, doing it together. The plan is to have a small service time in the sanctuary singing a few hymns and a meditation time lasting about 20 minutes. We will then move to the fellowship hall where tables will be set up for us to do “kits” and also a quilt frame or two to do knotting, for those who want something different. This is a “whole family” time of teaching and learning about service, in the atmosphere of working alongside our Zion brothers and sisters. We will stop around 11:30 for a simple lunch. There will be more information in the next couple of weeks coming, so please just put this date on your calendar now – it will be a lot of fun working together for a common good – all of God’s children throughout the world.

News & Views In my lifetime, and when I was young, on a cloudless night, I was able to see the Milky Way Galaxy. You know, that’s the galaxy that our solar system resides in. If there is any doubt that we should do our part as a nation, to clear up, or clean up our atmosphere, because of the fact that in the areas around our cities, you cannot see the Milky Way at night. This is just one example of mankind’s effect on our planet. Of course there is fracking, oil drilling, surface mining, that is destroying our clean water, marring our natural scenery, and causing acid runoff in our watersheds, and in the case of Oklahoma, numerous earthquakes. Many wars of the past have started because of the need for other national powers to acquire natural resources. In Southeast Asia it was rubber tree plants, in the near east it was oil. Wherever there was a need for any resource there could be a skirmish. Can you imagine what it would be like if we went to clean and plentiful solar, wind, and tidal energy systems? Not only would we clean up our atmosphere, and perhaps reverse global warming, we would also contribute to peace in the world because we would not need to fight for coal, oil, uranium, or any fuel that makes dirty power. The point is, we would then be true to our commitment to have responsible dominion over the Earth without the continued abuse of this, God provided, beautiful place in the universe.

Directory Time! It is time to update our Zion congregation portrait directory! We have contracted with Lifetouch to take portraits at the church and provide the printed directories to the congregation. We have scheduled July 8 & 9, and August 5 & 6 for the initial portrait sessions. There may be additional times added if necessary. We encourage all families of the congregation to participate in this event. This directory is only done every 5 years and provides many useful purposes for the congregation. Among others it will:  Serve as a get acquainted document for the new Pastor  Be a resource for new members/new attendees  Be a visual reminder while praying for individuals or families  Remind us of the history and breadth of the congregation from our youngest children to the wisdom of our elders Each family, couple or individual will receive a free directory, and those that schedule a portrait time will also receive a free 8”x10” portrait from the session. The committee is hoping to schedule the majority of the congregation. However, if scheduling a time with Lifetouch at the church truly cannot be worked out, a personal picture can also be submitted for the directory. Stop by the sign-up table on Sunday mornings or use the online sign-up link you will find in the weekly Zion email and bulletin. Please see Rod Kratz, Terri Musselman or Valerie Smith with any questions.

Youth of all ages are invited to join in the fun Wednesday evenings starting July 13 and ending August 17. Races start promptly at 6:00pm so bring the kids to participate or come out to be a spectator! In past years thanks to your generous donations, every runner has received a Capri Sun and a small individual snack such as a granola bar or bag of goldfish as they crossed the finish line. If you would like to continue that tradition and donate a box of Capri Suns, some mini water bottles or individually wrapped snacks, please place them in the box in the office designated for the Wednesday Night Races. We appreciate your support!

Going on Vacation….. Just a reminder before heading on vacation or your busy summer schedule begins, please sign up for electronic giving. It's easy and quick to designate your offering automatically to insure your financial gifts and tithes continue to be given to Zion regularly. Simply go to the church's website: www.zionmennonite.org and scroll down to the blue circle on the right hand side of the screen designated for online giving. Click on the icon and complete the information page which will be sent securely to the company processing our funds. To date, we collect approximately $14,000 per month from online giving. Thank you for looking into this option so Zion can continue to receive funds on a regular basis to meet all the church's ongoing programs. If you have any questions, please contact Janice Godshall, the financial secretary for the church, or anyone on the finance committee.
