Using the SD Flash Memory Module This chapter describes the Secure Digital (SD) flash memory module (or SD card) that is used with the Cisco ME3800, ME3600 and ME3600X-24CX Switches, and includes instructions for installing and removing the SD card. This chapter contains the following sections: •
SD Flash Memory Module, page 33-547
•
SD Card Status, page 33-548
•
Commands, page 33-551
SD Flash Memory Module The router features an SD card slot, which supports a single Cisco SD flash memory module (SD card) and SD High Capacity (SDHC). The SD card stores router data and software, including: •
Switch operating software
•
Running configurations
•
Network management software configuration
•
Network registration data
•
Switch firmware
•
Crashinfo file and core dump on sdflash
•
Syslog messages
•
Archive download of latest IOS from the tar image present on sdflash
SD Card File System
The SD card uses a DOSFS file system. The switch configuration is stored in a binary file in an invisible partition on the card.

SD Card Status
Supported SD Cards Table 33-1 lists the SD cards that can be used with the router. Table 33-1
Accessing the SD Card The SD card and SD card LED are accessed from the switch front panel, though the switch SD card slot, shown in Figure 33-1.
Caution
Do not remove the SD card from the router; removing the SD card will cause the router to stop operating.
SD Card Status You can check the SD card status by viewing the SD Card LED.
SD Card LED The SD card LED is located directly next to the SD card slot. This section describes the LED states and descriptions. Figure 33-1
SD Flash Memory Module LED States
Description
Color and State
Description
SD card status
Green solid
SD flash card is installed and operating normally.
Green blinking
A data transfer between the switch and the SD card is in progress.
Amber solid
An error occurred when the router accessed the SD flash card.
Off
No SD card is installed in slot.
Insertion and Removal of Card The sd card is not hot swappable. When the SD card is inserted and removed the syslog messages shown below are logged:

Using the SD Flash Memory Module Configuration Restrictions
Insertion: *Jan 15 06:54:54.843: SDFLASH has been inserted!
Removal: *Jan 15 06:54:43.775: SDFLAH has been removed!
Note
The sdflash should not be removed while sdflash write is in progress.
Configuration Restrictions The following restriction affect the SD Flash: •
The FPGA should be ready before the SD flash is initialized.
•
Sdflash does not support nvram partition.
Configuring SD Flash Card To configure SD flash card feature use the following steps. •
Transferring Running Configuration
•
Transferring Start-up Configuration
Transferring Running Configuration To transfer running configuration file from one system to another use the following steps: Step 1
Insert sd flash card in first system Switch# Run
Step 2
Use copy running-config command to copy running-config to the sd flash card: Switch# copy running-config
Step 3
sdflash:config.txt
When copy operation is completed, remove the sd flash card from the first system and insert sd flash card in second system. Ensure SD Flash LED is ON. Switch# Run
Step 4
Use config replace command to overwrite existing configuration. Switch(config)# config replace sdflash:config.txt To apply all necessary additions and deletions, and to replace the current running configuration with the contents of the specified configuration file, which is assumed to be a complete configuration, not a partial configuration. Enter Y if you are sure you want to proceed. ?[no]: Y Total number of passes: 1 Rollback Done

Configuring SD Flash Card
Transferring Start-up Configuration To transfer start-up configuration file from one system to another use the following steps: Step 1
Insert the sd flash card in first system Switch# Run
Step 2
Use copy tftp command to copy startup configuration file. Switch# copy tftp:://...sdflash: copy data from TFTP to sdflash
Step 3
When copy operation is completed, remove the sd flash card from the first system and insert sd flash card in second system. Ensure SD Flash LED is ON.
Note Step 4
Ensure the SD card is inserted and has the startup-config file on it.
Use logging file sdflash command to enable copying of syslogs to sdflash: Switch(config)# logging file sdflash:syslogname.log nomax 7
Step 5
Use boot config-file sdflash command to configure system to use configuration on SD Flash while booting. Switch(config)# boot config-file sdflash:sample_config.text
Step 6
Use the boot system sdflash:image_name command to use image from sd flash card while booting. Switch(config)# boot system sdflash:sample_image
Step 7
Use the boot config-file sdflash:startup-config command to set boot with the configuration file on sd flash card. Switch(config)# boot config-file sdflash:startup-config
Step 8
Use the logging file sdflash:syslog.log nomax 7 command to set the syslog messages to be saved onto to sd flash card Switch(config)# logging file sdflash:syslog.log nomax 7
Step 9
Use the archive download-sw /overwrite sdflash:.tar command to archive download from sd flash card Switch# archive download-sw /overwrite sdflash:.tar
Configure Core and Crash information To configure the system to dump core and crash files into sd flash card use the following steps: Step 1
Use exception flash all sdflash: command to dump core and crash info files to the sdflash card: Switch(config)# exception flash all sdflash: crashinfo file name
Step 2
Use the exception core-file command to set core dump filename: Switch(config)# exception core-file core name compressed timestamp
