Scientific activities Currently responsible at CNR IPCF Bari Division for the material chemistry activities aiming to design, fabricate and process inorganic solids at the nanoscale. The main activities include: -

Synthesis of nanoparticles, also in quantum confinement regime, with control on size shape and crystalline phase, in order to finely tune their chemical-physical properties

Functionalization of the nanoparticles with surface chemistry exchange procedures

Characterization of the colloidal nanoparticles with spectroscopical UV-vis-NIR absorption, luminescence, FTIR, XPS), structural (transmission microscope, X-ray powder diffraction) and morphological (AFM) techniques

-

Organization in mesoscopical structures (films, 2/3 D assemblies, polymer based nanocomposites, hybrid electrodes) of the prepared nano-objects with tailored functional properties

Investigation of the unusual size-and shape-dependent (photo)catalytic and opto-electronic properties of the newly fabricated nanostructured materials carried out to assess their technological potential for their use in environmental technologies (water treatments and sensing applications) and their integration in systems and devices

In particular the following projects have been performed: •

Set up of flexible synthetic strategies to obtain a wide range of nanoparticles (TiO2, ZnO, CdS, CdSe, CdSe@ZnS –core-shell, ZnSe, and TiO2/Ag, TiO2, /Au coupled systems, Fe2O3, PbS) with a good control on size, shape and crystalline phase



Functionalization of colloidal nanocrystals by modification of the surface chemistry of the nanoobjects for make them compatible with a variety of physical and chemical environment, including bioconjugation for biological applications



Organization of the nanoparticles in 2/3 D structures by assembly, either spontaneous or directed, soft lithography, layer-by-layer, standard deposition techniques (spin coating, casting)



Preparation and characterization of nanocomposites based on organic polymer and semiconductor nanocrystals, their deposition as thin film



Nanocrystal based nanocomposites for micro and nanofabrication by means of either conventional and emerging lithographyc techniques, such as UV microstructuring, Nano Imprint Lithography, ink jet printing



Hybrid heterojunctions based on conducting conjugated polymers and semiconducting inorganic nanocrystals for energy conversion experiments



Modified electrodes formed by nanocrystal based films and sensitizer, such as phtalocyanins: photoelectrochemical investigation



Test of the optelectronic properties of the prepared materials in optical sensing elements



Photodegradation of organic compounds in aqueous and organic environment assisted by oxide nanoparticles



Synthesis of metal/oxide nanocrystal nanocomposite and their application in red-ox processes as bifunctional photocatalysts and charge storage experiments

Teaching and tutorial activities -

Tutorial activities for degree and doctoral projects at the Department of Chemistry University of Bari – Bari (Italy), being co-supervisor of 12 students for their Master (Laurea) project, and advisor for 8 PhD candidates since 1998.
