Programming Activity Board 1 (PAB1) Assembly Plan This section of the lab manual is designed to guide the user through each part of circuit board construction. Be sure to follow the steps in the order they are provided. These steps are organized from easiest to hardest with regard to assembly. The assembly plan is organized as shown below;

Programming Activity Board 1 (PAB1) Assembly Plan Step by step instructions: Follow the instructions in the order they are provided. They have been organized to help prevent solder errors. The parts are assembled in an easiest to most difficult order so that students can gain better technique as they move to more difficult areas. 1. Locate the fourteen 100 Ohm resistors (Brown Black, Brown, Gold) R1 –R10, R12, R14, R17 and R19. The resistors should be installed with the brown stripe toward the left side of the board. Use needle nose pliers to carefully bend the legs to 90 degrees at the length established by the
holes in the board. Once
the legs are bent,
place the resistors in the
holes and push them
down flat to the surface of
the board. With your hands, bend the legs back that have pushed through the board so that the resistor will stay in place as you turn the board over to solder the resistor. Next, solder the resistor in place. Remember to use only the amount of solder to secure the leads to the board. Clip the excess resistor lead flush with the top of the solder joint. Repeat the process for each of the fourteen resistors. 2. Locate the five 10k resistors (Brown, Black, Orange, Gold) R11, R13, R15, R16 and R18 should be installed with the brown stripe toward the left side of the board. Use needle nose pliers to carefully bend
the legs to 90 degrees at
the length established by the holes in the board. Once the legs are bent, place the resistors in the holes and push them down flat to the surface of the board. With your hands, bend the legs back that have pushed through the board so that the resistor will stay in place as you turn the board over to solder the resistor. Next, solder the resistor in place. Remember to use only the amount of solder to secure the leads to the board. Clip the excess resistor lead flush with the top of the solder joint. Repeat the process for each of the five resistors. © Kevin Pace

3. Locate the five tactile N.O. pushbuttons PB1 – PB5. Each pushbutton should fit directly into the holes provided and rest flat against the board. One at a time, select a pushbutton and place it in the correct holes.
Press the pushbutton all the way
down to the board and
carefully bend the leads back at
about 45 degrees to hold
the part steady while you flip the
board over to solder the
leads. Repeat the process for
each of the five pushbuttons. 4. Locate the six female header strips. These are the socket strips that allow the Programming Activity Board to be connected to the Robot Control Board male headers. They are installed on the
bottom side of the board with
the male pins pressing up
through the top of the board.
Turn the board over on the
back side and install the female
headers in the top three 10 pin rows (side by side). Use a piece of masking tape to tape the rows into place on the back side of the board. Be sure that all the headers are FLAT against the board after they are taped. The male pins should be sticking up through the top side of the board. Carefully turn the board back over and solder each pin into place on the top side. Be careful not to bridge (connect) pins together. Each pin must be soldered separately. After they are soldered, carefully remove the tape from the bottom of the board. Repeat the same process for the female headers that are to be mounted on lower three 10 pin rows.

5. Locate the 3 Red LED’s (L1, L4, L7). Each LED has a flat side around the bottom ring which marks the negative terminal. Polarity MUST be observed when installing LED’s or the circuit will not work.
Each LED will be mounted with
the negative lead closest to
the bottom edge of the board.
Starting with L1, place the
led into the proper hole following
the white outline. Place 1
LED into the board and carefully
bend the leads back at 45 degrees to hold the LED into place. Carefully turn the board over and solder each lead. Be sure that the LED is FLAT against the board. Repeat the procedure for L4 and L7. 6. Locate the 3 Yellow LED’s (L2, L5, L8). Each LED has a flat side around the bottom ring which marks the negative terminal. Polarity MUST be observed when installing LED’s or the circuit will not work.

7. Locate the 3 Green LED’s (L3, L6, L9). Each LED has a flat side around the bottom ring which marks the negative terminal. Polarity MUST be observed when installing LED’s or the circuit will not work.
Each LED will be mounted with the

with L3, place the led into
the proper hole following the white
outline. Place 1 LED into
the board and carefully bend the
leads back at 45 degrees to hold the LED into place. Carefully turn the board over and solder each lead. Be sure that the LED is FLAT against the board. Repeat the procedure for L6 and L9. 8. Locate the Piezo Speaker. The speaker does not have polarity and may be installed in either direction. Place the
speaker into the holes in the
center of the board. Be
sure the piezo speaker is resting
flat against the board.
Place a piece of tape over the
peizo speaker to hold the
device in place. Carefully turn the
board over and solder the pins. Remove the tape from the speaker.
At this point, ALL the circuit board parts should be soldered into place. Be sure that the female headers are close together so that Programming Activity Board 1 can be placed onto the Robot Control Board. Each female socket MUST line up with each male header pin so that PAB1 can be pressed into place.
