FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10 This is a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah to Jerusalem. He will come, not as a King, but as a humble savior, riding on an ass. Second Reading: Romans 8:9, 11-13 Contrasting “flesh and spirit,” Paul urges that all who live for material things abandon the temptations of the flesh and rise to life in the “Spirit.” Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30 Jesus speaks lovingly and gently when he invites all those who are weary and burdened with life to seek relief and respite in him. He says, “Your souls will find rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden light.”

A Summer Prayer Long warm days... The pace of life slows... A time for picnics and rest in the shade... Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence. Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all your people. Amen. - Author unknown

Turning to God

It has become so easy to get distracted and pulled from our course, our focus. With the troubled times we are all faced with, coupled with our own trials and tribulations, we tend to forget to turn to God for help.

The theme of today’s Gospel reading “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest … for my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Mt 11:28-30 reaffirms to us that God’s help is here for the taking when we’re tired and over-burdened, helpless and hopeless. As nations, communities and individuals struggling not only to keep true to religious, public and humanitarian obligations, the burden the bible speaks of does not end here, but also includes the struggle of personal success, as we try to compete with the demands of the world today. God is here for us. He always was and always will be. The Bible tells us that back in the days of Moses when he felt overwhelmed with the enormous task of leading his people from captivity in Egypt to the promised land, that he too turned to God many times for help. God was there for Moses, providing him with wisdom, guidance and the direction that he should select others to assist him in accomplishing his mission. Like Moses, as we become overburdened with all we see, feel and hear, and we find that we’re becoming affected – spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically - we should remember to ask God for help. We cannot let our faith in God and his help be shaken. In stressful situations, the best thing we can do is to turn to God for his wisdom. Ask the Holy Spirit for decisiveness. Assure ourselves in times of weakness that we have strength, just as Jesus did while carrying out the will of the Father. God knows what we’re dealing with. Remember the old cliché – do the right thing and the right thing happens? Well, sometimes we may not see results right away, and sometimes we may not ever see them at all. But God does not forget. Through our faith, we can be assured that the good thoughts, deeds and decisions we make on a daily basis will bring us through our times of crisis, and in the end, will have lead us ever closer to our destination – everlasting happiness for eternity in heaven. ~ By Cathy Beck
