ABSTRACT:

Objective: In unilateral benign non-toxic goiter, resection may involve either unilateral or total thyroidectomy, each having its own advantages and disadvantages. This study aimed to evaluate the results of ipsilateral lobectomy in unilateral non-toxic benign nodular goiter and to define predictive factors for recurrence. Methods: A total of 104 patients undergoing thyroid lobectomy for unilateral non-toxic benign nodular goiter between 2002 and 2007 were included. Potential predictors of recurrence including age, gender, family history, pre-operative size of the thyroid gland, number, size, and ultrasound characteristics of the preoperative nodules, duration of postoperative follow-up, postoperative use of thyroxine, and histopathological diagnoses were recorded at baseline and patients were followed for the development of recurrence. Results: Patients were operated for adenoma (n=45), colloidal nodular goiter (n=45), or thyroiditis (n=14). Average duration of follow-up was 39.75±21.75 months (range: 5-87). Recurrence was seen in 63 (60.57%) patients. Based on multivariate analysis, histopathology of the lobectomy material (p
