DEVELOPMENT FOR LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE

The Leadership Trust Foundation was established in 1975 by David Gilbert-Smith, a former SAS Officer. David brought his ideas and experiences of developin g leadership for high performance in very testing conditions, combined them with organisational and behavioural psychology and successfully applied them to c ivilian contexts. We provide high-impact leadership development for directors, managers and individuals on their leadership journeys. We work across all UK sectors and internationally and are a recognised leader in the field of experiential learning for leadership effectiveness. From the beginning, we have held firmly to the view that skillful and enabled leadership, dispersed throughout an organisation forms the backbone of a high performance culture; improving the customer experience, achieving results faster, as well as fostering a more fulfilling working environment...the so-called triple bottom line. We believe leadership is something that can be learned, developed and improved. Our core philosophy is that “one needs to know and control oneself first before one can lead and enable others effectively” 5 We work with all of our clients within three key stages of development: mobilisation, maturity and mastery. Our highly qualified faculty, with first-hand experience of leadership, are selected from diverse backgrounds to assist learners achieve their development objectives. Our approach is based upon accompanying our learners around the experiential cycle on multiple occasions – on programmes, courses and in coaching – so that development is individualised and consolidated – with its application supported in the workplace. It works.

LEADERSHIP IN MANAGEMENT

Organisations live or die by the leadership shown by management. In the current do-more-with-less climate getting the most out of people is crucial. Those that excel rightly earn themselves bigger and better roles. Roles that usually require them to lead more people. All too often that’s when they stumble. They’re expected to be able to walk the talk, almost by instinct. Left on their own at best they’ll muddle through. At worst you’ll lose their talent somewhere else. But, it doesn’t have to be like that. Our renowned Leadership in Management course has been updated to become a bigger intervention designed to expose the learnable art of leadership. It’s a highly intensive experience that provides a comprehensive grounding in the core principles of effective, personal leadership. Ideal for those experienced managers who lead teams or are starting to lead other team leaders. It is also has an ILM development programme Certificate with access to 6 months ILM membership and online learning materials.

LEADing WITH IMPACT

How we manage 'impact' is critical to the way we lead ourselves and others. If managed well good results usually follow. We see 'impact' all around us. The most obvious impact is the one we have upon others and their impact upon us. But it would be a mistake to ignore our impact upon our surroundings and it upon us. An even bigger oversight would be to skip over the impact on ourselves from within. Our thoughts and feelings can have a real impact upon our leadership performance. We call these The Five Impacts and this is personal development for leadership effectiveness and personal wellbeing. Leading with impact, now including Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) development programme Certificate, explores 'impact' from all aspects and offers an opportunity for deeper insights into our own personal leadership. It is just right for managers looking to take their leadership skills to the next level and for those who may have led for a while and discovered that leadership is not easy!

coaching skillS for leaders

There has always been the case in high performance organisations and teams where acts of leadership are required and expected from people irrespective of their place in the hierarchy. What we now see in the workplace is a gradual but definite shift away from rigid structures and automatic deference to authority towards a more fluid, and, often, geographically dispersed set up in which people at all levels are seeking engagement and want to make a difference. In these environments leaders must be able to coach. Our coaching skills for leaders course will equip you to broaden your leadership capability in order to thrive in today’s complex workplace.

COACHING skills for leaders COURSE

On your Leadership Development Journey we’d describe you as Leading Leaders with Maturity. “The Coaching Skills for Leaders course is very varied and learning came when least expected. Like all Leadership Trust courses, I learned as much about myself as new skills.” Nadine Ralph, Service Segment Manager, Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society

The overview... Leading LEADERS

You don’t need to be a Guru…

LEADING SELF

Coaching is about enabling someone to think through a problem that is facing them in order to arrive at a clear and energising way forward for themselves. Coaching is simple but it is not easy. It is a craft that requires training, determination, humility and continual practice if you want to do it well.

Phased yet flexible... We have designed this course to be flexible enough to accommodate the emerging needs of the participants and we’ll check in regularly to make sure you’re getting what you came for. The course has four linked phases: i.We begin with a review of the fundamental principles of coaching ii.Then we’ll introduce a coaching model and process to provide an underpinning structure to your work iii. Then, as you apply these ideas in real coaching conversations with fellow participants, we’ll guide you towards the development of your own, personal style iv.Finally we’ll explore the practicalities of coaching your colleagues in your workplace; designing your own specific approach to working with direct reports, peers and even those more senior in your organisation structure.

MATURITY

Over three intensive days you will have multiple opportunities to coach, be coached and observe others coaching. Feedback on your practice will be provided at each stage and your work will be supervised throughout by qualified and experienced experts.

The nuts and bolts of it... We begin at 10:00 on day one and finish at 16:00 on day three. Some of the most powerful learning is likely to take place towards the end as we pull the golden threads together, give and receive feedback and get coaching on our plans to implement our learning. Please plan your arrival and departure accordingly. Preparation and follow up: After the first round of coaching practice, you will be expected to “bring a real issue” to the subsequent sessions within the 3 day programme. “Real issues” in this context are work-based challenges that you are not dealing with as well as you would like, if at all. We suggest you bring three to four such issues to the course. The dress code for the course itself is casual. The hours can be quite long (although they’ll fly by!) so be comfortable. We’ll encourage you at various stages to get some air. Bring walking shoes and outdoor wear suited to the season. After the course we will stay in touch. We have designed an “e-journal” process to enable us to stay abreast of your progress, keep up the challenge and support and help you integrate your development into your work. We look forward to setting out on this journey with you.

The nuts and bolts of it…

LEADING SELF MOBILISATION

Saying we can design anything isn’t really helpful, so here are some typical examples of the sorts of things we get asked to do, and, subsequently, have done: A Managing Director – new in the job – needed to get his existing board members working together and pulling in the same direction. Beyond the board room he realised a further 30 senior managers needed to be working more closely as a powerful integrated team. A public sector body wanted to make a culture shift in the way they communicated with the public. That involved changing the values some of their senior managers had around communication. A large corporate wanted to develop a programme for their young emerging talent. Something to inspire and cement their commitment to a learning culture that spots, develops and promotes their leadership pipeline. A FTSE 250 business across its management levels to cope with and lead that growth.

MASTERY

However well-formed your brief – from the back of an envelope to a 10 page document – our 5 step design process ensures it will be met. Step 1 - Initial enquiry. You’ll meet with a Leadership Development Consultant or member of our Associate team and our engagement starts. We will want to know a lot about you and your curiosity and a genuine interest in what makes you tick. Step 2 - Objective setting. We’ll ensure we all agree on exactly what it is you want to achieve from any investment you make, and how we will measure it – the objectives and outcomes. We will develop a costed concept which we will present to you. Step 3 - Programme design. We develop the concept solution into a detailed programme in close collaboration with you. Step 4 - Programme delivery. Our experienced Course Directors and Facilitators deliver the agreed programme. Step 5 - Review and evaluation. Our Leadership Development consultant reviews the programme with you to evaluate the outcomes and explore any future support.

So if you’ve been wondering how on earth you’re going to deal with that leadership challenge, talk to us. We’d love to sink our teeth into it and we’re sure we can design the right solution.
