Dental Study Tour to Indonesia Java, Bali, Komodo 9 – 21 September 2016 With UK flight package: 8 – 22 September 2016

Komodo National Park Mountains

Step off the tourist trail and experience lesser-travelled Indonesia. Visit the cultural riches of Java, peer into a vast volcanic caldera at daybreak, drift among beautiful remote islands, snorkel in turquoise waters brimming with fish and coral, relax on a pink beach and come face to face with the Komodo Dragon. On the way there are wide ranging CPD professional visits and talks, giving you insight into dental practice in different parts of Indonesia. Fly into Yogyakarta and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day settling in at your leisure before a welcome dinner with the group. Java is the heart of Indonesia – the modern hub and also the cultural heartland. Central Java is where the Javan cultural identity is at its strongest, and Yogyakarta, known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage, is its soul. Established in 1755, it is crammed with magnificent architecture, palaces and temples. On your first full day take a rickshaw to the Royal Palace, where you will visit a puppet maker, the water palace and an underground mosque. Visit the Yogyakarta Dental Hospital for a tour and to meet local dental practitioners, while partners visit the local bazaar, before driving to the spectacular temples of Prambanan. These are the most outstanding example of Hindu architecture in Indonesia and the graceful temples are a beautiful sight against the sky.

Rise early the next morning to drive to Borobodur, 1,200 years old and one of the most magnificent sites in Southeast Asia. Its imposing stone structures loom out of vivid green rice paddies and palms. Spend time here before driving to Candirejo, a fascinating village retaining a traditional way of life, set amongst beautiful rice paddies and rainforest. Explore this authentic Javanese village by bicycle or horse and cart and see traditional artisans at work. In the afternoon visit a batik workshop to see how the highly prized Javanese batik is produced. In the evening witness an unusual local tradition in South Square before dinner. Take the train past lush volcano-strewn scenery to Surabaya and check into your hotel. Visit the dental faculty at the prestigious Universitas Airlangga for a lecture on treatment planning

Prambanan Temple

Drive to the airport to fly to Denpasar and transfer to Sidemen village in the lush heartland of Bali. Check into your relaxed resort near the village and spend the rest of the day enjoying the pool and beautiful surroundings at your leisure.

in endodontics before visiting a museum with dental exhibits. Alternatively you may spend the afternoon at leisure, as will partners, or take an optional antiques tour. At first glance Surabaya is a vast, modern metropolis, but there are many fascinating corners of the old city that are richly rewarding if you know where to look. Surabaya is an historic trading port with old quarters, markets and kampungs, which you will discover the following day in the company of a local who knows the city’s old heart inside out. Explore the vibrant Arab quarter, where labyrinthine warrens lead to an historic mosque, the crumbling Dutch quarter with wonderful 19th century buildings, and sprawling, atmospheric Chinatown. You will also visit a local dental clinic in the old town and look at traditional medicine. Continue through a traditional kampung to the old wharves with their teak schooners and drive to Mount Bromo.

Sidemen village is surrounded by rice paddies and mountains and the resort is full of flowers and greenery. Spend the next day exploring the village, visiting the local weaver and the community centre, with time at leisure to explore at your own pace, join cookery classes or take a massage. There will be a CPD talk in the afternoon on dentistry in the 18th and 19th centuries as seen through cartoons. The following morning drive to Ubud for the day. Ubud’s reputation as a cultural and artistic hub set amongst verdant rice fields has made it an increasingly popular destination. While partners enjoy Ubud at their leisure there is a professional visit to the Dental Tourism Centre, a destination for foreigners coming to Bali for

Rise very early the next day to drive up to the crater of Mount Bromo for sunrise. The sight that greets you as you crest the caldera is a lunar-like landscape of epic proportions and a surreal, otherworldly beauty. Smoking volcanoes sit in a sea of mist within a vast crater, making this one of the most breathtaking sights in the whole of Indonesia. Drive up and over the edge of the major caldera, then drive across the sea of sand towards smoking Mt Bromo and get out to walk up to the lip of the crater itself to peer into the depths of the volcano. dental work, and a lecture on endodontics in the 21st century. Afterwards explore Ubud, including the Monkey Forest and the Agung Rai Museum of Art. The following day drive into the spectacular interior of Bali, an area of waterfalls, mountain lakes and volcanoes, and take a nature walk. In the evening hear Tony Druttman give a fascinating talk on his own family’s long line of dentists, a dramatic story spanning the Russian Revolution and World War II. Next morning fly to Flores, one of a series of sharp peaked green islands offering beautiful views. Visit the village of Mero to witness a folkloric dance, the caci, a dramatically staged whip dance. Check into your beachfront hotel. Rise very early the next morning to cruise through beautiful peaked islands and turquoise sea on a traditional boat to Komodo Island. Disembark and take a guided tour of the National Park to see the Komodo Dragons, walking up to Sulphurea and Frigate Hills for superb views. Sail to nearby Pink Beach for some spectacular snorkelling in turquoise water brimming with brightly coloured fish and coral. Afterwards sail onto Kalong Island in time to see thousands of bats flying out of their cave before returning to the hotel at the end of the day. Next day transfer to the airport to fly back to Bali. Spend a final night in Sanur at the lovely beachfront Puri Santrian Hotel. The caci dance, Flores (top); A Komodo Dragon; Beautiful Pink Beach (above)
