We forget as dental professionals our daily care for our patients puts an enormous physical strain on our bodies. Before using PeriOptix loupes with headlight, I found myself experiencing lower back and shoulder pain. I began doing some research on the internet and discovered a correlation between musculoskeletal discomfort and poor visualization in the dental profession. I discovered the primary reasons that magnification is the standard of care for most dental hygienists include: • Enhanced vision for improved patient care. Reviewing and evaluating details of teeth and soft tissue requires visual acuity, which improved through magnification. • No more “hygiene hunch.” Surgical quality loupes allow for improved ergonomic posture, which may extend you comfort — and your career. In January 2008, the Journal of Dental Education1 published a study of dental hygiene students, separated into two groups performing hand scaling, both with and without loupes. The students were videotaped to observe their posture. The concluding opinions were: “We strongly recommend the use of loupes for dental hygiene students, to begin as early in their entrance year as possible.” “The use of magnification loupes significantly improved posture for dental hygiene students in our study; greater improvements were

found for students starting to use loupes immediately on entering the program.” Another recent study published by Ronald N. Brown, DDS, of the UT Health Science Center’s Dental School2 examined the link between a dental hygienist’s posture and the use of magnification lenses to extrapolate similar conclusions across multiple applications and dental specialties. To evaluate these claims, Dr. Brown examined two previous studies on the posture of dental hygiene students. Using these studies, Brown extrapolated a quantifiable difference in professionals who used magnification verses those who did not. He determined that using magnification loupes improved posture for clinicians of any specialty and reduced the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. The research supports that the time to act is now. It is important not to wait until the damage is done before getting proper visualization. As dental professionals we must ask ourselves, “Isn’t it time that we decrease the physical strain that the dental profession places on our bodies before it’s too late?” The answer is clearly yes.

Combining the Advantages of Custom Loupes with the Convenience of Flip-Ups Through-the-lens loupes (TTLs) offer several advantages over flip-up style loupes. In general, TTLs are very lightweight and never need adjusting. In addition, because the optics of TTLs is set closer to the eye, the field of view also tends to be larger than flip-up style loupes. However, TTLs require that each customer’s eyes be measured individually. Because they are custom made, TTLs are very expensive and the frequent need for individual adjustment make them impractical to sell overseas. That is, until now! PeriOptix is introducing its Ready-Made through-the-lens loupe system to its international dealers. Ready-Made loupes are the first TTLs that combine the advantages of custom loupes with the convenience of flip-ups. Available in 2.7x magnification and 4 working distances, these TTL loupes are made with a standard Interpupillary distance (IPD) that are designed to fit most users.

Pupillary Distance (PD) is the measurement, in millimeters, between the centers of the pupils in each eye. This measurement can be done quickly and painlessly by your local PeriOptix representative or by any optometrist. Note: If done by an optometrist make sure the measurement is taken at infinity ( ).

Working Distance is the measurement at which the doctor is comfortable working. This distance should be calculated while the doctor is in an upright, and comfortable position that keeps the clinician’s ergonomics in check.
