Dear Friends, There was a recent article in Time magazine’s online edition, entitled “Sorry, But Media Coverage of St. Francis is Papal Bull.” What a great lead-in for a story! It goes on to show how the popular press either exaggerates or actually distorts much of what Pope Francis says. But, it tends to do this with religion topics in general. The recent reporting of the Synod on the Family, is a case in point. In much of the coverage the popular media gave to the Synod, it interpreted it through the political lens of “liberal” and “conservative.” In doing so, it continues to keep us underdeveloped. Its very superficiality in matters of faith and life means that it is of very little help when it comes to our growth with God and with one another. That’s why our series on the Mass this month, Critical Mass, is so critical for us all. We need to update our appreciation of what happens at Mass so we can be nourished by our faith, not simply titillated by it. This is especially true at the second major part of the Liturgy, The Word Celebration. Last week, we compared the Mass to a meal. Like a meal, it begins with welcoming and settling down to enjoy each other’s company. The special quality of the Mass is that Christ welcomes all because he sees us all as the children of his Father. He desires to transform us with that vision. The Liturgy of the Word is like the shared conversation that goes on before and during a meal. It’s Christ’s chance to share the particulars of his vision, to let him be our guide in learning how to live it in our daily lives. This is symbolically played out for us with the carrying of the Book of the Gospels in the opening procession. If that procession is a sign of our journey of faith, the Book being carried in it symbolizes Christ’s presence with us as we journey. It’s then placed on the Altar, a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice, letting us know that it’s his word, from his life, given to us and for us.

Notice, though, that as part of this symbol the same Book isn’t carried out at the end of Mass. Why not? It’s because we are meant to be the Living Book of the Christ’s Word! We are meant to leave carrying that Book out in our hearts and minds, giving our lives, for the world. So, if we are to be that Living Book, paying attention to what the Lord says to us is critical. That’s why we sit and listen and why we respond Thanks Be to God after the readings. Singing the Responsorial Psalm together helps us recognize that what we’ve heard is God speaking with us and praising him in song can move us to continue to be attentive. The reading of the Gospel is accompanied by a procession with candles and our standing to emphasize its special significance. The words at the beginning and the end of the reading also highlight that Christ himself is sharing his wisdom. The gestures we use also draw our attention to this. We bless our foreheads, our lips, and our hearts, asking him to open us to hear him well and praise him sincerely. The homily after the Gospel is meant to be a reflection on what we’ve heard in the three readings. It’s here that the timelessness of God’s Word, his sharing himself with us, should be revealed. If it’s done well, the homily will bring that Word to us here and now. It must be applicable to today. Finally, as in any good conversation, God not only speaks with us, but we, too, continue to speak with him. In the Creed, we share with him our reason for confidence in him. In the Intercessions, we act on that confidence, sharing both our daily concerns and the challenges we experience trying to live by his vision. Without his inspiration, that vision will be untried. With it, we can’t help but develop our humanity. Love,

Fr. Joe

MEDITATION Trust In God When we trust God with our whole heart, we don’t fill our prayers with “Give me this” or “Take this frOm me.” We don’t even think of ourselves when we pray. At every moment we trust our Father in heaven, whose love infinitely surpasses the love of all earthly fathers and who gives us more than we ourselves could ask for or even imagine. Isaac of Nineveh (6th century)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Dedication of the Lateran Basilica “For we are God’s fellow workers…” – 1 CORINTHIANS 3:9

We are called to help God build His kingdom on earth. We are His eyes, ears, hands and voice on Earth. By giving of our “first fruits” of our time, talent and treasure we help fulfill God’s call. Are you doing all you can to help? Do you spend time in prayer every day? Do you participate in one of the many parish ministries? Do you give generously in the offertory collection each week?

BACK TO OUR ROOTS Please join us Thursday, November 13th in the Faith Center. Come discuss Sunday’s Gospel!! Pope’s Monthly Intention: ...that all who suffer loneliness may experience the closeness of God and the support of others. POSSIBLE CHANGE IN SUMMER WEEKDAY MASS TIMES During July and August, Fr. Colin and I have found that because of our vacation schedules it is difficult to juggle doing two masses and the many funerals we have as well as our other duties. We have shared this concern with the people who go to the 7:30 and 8:45 masses and sought their recommendations on how we could reduce the number of masses during those two months from two to one. They will be advising us as to their recommendations over the next week. Please feel free to do the same. Fr. Joe

Do this ... Critical Mass: The Catholic Mass and Action in the World a teaching series

Saturdays 5:15 pm Sundays 7:30, 9:30, 11:30 am, and 6:00 pm

On the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with those he felt closest to, and his apostles ate and drank and left with a mission: to “do this” in his memory. Join us at Saint Anne’s as we continue our four-week teaching homily series now through Nov. 22/23. Together we’ll reflect on the key symbols of the Mass and explore how, like our most special family meals, the meal that is the Eucharist calls us to openness and to dialogue, to sacrifice and to community.

Service… Impelled by the Spirit of Jesus, St. Anne’s strives to reach out to others. In works on behalf of justice, charity, and human development, we seek to imitate Jesus in bringing glad tidings to the poor, liberty to the oppressed and captives, and healing to the blind and the sick. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Representatives: Fr. Joe, Fr. Colin, or Lenora Mosca

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving… You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org There are several ways to access the system: 1.

Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system. OR

2.

From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says “envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
